Neill Blomkamp officially working on new Alien film

Neiil's a great experimental director; his rugged documentary style was refreshing for sci-fi. However, for me, Elysium was one of the worst written, most ill-conceived, and poorly executed film of that year.

Another example where the studio announces the director before any talent in the writing department.

I'm ready.

Looks like the movie could be Alien: Resurrection levels of dumb.

If you treat Elysium like what it is, a dumb 80s style action flick like The Running Man or something, with Sharlto Copley and Jodie Foster hamming it up, it's quite fun. If you treat it like some kind of political screed aiming to be thoughtful, you'll probably dislike it a lot more.

Blomkamp was just reflecting his view on the world as someone from Africa who moved to Canada. Using it as a backdrop for a sci-fi flick. He understands that first/third world divide a bit better than most.

But because healthcare and immigration were hotbed political issues in the US at the time, people thought they were getting a left-wing preachy movie about America. I don't even think Blomkamp is political in that sense. The portrayal of Nigerians in District 9 was not the work of a liberal.

Nailed it. The film had nothing to do with American politics.

Kinda made me think of Battle Ange Alita tbh

I don't have a lot of hope for this. Elysium was balls, the concept art looked stupid (please no Ripley alien armor...) and do we really need a fifth alien movie? Like what else is there to do? The chances of this being as horrifying and beautiful as Alien are about nil, and I also doubt it will as fun of an action movie as Aliens.

The concept art didn't instill me with a ton of confidence but if nothing else it will be fun to see Sigourney back.

Yeah and how that movie will likely not be made in my lifetime. Cameron should just give it to Blomkamp.
Seeing as how Sigourney is buddy buddy with Cameron and will be working together soon, maybe she can arrange a meet!

I just wish we would get a horror film instead of an action one. But it ain't happening any time soon, so... First Alien still best Alien. Probably will remain best Alien until the end of times.

Any particular edit you'd recommend? I've been wanting to watch Prometheus but similarly been told to do a fan edit that removed/minimized the plot problems.

How did they handle the scientists being morons? That'd take some really clever splicing.

I like the Weyland Investors one the most. It cut down a lot of stupid little scenes that did not need to be in there and re-instated the deleted scenes. As far as the dumb ass scientists the fan editor cut out as much as he could get away with but it's still there. Like the whole Alien Cobra scene, the bit with the Geologist dude smoking pot and the other guy unreasonably wanting to pet the Alien Cobra is cut down a bit.

There's another interesting fan edit that incorporates the TED Talks viral video in the opening credits. The problem with that fan edit was that it was over long.

A little off topic, but I briefly considered making a thread on this question:

Has any series (main series) had the same level of directing talent attached to it as the ALIEN series has?

I mean, this series has had:

-Ridley Scott (Oscar nominated 3 times for Best Director)
-James Cameron (Oscar nominated 2 times for Best Director; won once)
-David Fincher (Oscar nominated 2 times for Best Director)
-Jean Pierre Jeunet (Oscar nominated 1 time for Best Writing/Screenplay, Nominated and Won for Best Picture at the European Film Awards)

It's impressive to think about the talent the main ALIEN series has had.
Not sure if this will be more 'Alien 5' or more 'AvP' as far as relevance to the series, but even though Elysium was a dud, I still think Blomkamp could end up having a pretty successful career. Will he reach the respected heights of the four filmmakers I listed above though? Time will tell. :)

So are they pulling a Superman Returns here and doing a sequel to 2 that ignores 3 and 4? If Hicks is actually in it the answer is obviously "yes" but that could have just been wishful thinking on Blomkamp's part.

Also, the article I saw said this will come out after Prometheus 2... which sounds... weird.

I'm only interested in this if Signourey is involved. Is it confirmed she'll be coming back or is it just hopeful speculation?

So is everything from Alien 3 onward being retconned? If so, good.

Let's pray, Alien 3 is trash (hate that they
killed of Newt in the beginning after spending most of the 2nd movie trying to save her
). The less said about Ressurection the better, though Prometheous was ok

I figured when he was posting that stuff, that it was for the sole purpose of stirring up some internet noise and possibly getting the project moving. Sort of like Deadpool.

Looks like that has happened. Fantastic!
Ignore 3 and 4. Sequel to 2.

Alienses: Hick's Revenge.
Don't call it that.

I said this in another forum I frequent but would love to see an adaption of aliens: female war. Loved this book as a teenager and fits in alot with blomkamps film styles (plenty of gritty urban scenes iirc with cities overrun by alien hives) as well as giving him chances to go beyond this by going to the alien home world.

I'm gonna be bummed out if they retcon Alien 3. I don't care about Resurrection, but A3 Assembly Cut was fucking great. I really, really don't want this to be Aliens 2. Which thankfully, the producers for the franchise were smart enough to avoid after the second movie.

I respect your opinion and its one thats shared by many on GAF. I keep hearing it but I just dont get it.

Its 'better' but it still doesnt fix many base problems with its conceit. Its not a terribad movie but it's not an enjoyable one. Even grim films should have an element of...I dont know. Not Alien3

They need to retcon Aliens. Turning the alien from an ostensibly solitary, predatory hunter (like a tiger) into a space bug cheapened the entire thing.

They should retcon Alien, really. There's no way a single person like Eleanor Ripley would've survived that encounter. Totally unrealistic!

yeah...
unless Scott is already deep in pre-production & planning on pushing Pro2 for like 2016 or something.
The guy seems to work pretty quickly.

Even with his work ethic, I don't think he can have Prometheus 2 ready for next March when he already has The Martian coming in November. The only way they make that date is if someone else directs.

Can we at least all count on one thing? This movie will have Sharlto Copley in a major role. I think it will be a weird ass movie and be like Alien Resurrection, along with a weird way to bring back Hicks.

Cool, finally an interesting director to tackle the franchise. Don't let Ridley Scott anywhere near it though, that man is a hack.

*shudders*

Having watched Resurrection recently to check 'just how bad' I found new ways to find it really, really fucking bad. The hybrid is okay though, technically. I can see why HR Giger liked it, but that doesn't excuse the movie.

Resurrection is one of the worst films of all time which is made even doubly embarassing because of how big a dump it took on the franchise.

Seriously. Joss Whedon? That's who Fox got to write a script? Worst choice ever for sure. And the director while "Artistic" was also a poor choice.

But yeah, the script and the acting were at embarrassing levels of terrible.
