NeoGAF’s Official Game Soundtracks of the Year 2015: Results and Archive

Great list and one I pretty much concur with.

On a soundtrack related note, I know quite a few people here listen to the game specials on Classic FM whenever they're on. The Classic FM Hall of Fame has just opened for 2016 - please do vote in it. Obviously it's orchestrated music only - sorry Undertale and Hotline Miami - but Bloodborne could get in!

Personally I've voted for Shenmue, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Shadow of the Colossus. Do vote!

Undertale rightfully takes the top spot. I really can't wait to see what Toby Fox comes up with next. I know he is working on music for the Homestuck video game, Hiveswap. I'm more excited for his music than the actual game.

Undertale totally cleaned up, and for a good reason. But man EO2U didn't even rank. Hopefully we get EOV this year so Koshiro can get what he clearly deserves.

Undertale sweeps the table, excellent.

I didn't expect Bloodbourne to be so highly regarded in terms of music, but I will see for myself when I get a PS4 like in a couple of years maybe.

Thanks for all your hard work Schala and your little helpers!

Kind of surprised at 2 and 3. Not complaining though, they're both pretty good!

I completely forgot about Transformers Devastation when making my list. I don't know what this means, but I feel kind of bad because that soundtrack was bitchin'.

Hey, I voted for it, and I didn't even PLAY EO2U. I can't resist the allure of Koshiro.

Very solid top five, and glad to see the Falcom fans representing with both Trails games a bit down the list.

Bloodborne is effective with its restraint. Large stretches of the game will have barely any music at all, and most of it is rather generic. When things get real however, so does its music. It really helps boost the gravity of the boss encounters. It feels quite Shadow of the Colossus-esque in that regard.

Thanks for the effort. Good to see Bloodborne and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture in the top 15. I wonder if I was the only one who voted The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and The Order: 1886? The latter might not be that great of a game, but the soundtrack is fantastic. Those two and BB share a similar melancholic mood, which is one of the reasons for why I voted for them.

Looking at the write ups about FFXIV's OST really makes me want to get back into it. It's clearly a fantastic effort, I just don't like playing it.

Thanks for putting in the work Schala!

Damn, I need to play Yoshi's Woolly World. Have had it since launch, but I'm still chipping away at Tropical Freeze. Soon, though!

And very happy about Undertale. Amazing OST for an equally memorable gaming experience (2 out of the 3 playthroughs, anyway :))

Not really a surprise to see Undertale win, it certainly earned it. I can't wait to play it.

Also not a surprise to see no Etrian Odyssey game in the top 15, as much as I'd like to see otherwise. Hopefully EOV can pull it off whenever it comes out.

Time to listen to some music~

Surprised Splatoon didn't place higher. Then again it was barely edged out of third place.

Xenoblade Chronicles X edged out a fifth place spot so I have no reason to complain.

No Rodea but I wonder if more than a dozen people have finished that game of GAF.

I can't hear you,
I can't see you,
Woo Hoo hoo,

Do you know what movie this is from?
invasion of the body snatchers 1978. great movie.

Thanks for putting the vote together Dark Schala, each year I must kick myself to write something so I can only imagine what it's like to count votes, choosing quotes, updating the archive... and writing extensive posts like yours!

Deserving winner and top 10, even if some very good OSTs got a little bit ignored too (How Tales of the Borderlands isn't in the top 15 !!?!?!!!? }:( ). I appreciated reading a lot of interesting opinions and explanations too, quality posts all around. Thanks guys.

I'm still genuinely shocked CR17S19S8 got listed. I don't think anyone even remembered the name of that track lol where'd it come from?

Restraint is an oft forgotten virtue.

I like my music to be a major part of the game. THEMES FOR EVERYTHING.

It makes sense in the souls series though, where you're trying to have a thick horror atmosphere.

A nice top 3, those are some of my favourite Nintendo soundtracks (hohoho)

*ahem* another year and another fine batch of music.
Good to see the soundtrack thread back in the right hands, partly because now I know the pain of tallying but mostly because it seems to ensure a Schala tome (I almost forgot about this terminology!) and an archive.

Ori coming in at #10 is a travesty.
I knew I should've dropped the "already going to win" Undertale from my main three and bumped Ori up.

It's been a great year for video game music. Also nice to see Wooly World chart, that game had great music. All the list is missing is Transformers

Honestly, I loved EOU2's OST, but it automatically ranked lower on my list (like other games) for being mostly remixes.
Still loved it, and EOV might be in my top 3 next time.

Sinatar

Official GAF Bottom Feeder
2 new Frank Klepacki soundtracks in 2015 and I was the only person to vote for either of them.

Write an ugly run-on sentence, still get quoted.

Anywho wasnt expecting a landslide for anything but Undertale with a tapering drop off after that but was proven wrong.

Great work as always especially our host for the event: Schala.

It was stronger than last year i know that; its almost 2011-strength.

Really disagreed with that one, 2014 was really a level above. About the same for 2013, but I'd still put 2012 a bit above this year.
Reading every top 15 here, I'd actually say this was still the weakest year, even if this top really shows it wasn't a weak year per se.

I fixed the Stella Glow composer list, Thoraxes.

I wasn't a member when the 2010 soundtrack vote was held, but I do think that 2010 was probably the strongest year we had. Lots of variation, and a lot more soundtracks that made it very difficult to decide how to even bother ranking a top five. If I could hold that vote again, I don't know what I'd actually vote for.

Well, I tried to pick up where Nert left off. It is a lot of work, especially if you don't keep on top of it. It's why I was thankful a few folks offered to help out and I took them up on their offer. With more people voting, it's more work involved... and since I work at the hospital like every day save for weekends, my time was a bit limited this time.

Next time I'll be more on-top of it.

(laffin' at your joke, though. :p)

Tales of the Borderlands
Tales from the Borderlands: Three people voted for it. Seven points total. Four honourable mentions.

Stella Glow ROBBED. Always seems to be that way with Mitsuda games these days. Arc Rise Fantasia was the same.
Stella Glow: 2 honourable mentions. Two people voted for it; three points in total.

I'd say wait until 3.2 drops. A few of us in my FC were talking about it, and it's kinda like... I feel like things weren't handled too well for Patch 3.1 (especially 3.15), and the current end/postgame isn't too satisfactory (hence why I log to practice Coil or do dumb 2-3-man extreme runs with people in my FC because we're dumb like that). They're going to make it easier for newbies to learn their jobs, from what I remember. Hopefully more (nicer) people will be willing to run content at that point.

Because at this point, it kind of feels like a rat race that I just like to sit back and watch while crafting or undersizing and actually having fun.

Great choices overall. Also thanks for linking to Blumenkranz from Sawano. I needed to listen to it again today. :D
This is where CorvoSol laughs at me endlessly.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter: Just your 2-point vote.
The Order: Six people voted for it. It got 9 points in total, and 0 honourable mentions.

We had some great soundtracks this year. Here's to a good 2016, hopefully it can top last years.

BTW for those who voted for Trails of Cold Steel, they arranged an awesome album for their top osts. Definitely much more epic than the ones in game. And if you didn't play this game in time, check it out if you, especially if you like orchestration.

First off, thanks so much Schala to you and co for putting this together. By far my favorite of the GAF voting threads.

I'll be going over the lists in the next couple of days while I plunk out some stuff.

I need to play Undertale.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
oh god i forgot to vote and would have been able to make Splatoon number 3 overall since it would be my top pick

woops. You win this round, Geralt.

Great work on the thread, as always.

Stella Glow ROBBED. Always seems to be that way with Mitsuda games these days. Arc Rise Fantasia was the same.

Take it easy man, it's a matter of opinions.

I played Stella Glow and did not find the music stellar, specially when compared to other titles released this year.

Not saying I'm right, or you're wrong, but this is a popular vote after all, where different individuals with different opinions cast their votes.

I felt bad that this entire year I didn't play enough games (I blame you, Splatoon) to truly take part in voting for anything, but seeing how far up Undertale and Splatoon are, I can't help but feel like I'm living vicariously through this all. Good show guys.

Also, Schala not putting up the factual best song from Splatoon: Sucker Punch. Good to see Ink or Sink mentioned though, that track is a banger. :lol

Not upset, was just doing the typical "ROBBED" thing people always do here. I knew it wasn't going to be mentioned much.

I gotta disagree, every one of the top 15 is distinct and snazzy in their own way. 2011 was just beast-mode period.

Heard about it. Heard it. Got my face rocked off by it.

Thanks for the info. Salute to the others, who voted for the The Order. Shame there's no love for Ethan Carter though. :/

On a side note, it's unfortunate so few soundtracks are made available for purchase. I wager there would be a decent amount of potential buyers, and the costs of bringing them to the digital stores shouldn't be high, if they don't feature licensed material.

Well, part of the reason why I had to slum and buy stuff off of Japanese iTunes this year instead of actually importing the discs like I usually do is because the Canadian dollar is trash. Soundtracks can be pretty expensive if you import (like, if you import a lot, the cost adds up -- but in a case like that, you're better off ordering from Amazon Japan to justify the shipping cost). I think I ended up buying more physical soundtracks for other people this year than for myself!!

But yeah, I sympathize. The first soundtrack I bought with my own saved up money, Chrono Cross, was like... oh man, it was $50 to import at the time? FF8--my second--was a bit more expensive. It's great if you have physical copies, though. Sometimes they come with extra stuff, but I value the liner notes.

Not upset, was just doing the typical "ROBBED" thing people always do here. I knew it wasn't going to be mentioned much.
lol, I fell off the face of the Earth for the last two weeks so I had to have someone explain the meme to me. Whatevs, I've known you for years so I know you're cool.

I think I had you, Coldman, EmCee. and a few other folks on twitter throwing tracks at me when I asked for them like months ago, so I just went with the first few I jotted down, lol.

I feel the same way about GotY. I was asked if I was going to post anything, and I did start writing a post, but I dunno. It'd probably be only five games long.

pls add Super Mystery Dungeon to archive soon pls
Done. this jam is hot

I'm a bit surprised they didn't bother with a Sen II Super Arrange yet. Sen II was my favourite album last year, and I felt it stood head and shoulders above Sen I. I would've loved to have a Super Arrange album for that game to grade this year, but alas, I didn't.

oh god i forgot to vote and would have been able to make Splatoon number 3 overall since it would be my top pick.
I was honestly wondering when you were gonna vote, cuz I missed your writeup this year. :O

I was all, "Where's Papercuts at? Papercuts usually sells me on a thing if I need to give a thing a second listen." Next year, though!!

I know I have to listen to almost every soundtrack released every year (even the minor Bandcamp ones), but sometimes people will say something in their writeups for something I've listened to before in my evaluation that catches my eye and forces me to give something another chance. That's why I volunteered for this thread last year. I like organizing it (even though my friends get to hear my whining), and I love reading the posts and encouraging people to write more. I get to know other posters better, and I get to listen to cool stuff.
