Neill Blomkamp officially working on new Alien film

So ehm... why are you people so excited? Isn't he the director of district 9 and elysium?! Aren't those considered bad movies in here?

LOL. D9 is one of the best sci-fi movies in the last 20 years.

Elysium is kinda trash in comparison, but Blomkamp is amazinzg at making sci-fi feel real and grounded. Put this man into the Alien universe and who knows what he will be able to produce. I mean, I still get goosbumps over his Halo short movie, it was exactly what a Halo movie should have been, grounded and gritty following a group of marines as they struggle to survive constantly getting fucked up. He knows sci-fi best.

blomkamp bring the franchise back

Hm. I'm in for this I guess. Alien and Aliens are 2 of my favorite movies of all time. I don't hate Alien 3 and Resurrection as much as some people, but they're definitely not good and soured the series. I would be fine with this movie pretending they don't exist.

I didn't like Prometheus either. It looked stunning and had a handful of great scenes, but the script was awful.

As far as Blomkamp goes, I loved District 9 and didn't like Elysium. I was actually kinda hoping he might do District 10 (or whatever a sequel would be called).

Cautiously optimistic I suppose, especially if Sigourney is on board.

First order of business: Everything from the end of Aliens on was just a terrible hypersleep dream.

I would argue that Elysium was worse than Prometheus, but that's a case of whoever wins, we lose.

I haven't seen elysium but I refuse to believe it was worse than Prometheus which makes and then immediately drops plot points and...I don't even know. Tryhard movie if I ever saw one.

Elysium is a dull fucking bore. Prometheus is many things, but at least it's somewhat entertaining.

Why not. I like Blomkamp and though I liked District 9 more than Elysium, I like him as a director and he's clearly passionate about Alien so I'm in. Can't get much worse for the franchise so I'm all for it. Still want to see him do a Halo movie at some point though. Now that he would nail easy.

Is Chappie get bad early word of mouth?
Maybe the opposite if he closed a deal like this before it's even out.

There's no question that the production design and effects for this Alien film (if it does get made, not really certain until Fox confirms it!) will be really, really cool. I think the main concern would be how simplistic the sociopolitical commentary in the story would be. Blomkamp's weakness thus far is that he seems very one-note in that aspect. His films all showcase classism and corporate/elite exploitation of the poor, but often the issues are explored in a very naive black and white way which just feels childish. I can totally see him applying this same narrative technique to the Alien universe, and while it would fit, it would also be... boring.

Agreed. I don't think "isn't afraid to push boundaries" applies to it but I agree with you.

Well i don't know what pushes the boundaries of cinema for you but his style is what I've never seen before. So for me that pushes the boundaries in cinema.

Sure whatever. Franchise can't go much lower after prometheus. Blomkap is better than (recent) Scott. Wish it would be more of a horror reboot with the jockeys not being human and basically a doomsday cult worshipping the xenon but whatever. This franchise had been a used so long I don't know how they could fix it any way. See how it goes. Though focusing on Ripley yet again is stupid and as much as I like hicks he's dead move on. No need for heros when Ripley was just a survivor in the first one. Oh well aliens is more popular so the films will follow it. Should get some decent action at least

Yes we must really learn to see the good in Weylan-Yutani.......

Honestly I would be far more interested in an Alien film without W-Y at all. The entire corrupt corporation running a dodgy mission/colony/whatever has been done to death. Fincher had the right idea with Alien3, but it was the execution and the production which fell short.

A time line where Alien 3 and Resurrection never happen would automatically make this a good aliens movie in my books, which may very well be the case if those concept art pieces are anything to go by.

Yup. The rich executives of Mega Space Corporations are breeding the aliens to do menial labour work such as fanning them with giant palm leaves on hot days and fetching them Space Martinis.

But one plucky kid who lives in a tin shack in a space favela wins a..., ticket to take a tour of Willy Wonka's factory and finds that it's filled not with Uumpa Loompas but Aliens..., who..., have sneaked across..., the space border to...,

*walks off*

Nice he'll bring a fresh look to the franchise loved his concept art he made but let's make sure he doesn't write this and he gets a good scriptwriter.

can't wait to see people calling Prometheus a great movie after this one comes out, love trainwrecks :b zero confidence in his direction....

He has an awesome visual style and its a reflection of how talented he is. I just don't see why anyone would be afraid to do it. Blowing apart bodies has been done, a lot. The way he does it is awesome.
