I just got EA play because I was bored so I fired up to check out NFS again which I haven't played since launch, I pootled about a bit and holy ball juice does it look swell. It's a shame the game is absolute bollocks apart from the presentation as far as i remember but god dayum. I put a bit of the nvidia sharpen stuff in the control panel on it because the TAA makes the game very soft, do ya reckon I went overboard with it? I think it looks sweet bruv. Only thing missing it Kelly Brooks baps from Underground 2

Going to play Heat next, should look even better right?!

This game looked amazing, and still does.
I would say it even looks better than the latest games, but the game takes place at night, with rain, puddles and all so that really helps setting up the atmosphere and playing with the lighting to get a good result, so the comparison wouldn't be really fair, but the game still looks crazy anyway.

I didn't think the game was bad, the gameplay and customization were great, the biggest problems in my opinion were:
- the difficulty being wayyy too easy in single player, even the supposed "high difficulty" dlc challenges are super easy, you can sometimes stop and wait 30 seconds before the other cars catch up with you.
- The online feeling super dead because of a lack of chat, and it's like that for all NFS games (and many other games actually... sadly), you can free roam online, meet other players, but you can't interact with them because there's no chat, so it kinda kills the point of that. I would have loved to have a text chat at least on PC, so it could feel like a racing mini mmo.

So I finally got around to trying some NFS Heat.

1. The game is definitely much better, car handling is much more natural and the career pacing is much improved

2. Holy shit did they nerf the visuals, I mean it still looks good but even at night it looks nowhere near as impressive to my eye. Day time looks even worse, though of course there's no day time in NFS 2015 to compare to. Bummer...

NFS Heat looks vomit inducing at day, nights are okay I guess, but they overdid it with all the neon lights :/

They used many tricks. It has a lot of make-up to look good but that doesn't change the fact that yes, it does look quite good. On all platforms.
They were smart back then. The visuals of Payback and Heat collapse like overcooked noodles at daytime especially.
Jeez, can't wait for Criterion's NFS 2021.

I mean, can someone explain to me what's the big hype with raytracing when those reflections in a game 6 years ago look incredible?

Reflections are nice to have but not that important. The big one is raytraced global illumination. The more recent NFS games would look ten times better with it.

I completly forgot about this game. From the day they announced it would require an online connection to play offline, i completly cancelled it from the existence. Those games with those anticonsumer DRM can go directly in the trash bin for me. But yeah, looks decent for being a 2015 game, for sure better than a lot of newer games.

I tried to play 2015 a couple weeks ago. I just can't get around the handling model. I hate how it handles. That was my main gripe during the beta/demo when the game first released as well.

Frostbite if I remember right.

Thats WHY I asking a BF3 remaster using the lastest Frostbite engine.

So 2015 still the best looking?
Worth playing for at least visuals?
Yea if you're a graphics whore like me it's worth cranking the res up and going for a cruise around just to gawk at the lighting. it is pretty stunning at times

Yea it's terrible, both drift and grip settings or anywhere in between. They fucked it up completely.

Dude I just got 3080. I am all about that graphics whoring now :P

The online requirement was the only thing that stopped me from buying this.

Not spending money on something that will be unplayable in a few years.

It's been possible to have nice reflection effects for a long time, and it's indeed quite annoying that everyone seem to be acting like reflections never existed before ray tracing. But they do require more work and different tricks from the dev to get a good result, while ray tracing allows an almost automatic, immediat result.

It will be more convenient for devs, for sure, however people need to be aware that, moving to a standard where ray tracing might be more comon will mean a downgrade, or at least a stagnation of video game graphics for a long time, because a lot of the power will be used for these reflections that used to be a lot less demanding in the past.

It has pros and cons.

NFS Heat looks like shit because they don't know how to do reflections & they just slapped some SSR on it and called it a day. A joke of a studio really. Performance was also overall quite poor I would say, especially compared to how Frostbite titles run usually. It was just really bad, only tried the trial period you get with Origin but had to put it down. I'd rather keep playing for Horizon 4 for the 1000th hour instead.

Personally I still had the most fun with Rivals out of newer NFS, I really liked that setting and the audio track was dope.

It was the same studio as NFS 2015 no?

I mean in general to how they handled the franchise, just because they nail the graphics in one game more than another isn't the end of it. But for NFS studios people get shuffled around so much, it's hard to really say it's the same studio anyway.

One of the few games I bought on the basis of its graphics. Any by Christ did I learn my lesson. Utter turd of a game and Mega CD era acting.

You can get this game for a price of a cup of coffee. Stop being so dramatic and expierience it. It's a great game.

it's going to be in GamePass soon, so I'll definitely give this a shot.

sucks that gamepass pc will get EA Play later tho, I wanna play this at 60fps not at 30 on console

NFS 2015 is the best NFS in this gen and probably it's never going to be better. Even that Hot Pursuit remaster look bad, however I loved that game back in the day.

I didn't believe the initial trailers and was amazed when the final game looked just like that. Now I started replaying it and it amazed me again, the graphics are unbelievable even today. And it's only the ps4 version. It's arguably the most realistic looking racer (and game) ever, next to DriveClub and Forza Horizon 4.

I've actually convinced people that those screenshots are leaked from the next gen NFS before, they look that good!

I absolutely loved this game when it released. Pretty sure I got the platinum trophy for it, one of very few.

Need to revisit it on PC one day. The games that came after didn't hold my attention as much as this one.

Been playing NFS Unbound.

This is still the best looking NFS game 8 years later
I'm not surprised

Havent played Unbound or Heat (despite owning it), but from screens/videos, its clear that 2015 looks better

It had baked lighting, but they ditched it in the sequels in order to have dynamic TOD. Dumb decision.

Unless you are doing RTGI, dynamic lighting will look way worse than baked lighting.

Your Heat screenshots in this topic looks horrible. Comparing night time to NFS 2015, it looks a generation apart.

Same reason why even to this day, there's no AC game with lighting as good as AC Unity from 2014

RTGI/path tracing is the easy way out for developers, but its such a lazy way of correcting things.

PS: And the downgrade goes harder than just graphics, btw

its asinine how so few people appreciate the visuals of unity. Ask most people and they say its worse looking than syndicate. Syndicate/valhalla/odyssey in actuality looks ps3 quality when compared to unity. Its that bad.

Yup, it still looks better than newer NFS titles in every way almost. The shaders and lighting is just soo good.

Denzel Washington Movie GIF

I have it installed on my PC just for the virtual tourism now and then

It looks bonkers to this day. And the downgrade also happened in terms of animations, cloth physics, hair rendering, and many more

Was the dynamic TOD worth it? Combine baked lighting with dynamic like RDR 2 did, then

Or make it like Spider-Man where you can choose what TOD you want, or its tied to missions

That video ha, reminds me of all the Far Cry 2 vs 3 and GTA 4 vs 5 ones.

A NFS Underground 1 remake (yea 1 i'm sick of open world) woulda been perfect with NFS 2015 graphics

How is unbound? I am not against more lively, teen style at all.
The only NFS I've tried in last decade was heat and it didn't grab me at all
