VOOT on XBLA really is pretty close to an arcade-perfect port (I didn't play 5.66, but going by what I remember from 5.2). But holding the X360 controller so that your fingers are over both the LB/RB buttons and the LT/RT triggers is extremely awkward and uncomfortable, which is the same problem Virtual-On Marz on PS2 had. And the asymmetrical sticks on the X360 controller makes is worse than the DualShock too. Still better than Saturn/DC pads of course, but not ideal.

That said, I can't justify the $400. =(

As for Milky, he really does come off as a cocky egotistical douche sometimes. Was one of my least favorite 1up people.

Milky said on Retronauts that the XBLA version is a perfect port except it feels weird with the 360 controller. but i guess these twin sticks will make the experience arcade perfect. it's just too expensive for me. :lol
:lol

it's not a perfect port, the quick step timing is way more stringent in the XBLA version
a fix is supposed to be on the way though.

Yikes! that is approaching a grand. $400 is just about reaching my threshold for any single item game-related.

I guess if these do wind up getting made and delivered they should hold their value pretty well over time...one good way to digest the cost.

First time posting in this thread. I came here for help from the experts on GAF.

I just got the $80 Madcatz SF4 stick for 360. It seems nice enough for $80, but I absolutely HATE the stick. First and foremost, this is the first arcade stick I've ever had, so I might not entirely know what I'm talking about. But you know how the base of the joystick is square (like, it has directional influence in the four corners)? Well, I want it to have an 8-way directional influence, so the base shape would be an octagon instead of a square.

Is there any way to do this with the $80 stick? I'm pretty advanced in modding hardware, so taking it apart and changing stuff wouldn't be a problem. But I wanted to know if anyone here has done that.

It is so egregious, how can you not admire Hori's balls! I'm hoping the preorder price sticks and they don't raise it in October. I was really expecting $450-$500 for importers, so a little something positive. I gotta go buy VOOT now and see if I like the game. It has been a long time since I've played the arcade version.
To be fair, the two JLJs in that stick are probably the bulk of the cost. I thought about attempting to build a twin-stick myself, but it'd probably end up being in the $250-$300 range, solely on account of the JLJ's cost. That's not to say I won't go through with it at some point, though...

Thanks dude. Now I'm looking for a speedy, cheap, and reliable site. How's this look?

I think you need to replace the whole stick. MarkMan posted the model numbers above.

JLF with square gate: http://www.modchipman.com/sanwa-jlftp8yt-joystick-p-1641.html

Ordering from Modchipman should be fine. Other people have conducted business with them without issue. Price is kind of high, though, probably due to the run on arcade parts (which is still going on?). Shipping shouldn't be that much, however, so I guess it balances it out.

First off, FUUUUUUUUUCK. When tinkering around with the stock buttons (one of them didn't press down the whole way - it came like that), I totally fucking broke it when trying to take it out. The solderless connections were on the button WAY too tight, and in my struggle, I straight up broke the button.

Now I'm faced with an issue. I can either A, take it back to GameStop (since the button way technically broken to begin with), or B, buy all new buttons for it, which would probably be expensive.

Gah... What do I do? Arcade sticks are hard enough to find. >_>

Secondly (in response to the quote), I think I can just order the gate by itself, because it'll fit the stock stick.

In what way is the button broken? Also, a lot of people here ripped the stock buttons out of their SE sticks. Maybe someone has a few laying around?

I actually just called my GameStop and told them what happened. They said to just bring it back and get a different one. I guess I'll do that.

So I cancelled my amazon.ca preorder. Needed a stick so badly that I ordered Hori Fighting Stick 3 before realizing it's not mod-friendly and is has a 4-way gate which I don't need especially when I'm buying it for 2D fighting games.

Damn you Canada and your lack of fightsticks...

Let's clarify again everyone.

gate should use SHAPES as it's descriptor. ie square gate or octagonal gate.

Let's not use the 4/8 way thing because if it was a 4 way stick it would only input 4 directions, not the diagonals lol.

-

Also. It is hip to be square. I say stick with it. It is the standard. It might not be your standard, but it is the standard for Japanese arcade sticks. If you can play on that, you can adapt to pretty much anything IMO.

Damn... DAMN. DAMN YOU MARKMAN!

Yes, I meant to say square gate, not 4-way :/ (Again, I have a small problem where I type something else and think something else. Should be tagged or something :lol)

Alright, sticking to it (no puns intended). Two sticks for $100 is a pretty good deal and I'll take this as a starting point to the next big goal :D

Hell yeah! Finally got the lower-end model of the Mad Catz sticks. Shit is way cool. I was expecting an EX2-like stick but it is way, way heavier and better. Now that I've got the complete Mad Catz collection I'm ready for more. Hear that MarkMan? My wallet is creaking open...bring it on!

Is there any benefit or big reason to the square gate? I know it may be good for 3d games like tekken and soul calibur, but it seems not very practical for 2d fighters that use quarter circles at the corners.

YES BOSS! I have a lot of shit you might like then over the course of the next 12 months ;)

!!!!!

I'd been going back and forth on the SE for the last few months. Glad I finally bit! I love the form-factor with the slope. I'm thinking I might use this for my shmups since it is smaller and cuter.

I put in an octagonal gate when I modded my SE, but quickly switched back to a square gate. I'm sure it's all down to personal preference, but I didn't find the oct. helped with quarter circular movements at all, it felt like I HAD to ride the gate, as opposed to freely making a circular motion in the space of the square gate.

Square gates are MUCH better for charge characters, and once you get used to doing quarter circles (it's not really hard, despite what might think) they work flawlessly for every kind of character. They're standard in japanese arcade machines for all fighters, octagonal gates are only used in the US I think.

Amazon.com? Hm... that's not what I heard. I'll double check on this.

I used a SE stick the other day for the first time at a local SF gathering/tourney and I think it's fine. It's the best stick you'll get at that price, and if you wish to replace the stick and buttons with true arcade-spec parts down the road, they're a cinch to swap in.

They're USB. The PS3 version of the fightstick is a regualr HID-compliant plug and play device. It works on most Windows and Linux PCs right out of the box. The 360 version requires a driver download, but it also works on PC.

Tell AlexMan that I said his stick is awesome, and then tell him to stop beating me in tourneys.

Also, there's something funny to me about MarkMan's brother having a standard edition stick.

Sup yeb... I've seen you beasting with Gen on XBL!

lol, we have TEs but he likes the SE for lap play... go figure.

Anybody grab a HRAP3 SE preorder from Akihabara? I wasn't paying attention and missed it. :-( Now just waiting for NCSX to come through. I emailed them but they do not know yet (as of yesterday).

Yeah, slipped my mind. Fingers crossed for NCS. They've come through with all my other rare preorders before but it is getting dangerously close to the street date.

JapanVideoGames has it listed but they are gouging at $300 and I don't support that kind of practice.

If I miss out on getting one I'm going to have a very big hole in my heart ALL next week. :lol

I was able to get on Aki's pre-order list. Comes out to approx $215.00 with EMS shipping. Still debating if it's worth it. I'm not a fan of that button layout. But then again, I don't know if I'll actually use it.:lol
Damn you GAF - got me into collecting these things now.

Post pics as soon as it arrives! With EMS from Japan you will be, like, the first to get it (you are in NA, no?)!

That price is fair. It will probably be around $235 shipped from NCS.

Yup I'm in NA - still a little apprehensive to pull the trigger. We shall see.

blah ordered an SE for myself also...thanks to that awesome megaman one lol
Anyone here dual mod sticks for a price? Probably my TE ...but maybe SE also? :D

The Madcatz SFIV sticks are currently still not BC. They won't work with PS2 games.

Nope. They snap (or screw) right in. If you're using screw-ins, the nut for the light kick button might be a little snug against the stick's mounting bracket but that would be the only issue.

I mean the LS-32 stick, not the buttons! Gonna keep those Sanwa, I reckon.
