NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

I was just wondering... I'm getting SF IV, and wanted to get an arcade stick. From what I understand, the MadCatz one sucks... which blows. Any recommendations for under $100.00?

Anyone with the TE stick having any problems? The moment I see an inkling of a problem, this thing is canceled so fast...

Stick is insanely clean. I can't imagine anything going wrong with them. The only thing I've noticed with mine is simple cosmetic variations where the different colored parts are joined. They are not as tight and seamless and there is some variation across the stick but it is perfectly adequate for a stick at only $150: think more like a Pontiac as opposed to an Audi. That said, stick looks like a Ferrari.

Still patiently awaiting word on Amazon. I've donated my 360 TE preorder to my brother and I'm going to be using the new HRAP EX-SE in its place but I'd still like confirmation if they are shipping out by the 25th or, indeed, we've gotta wait till early March.

Who told you that? Someone who works at Hori?

In Aurean Mentat's defense, the lower-end Madcatz stick seemingly does suck. I don't have one myself, but everything posted in this thread and elsewhere paint an extremely unflattering portrait of the $80 Madcatz stick. If the PCB really is slowly being destroyed as one uses the stick...I don't know what to say about that. It's a completely defectively designed product. No matter if it's issues are solved by replacing the stick and buttons, that effectively makes it a $130 - $150 stick, and the gamer on a budget may as well look elsewhere.

Aurean Mentat: I would buy an HRAP3, Amazon has it for $99. Unless you're on a 360, in which case I'd refer you to someone else who owns a 360. I am not that person.

I have one too and I love it, I personally wouldn't get the HRAP because I enjoy the option to use the six buttons straight-across which the FightStick offers.

In what way is the PCB slowly being destroyed? The stick hasn't been out very long at all so I'm curious to know what I should be looking for since I haven't heard any of this

I am currently building a stick and its not cheap but it is close if not under the $80 for a shitty madcatz stick. The parts I used are not the cheapest but work well.

I got 8 sanwa buttons and a JLF from sanwa also.

The parts shipped from lizardlick are under $60 and then you just need a box. I am building one for under $15 with wood and lexan. Ill post some pictures when its done but just a heads up if you don't mind building its not bad. I also got the PCB for the 360 from game stop. Its hard to find on their site but go to Google and search "gamestop live retro" and it shows what stores if any have it close. Its $10 and easy to hack for a stick.

Check out the custom thread on the srk site for some badass pictures of what is possible.

there's a loose washer in the joystick that rubs against the traces on the joystick pcb causing "sticking" where the game registers constant movement in one direction when the stick should be neutral. it seems to be hitting a lot of people and some i think have started having problems after as little as 40 minutes of play.

Not sure if this is alright to post in here, but if anyone is looking for a good entry level stick, I'm looking to sell my HORI Xbox 360 Fighting Stick EX 2. Stick is in great condition, well taken care of, and comes with original box. Looking for $45 shipped OBO in the U.S. Seems like a fair price, lemme know if your interested.

On a side note, my amazon order for the TE stick is still scheduled for 2/24. Almost tempted to just overnight the HRAP EX instead, the wait is killing me.

The problem is that the sticks are produced from a factory line -- which obviously indicates that 99.9% of the sticks are identical. If several sticks are faulty, then there is no reason to believe my SE fightstick isn't scratching up the insides either.

If anyone knows that if your stick isn't sticking and isn't causing damages, I'm good. But I fear that it's still scratching up the board even when the stick isn't physically sticking.

Does anyone know of retail stores that sell the HRAP3 EX (btw, what's the official name of it)

I can vouch for the SE being destroyed thing, as it apparently just happened to me (crossposting from what I said in the SF4 thread).

I had the sticking problem where the stick would keep the left every once in a while instead of returning to neutral. A quick circling of the joystick fixed the problem, and it didn't happen all that often. So I was able to deal, and was having a blast with it.

Well less than a week after using it and once it got stuck this last time, unsticking it resulted in the down direction no longer registering at all. Which sucks.

I have a new stick on order which will be here in a week or two, but for a stock stick I really can't recommend the SE stick unless you're willing to roll the dice and deal with either replacing the stick or using your warranty with Mad Catz.

hori real arcade pro 3 ex
don't know of any retail stores that sell it but amazon has it

How long is the Mad Catz warranty on the SE stick anyway? (in Canada if it's any different). I'll likely have a tough time finding one at EB (got credit) in the first few weeks, but I definitely would like to pick one up. I would hope to be able to get one in early march, first week if at all possible.

I asked this too earlier but it quickly got hidden in the thread, but could you not just solder or super glue the washer down from the outside edges? In that video the guy's big problem was not being able to completely take it apart to glue it down from the bottom, but if you just had four solder points around it, or super glue around the edge, would that be a viable fix? Can't say I know much about stick interiors.

My SE stick was $72. If I end up using it for nothing but a housing and a 360 PCB, what are my other options for housing/PCB at a substantial savings over $72? Stuff like the regular Hori sticks for 360 aren't exactly mod friendly.

It's not a bad deal at all - the problem is that it's a mass market product, not a hobbyist part box.

HRAP3 is for PS3 and HRAP EX is for 360.

They're similar but not identical. HRAP EX uses a JLF-TM-8T-SK-K as opposed to the HRAP3's JLF-TM-8T-SK.

The HRAP EX's stick is also soldered to the circuit board via wires instead of using a standard 5-pin connector like the HRAP3.

HRAP3 also has turbo and analog fuctions. HRAP EX has a PMD (headset) port.

Someone said they've seen it in the wild in NYC.

Otherwise, amazon is highly recommended.

For those of you asking about symptoms of the "washer" issue just check out the video that was posted at Giant Bomb. Shows you exactly what happens when you're playing (your joystick will get "stuck" in a direction when it's supposed to be in neutral) and he shows you what the washer looks like.

Even if you're not a big joystick user you should notice that something is messed up when you use it.
That video is amazing :lol. I think I'll be canceling my SE pre-order.

came in today, just waiting for my buttons from LizardLick and i'll be set.

Just curious, did you weight the option for the HRAP EX-SE? About $30 more but already comes with the Seimitsu? Soon to be released too...

I canceled my SE pre-orders as well. I have some TEs that I preordered from Amazon back in Nov. that I'm having trouble justifying the cost on as well.

Hopefully MadCatz will release a statement and fix the QC issues for the next batch they make (if they do make it).

:lol He really should switch to decaf. Man, I'm gonna be kind of bummed if I run into the same problems when I get my SE stick. I've got at least a little hope via some people here who have the SE sticks and aren't having the problems. *crosses fingers*

Eh?

HRAP EX-SE comes with a Seimitsu LS-32 lever and Seimitsu PS-14-G/ PS-14-D buttons. No Sanwa whatsoever.

Scored a SE PS3 stick at GameCrazy today. No more waiting for Amazon!

It's quite nice. :D

edit: Yes, I know about the "it dies over time" crap. I'm truthfully not too worried about it. If I play it enough to kill it then it'll be worth me investing in replacing the stick XD

Alright... I find myself in this very situation. Is there any chance of getting a SFIV TE ordered into Australia anytime in the next couple of months if I don't have a pre-order already?

As someone who is reasonably into but not obsessive about his fighters, would the HRAP EX or EX SE satisfy?

Damn... I was pretty much set on a SFIV SE but this has thrown me for a loop...

also i wanted the stick for SF4 and didn't want to wait. amazon+2 day shipping ftw. Not sure if my LL order will make it in time though. Dude is getting crushed with orders from what I read over at SRK

If your stick is defective it may not take long at all for it to die on you. If it feels strange (sticking, not returning to the neutral position) I'd try to exchange it A.S.A.P. The more you play on it the more damage you'll do. That being said I hope you got a good one and not one of the duds that myself and others got stuck with. I hear they are not ALL bad.

That GiantBomb video is classic, I've watched it like 5 times. I feel his pain but he's funny as hell. At the moment my favorite part is from 6:55 - 7:02. I think we've all been there at some point in time (probably over something OTHER than a joystick though haha).

Where did you get this info ?
HRAP EX-SEimitsu is at least $100 more than a regular HRAP EX

I ended up fixing the washer by using some JBWeld. lol.

I'm kind of over the Fightstick, though. $80 basically for a shell, a faulty one at that. I'd rather just get an HRAP EX at this point. I already have buttons and the HRAP comes with a real Sanwa stick.

Already have two DS HRAP EX on order too, so.. gonna see if I can flip the Fightstick on craigs, if not, back to EB it goes.

Sorry MadCatz, and sorry MarkMan, I have not been won over :(

Sad, but true. Mine comes in this week and I already spent around $60 more for replacement parts. Next time I want a basic stick I think I'll just go with Hori, but I haven't gotten my TE stick yet so we'll see.

Anything that's frustrated the hell out of you will do that if you stick at it long enough. (The mini sledge hammer in the "look at my tools!" section showed he'd been at it a really long time...)

It's all good... again if you have issues with it and feel the need to have it taken care of, please call the tech support line as noted on the website.

Thanks!

Sven comments on TE stick availability, SE stick issues and Tatsunoko vs Capcom

Are all of the Standard Edition Mad Catz sticks bad or only certain ones?

Sven: It's just a few (we have a couple dozen, none [have] problems I'm aware of). Most are fine.

It seems a few came off the line with the issues people are referring to. Mad Catz has already given directives to the factory to watch for the issue so future ones should not have the problem.

Are the Tournament Edition FightSticks here to stay? Or are they going for a 'Limited Edition' type of run? — Daemon Gildas

Sven: There will be more shipping over the next couple months. Not tons, not an unlimited supply, but "more."

I know you said you were thinking about it, but is a Tatsunoko vs. Capcom localization still being looked at? What would the chances be of cutting out the Tatsunoko characters and replacing them with another license? — Carlnunz

Sven: If Tatsunoko vs. Capcom comes over, it will be as TvC, not a different property. That said, I've got no new news at this time. Sorry.

sorry if old.

To add to what the other posters said, the harp ex does come with a sawna stick out the box, the buttons are Hrapbut can be replaced with sanwa or semitsu buttons.

I know in HD Remix it's tough as hell for me to pull off Akuma's teleport with it, but if I plug the same VSHG into my computer I can pull off the same move in 3S easily.
Akuma's teleport in 3S is done with 2 punch buttons, not 3.

I also want to know the answer to dementia's question.

after reading all the SE horror stories, I had planned on modding the SE stick with the JLF and Sanwa buttons. Now I just realized I would have to spend an extra $60 to mod a $70 stick (price i paid for on sale) which makes it now $130. Fuck that. Just ordered an Xbox HRAP EX for the same price w/ 1 day shipping.

Ok so since a lot of people are complaining about the SE SF4 stick, I am going to return it once it ships to me and then order the Hori EX Pro. I have a question though, do gamestop stores take online returns back?

Day 4 and still no Standard Edition stick problems. Granted i've only been messing around in XBLA games, SFII Hyper Fighting, and the HDR trial...so i really havent gotten into any heated matches yet...but still so far so good.
