NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

I picked up an SE today as well as finding a spot in NY (VGNY on Bowery and 6th St.) that had JLFs and OBSF-30s in stock. Picked them up and had no problems putting in the six buttons, but when I had to remove the metal mounting plate so I could use it with the JLF, 2 of the stock screws stripped. So now I'm kind of stuck. I'm planning on going to Home Depot to see if they can strip the screws for me with out damaging the plate and picking up some replacements. Anyone know what else I could do if that doesn't work out?

Also, I'm going to be switching to a six button layout from the SE's standard eight and am looking into button hole plugs. The Sanwa plugs are standard size, but I also found that Yenox plugs are also 30mm/1.25" and should fit the opening in stick. Will I have any problems using the Yenox plugs opposed to the Sanwa ones?

Thanks guys, changing the buttons was a breeze thanks to some of the posts here and the tutorials on SRK. I hope I can get the JLF in tomorrow and start using my pseudo-TE. :D

PS. Orange OBSFs are awesome.

So HELLO THAR peoples, I live in canada and am having a bitch of a time finding ANY arcade stick that doesn't come from another country or even another hemisphere. This means I wind up not only dealing with what I'll dub the SF4 markup(anywhere from 10-100% above regular value) but the shipping is obscene- like 35-100 dollars american.

Is there any hope for me to find even the regular street fighter 4 stick for 360 ? I live near edmonton btw.
Your best bet is to look in smaller, mom-and-pop game stores. In Toronto, I've seen the MGS4 80GB PS3 BC model, several Soul Calibur 4 FSEX2 sticks, and a bunch of HRAP3s. There was once a HRAPEX, but I couldn't justify the price to myself, and when I did, it was gone. =(

I eventually bought a FSEX2 and replaced the innards with Seimitsu parts. Cost me more than I expected because I had to buy the tools, but it was a fun afternoon of modding. =)

Are square gated cherry sticks really the best? I tried using them and the corners make it hard to do quarter circles.. Also what is the point of the clickity sound they make when turning them, benefits?

Nice EX2! It reminds me of mine. Except unlike mine, yours probably works :/
Is that a Seimitsu lever as well? I left the stock Hori one in mine.
Yeah, I wanted to go all the way with my first mod, just short of changing the PCB. I even traced a vector of the image that I wanted to use because I couldn't find a higher resolution version on the Internet. =)

Yours doesn't work anymore? What happened to it?

The PCB died. Eventually certain buttons just stopped working in pairs. Same thing happened to DCB and a couple of other posters IIRC. Someday I might replace he PCB someday but at this point I have an HRAP and FSTE so it's not a priority.

Yikes, I hope that doesn't happen to mine. How long have you had yours? I did this mod about half a year ago, but I haven't touched it in the last month or so. Well, if it does die, I can at least recover the parts.

FINALLY managed to track down a Madcatz fighting stick. They're impossible to find in Vancouver, even on craigslist but an obscure EB Games store waaay out in Misison had one. According to Google maps I drove 66.9 km to get it :lol

I modded it with seimitsu buttons and it's fantastic. Now I just got to start thinking about a new graphic for it.

It's time for me to order some buttons. Can't believe how much they are now. I thought I saw them for a dollar a piece before the Madcatz craze? My buttons are starting to stick pretty bad now though so it'll be worth it.

"I thought I saw them for a dollar a piece before the Madcatz craze?"

Haha...no. If you did, you should've linked that shit up. 2.50-3.00 was what I saw when I modded my HRAP last may.

Saw this on Markman's flickr...

I'm going to assume its a crappy FSEX2/FS3 like the Soul Calibur promo sticks.
Secretly, I want Namco to revive their PS1 stick for the current generation, but lol @ that happening.

That PS1 stick is pure sex. I still love mine. I want to mod it somehow for 360/ps3, I hope they make a new one for current gen as well.

My friend who works at GameStop texted me about that the other day -- I already had T6 preordered -- but based on that price, I'm guessing you're right about which stick it is. I told my buddy the SFIV TE I have was just fine.

Yenox plugs will work no problem. I'm assuming the JLF you bought didnt come with a mounting plate which IMHO is a ripoff. May I suggest just ordering from LL (they're open today) and use the one you bought as a spare? Save yourself the hassle.

So I managed to get the screws out from the metal plate and MadCatz stock stick. When I put the metal plate on the JLF, the screws (which were still good enough to use) were now too small.

Anyone know the size of the screws I need to attach the MadCatz metal plate to the JLF?

Has anyone here dealt with A Twisty Fluken before as far as purchases go? He was supposed to ship out an HRAP3 last Thursday and I have not heard from him since then, and I'm getting quite concerned. I've sent him multiple PMs to no avail.

Thanks bud. I did some clever engineering (I like to think so anyway :P) and managed to get the plate separated and installed on my JLF. It stinks that I didn't get the complete package with the JLF but that's the price of getting the parts immediately opposed to getting it a month and a half from now like I would if I went through LL.

I guess I will pick up the Yenox plugs though. Right now, I still have the stock buttons in the right most holes in my SE.

Ow Ow Ow!

My Sanwa parts arrived this morning, so I'm putting the parts in my Madcatz SE. I love how the button connectors are called "quick disconnect"!

I finally got all of them disconnected, but getting the new buttons back in is hard work. I'm being careful not to push the button itself, but it's really difficult applying enough pressure to the rim, I've done two and my fingers are red raw. I'm going to need a few days for them to recover before I even use the thing when it's finally done! :lol

*sigh*

So I connected the joystick to the 360, the buttons work fine, but the joystick doesn't register at all. I connected the old one back up again, and that doesn't work either. I guess I fucked the cable up somehow (I was careful, disconnected by the white plug, not the wires).

Is this the right one: http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/sanwa-jlf-h.htm

That cable would be pretty hard to mess up, short of cutting through one of the leads entirely. Probably something else. If it is the cable, then check to make sure there is contact in the white connector for each of the leads. No reason to replace the harness.

How would I check if there is contact? When I plug the connector into the stick, I can't tell any difference when I look at the tiny holes on top.

That's the only thing that connects the stick right? I've tried it both ways (at first I thought it might be upside down). I can't think what else it would be, the buttons register on the 360, just not the stick.

That's what I'm saying...it would be pretty tough to mess the cable up. Even the white connector is pretty robust. Perhaps somebody with more experience on that stick will chime in.

Did you happen to take a before-photo prior to working? If so, then retrace your work and make sure everything matches. Also, not familiar with the SE, but there might be a ground you forgot to reconnect.

Does this help:

All this limited shipments of arcade sticks is really lame as it drives up the prices. I just want HRAP 3 to be under $100 and available in stores or free shipping.

If anyone in the Dayton, Ohio area needs a stick (even though they are kinda crappy) Toys R Us (by the Mall) has a few of the Hori sticks.

Amazon has Fightstick SEs in stock for both 360 and PS3 right now. If you don't mind the SFIV branding, you could even put a pro joystick in there for about the same as a HRAP.

Check amazon.com and arcadeshock on or around June 15

otherwise, take the SE route like YB said.

For those uninterested or incapable of modding, aren't the SE sticks crap?

I own an SE stick, and I see nothing wrong with them tbh. I use this when I go out and don't want to lug around the bigger TE stick. They work great..and I play no better or worse with them than the TE. No washer problems.

I never had any problems with mine either. however, when I modded them both with sanwa bits it immediately felt alot better. buttons are much better and the stick feels a little better.

I did have an issue with both where the joystick stopped working... upon opening I realised that the sanwa stick and the connector to the pcb can come loose and fall right off which happened to each of my sticks. are rather pants soiling experience. however, a bit of super glue fixed it right up.ç

I also fucked all the screws on the bottom of my sticks from constant opening and reclosing it.... don´t use a power drill with a screw bit attached to open these. do it the slow way with a proper sized manual screwdriver. lesson learned.

the artwork can be swapped in the SE though, right?

i still need to pick one of these up. my EX is getting worn out from too much RFA.

After putting in the Sanwa parts, I haven't really noticed much difference. The buttons feel a tiny bit better maybe, one of the standard ones was going, but other than that I didn't mind the feel of them. I am really happy with my SE stick, it's improved my game no end.

Modding is simple (despite my earlier posts), there's no soldering, it's buy, screw, pop out, pop in, done.

On a side note, I also put in an octagonal gate and I think I prefer the square one, maybe just a case of getting used to it, but I'm going to put the square one back in the octagonal one was giving me problems with charge characters and player one side ultras today.

Was the tekken 5 ultimate edition arcade stick a HRAP3 ? Because I think that was a pretty good deal if it was.
The US T5 stick is not an HRAP at all. It has Hori Buttons soldered directly to the PCB and a Hori lever. It shares only the case shape and button layout of an HRAP1

The Japanese T5 stick had a Sanwa JLF lever but Hori buttons soldered directly to the PCB

Ha! Guess What?
My Pre Order for the Street Fighter TE has arrived. Gamestop called me today to come pick it up. Can't go until tomorrow, but it's there. Wasn't even sure if I even still wanted it since it's been so long, but I have been wanting a Joystick forever (7 years or so).

This is Germany btw.

It is 300% worth the money and the wait. I've beat the fuck out of mine (I tend to rage when I'm home alone and I lose) and it hasn't even missed a beat.

Even after it was accidentaly chucked across the room.

lucky guy

mine shipped dead on arrival

Yeah, I guess I can finally Play Street Fighter. I gave up on it with the 360 pad. Was getting frustrated trying to do moves how and when I wanted.

Ordering parts for my Agetec mod and going by an online guide. Can anybody confirm that the below pic from LL is the is the same one used in the mod pic?

Thinking about selling my TE, just not feeling the form. Maybe I'll slam in some seimitsus to try and win my heart back :P

But seriously, ever since I got my akuma-dual-modded VSHG back I haven't really wanted to use anything else :/

i don't think you'll need to worry about it, you can reorient the pcb however you want before soldering the wires it just changes which pin corresponds to which direction.

Ok, thank you. That explains the almost identical version they sell for the Mad Catz SE.
