Neill Blomkamp officially working on new Alien film

The Aliens universe is one of my all time favourites so I will happily embrace a new Blomkamp Alien film and a Ridley Scott Prometheus 2 (no Lindelof though).

District 9 was fantastic, Resurrection was a poor bow out for Sigourney and Biehn in anything im weak for.

Do it. They just need to stay strong on a good scriptwriter and avoid the go-to hacks that typically blow their way to these roles.

He's been posting concept art for awhile.

As long as he doesn't try to force-feed any sort of overarching political ideologies in the screenplay then this could turn out ok. The action elements of District 9 still hold up, and well, the creature design is assured to be top-notch.

Fuck yeah!
I'd love it if they somehow brought Hicks back into the fold.
There's a really dumb retcon in Aliens Colonial Marines where it shows he actually survives. Hopefully Blomkamp will actually give it some more thought than "some soldier accidentally fell into your cryotube".

This franchise is the veritable flogged dead horse.

Like the sucker that I am though, unless it looks dreadful or dull as fuck like Elysium did, I'll watch it.

Only if it retcons the post-Aliens movies and doesn't feature any of the stupid leaked concept art like the Alien suit. I don't have much faith after Elysium.

Blomkamp is so in demand that he neogtiated his deal with Fox through Instagram.

I can't wait to see him develop the script entirely through SnapChat.

..., also, he closed this deal before Chappie opened so you know that film is going to turn out really well and not show that District 9 was a fluke.

Well he's certainly a visionary as far as doing SF action porn. Not necessarily new ideas, but filmed in such a way and using good effects to give a lot of impact to stuff like exoskeletons, explosive ammunition, beam weapons and such. The action in D9 and Elysium is unmatched in that sense.

His biggest weakness is scriptwriting.

His second is filming fight sequences, if Elysium is all we can go by. I don't remember anything in D9 as incoherent as some of the final action scenes in Elysium.

I hope they don't bring Ripley back, for one thing it would probably have to be the dumb clone version anyway unless they retcon.

So ehm... why are you people so excited? Isn't he the director of district 9 and elysium?! Aren't those considered bad movies in here?

I'm kind of disappointed because I like him doing original IP's, plus unlike most people I like his signature style (especially the south african theme he always runs with as it's the only time you really see it).

In terms of the alien franchise, well it has been nothing but shit for 20 years so if it turns out bad I'm not too worried.

I'll definitely be there day one whatever happens.

Not sure how I feel about this. I'm not convinced that Blomkamp has what it takes to deliver a satisfying Alien movie outside of the art direction and effects, but he is clearly passionate about the project. Looking forward to Chappie, but with reservations, after Elysium.

I would argue that Elysium was worse than Prometheus, but that's a case of whoever wins, we lose.

I feel that Prometheus aimed a lot higher, and when it fell short the disappointment was stronger because the gap between what it was and what it wanted to be was just so huge. Elysium in comparison was way less ambitious, and while it also fell short, there were lower expectations and so it merely felt like a ho-hum film rather than a massive failure.

Agreed. I don't think "isn't afraid to push boundaries" applies to it but I agree with you.
