Neill Blomkamp officially working on new Alien film

Has there ever been a major motion picture part of a series that retconned other movies in the series in Hollywood to the point where they were no longer considered canon?

I know Highlander 2 went through various retcons. Retcons of itself that is lol

The 7th movie in the Halloween series picks up directly from Halloween 2, rendering 3-6 non-canon, or alternate reality, or something. I don't think anyone really cared about those movies by that point though (including the people making them).

edit: beaten

Why do people want these old ass actors for horror or action films?

Because the alternative is this:

I'm down. They've already murdered the franchise several times over, there's really nowhere to go but up. If it's visually arresting and introduces some new ideas, I'll be happy.

I hope this turns out well. A good alien movie thats a finale to the Ripley story is one of my biggest movie wants.

Also I didn't hate Prometheus. It was a bit dumb but that normally happens when you go meddling with established fiction. At some point I have watched enough long running sci fi stuff to know nothing is ever set in stone and the writer will always bend things to tell their dumb story.

Actually there's a script, it's finished and there's a date.
Just a matter of time.

There's no date there (the March 2016 date turned out to be for another movie). And Deadline reported today that there was "no script" in place: http://deadline.com/2015/02/alien-neil-blomkamp-directing-fox-movie-1201376439/

I know they hired a new writer sometime last year, but it doesn't sound like there's anything they're ready to move forward on.

You know what, I'm okay with Blomkamp doing a new Alien film. It might not have a great script, or tread new ground, but it will be pretty.

Thanks god it isn't going to JJ Abrams, or Michael Bay. Hell, I'd take Uwe Boll over those two.

Fuck the haters, I loved Prometheus.

Prometheus is awesome. As per usual people generally flock toward the same complaints every time a discussion arises such as the dumbass scientist dudes getting lost in the tunnels, but I thought the story and themes in general were fantastic.

Please keep Lindelost away from this!

He probably made the story more interesting than the original draft. But I know how much we love to hate the guy so carry on!

So are we officially not getting a Prometheus 2? That kinda bums me out.

Not sure why they cannot co-exist. Prometheus is more about the origin of the species and how they're established as man's punishment, a symbol of sin in a way, for meddling in things above them and beyond their understanding, whereas the Alien line of films is about the chaos that is brought by the actions of what was unearthed in Prometheus. Prometheus 2 can further the story established in the first one while not being directly related to Alien and its sequels.

But it's Ridley and he likes to jump ship on projects about as much as del Toro, so who knows. Fox may think that this is enough. He did talk about the sequel in a recent interview though just back in December:

During the interview, Scott confirms the film will focus on Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and the currently-decapitated android David (Michael Fassbender) as they search for the Engineer's homeworld. He also touches on David's manipulative personality and potentially malicious motives by adding:

“Once that head goes back on, [David] is really dangerous, but he’s also very seductive. So maybe he’ll persuade [Shaw] to help him put the head back." Watch the full interview on MTV!

Whether this comes to fruition though is anyone's guess.

edit: just found this article from Variety stating:

According to insiders, the new “Alien” takes place years after the “Prometheus” sequel. Scott is producing both films through his production company Scott Free.

First he did racial apartheid with aliens. Then social apartheid with humans.

Now he'll merge ripley with an alien to do human-alien hybrid apartheid against androids maybe?

A mid-budget (~$70-100 million) R-rated Alien would be perfect. Neill can make it look visually better than most movies with twice the budget.

Day 1.

No matter what, he can't fuck up the franchise worse than it already is, and it will at least be a very cool looking movie.

"

Oh, please no. Like, my only scenario where I would ever see Prometheus 2 was if the entire film had David as JUST the head, and he spent the time having a wacky-creepy adventure with Noomi Rapace across the planet. I don't want him to be bad again, I want him to be different. But they've got their own direction with it, so... hey, whatever.

Just please don't mess up the new Alien by making it seem like a Prometheus film. It's Alien.

Sharlto Copley will play the Xeno, which is a metaphore for an oppressed minority. Ripley will play the role of officer of the oppressors, but will gain insight that these xenos are just living creatures with every much right to existence as us. In the end, they overthrow the status quo and have magnificent xeno-human babies.

I don't need this in my life.

we're all just fookin xeens at heart man, ya

As long as this follows Aliens and ignores the other films, I'm down.

The last few Alien movies have been horrendous so there is no way this will damage anything. It's a free swing, after Prometheus it's clear that Ridley Scott can't be trusted. Just retcon all that shit.

I didn't realize Prometheus was so disliked. I though it was pretty great. I really liked Elysium as well.

Anyway, hope this new Alien turns out well.

I love District 9 and Elysium was okay, decent scifi action flick.

So I'm okay with this.

But I also like Aliens 3 more than Aliens 4. So my taste is outside of the GAF consensus.

But we're still getting Arnold playing a role he's 30 years too old for.

King Conan is in the same age range as Arnie. Not sure how is too old for the role, seems a perfect fit to me.

The two stories have their own direction but it's all under the same umbrella. I think it's pretty awesome to be getting multi-faceted installments like this.

I don't mind if Prometheus mentions things from Alien, like Weyland-Yutani or synthetics. I just think Alien has to be seen as the main attraction, the big daddy, and should come first if there's ever a conflict between the two.
