NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

I just pre-ordered the TE stick and after quite a bit of deliberation, decided X360.

The thing that pushed me over the edge was the shmup factor.

I cant find any of these anywhere online. I must be looking in the wrong places.

Also what is this talk of more stick info at CES? Do we not already know almost everything about the TE stick?

Everything will be up for discussion after CES. And yea, there is a lot of other things people don't know yet. ;)

This is going to sound odd, but is there any way to tighten up the stick on the VF HG? It's just me I guess, but the stick itself is a bit too loose/sensitive for me on fighters like SF HD Remix. I'm really uncomfortable using it with the game as it is.

The ghetto way is to take the spring out and stretch it out and then tape around the bottom of the actuator with electrical tape.

So I've been looking into building my own stick for sf4. I've read all over the srk forums and started to learn what I need to do. However, I'm not very creative, and was wondering if there is just a straight step-by-step guide for building a 360 stick. As in, all of the woodwork and wiring explained decently in-depth. I just want a fun side project for myself and want to end up with a good stick (sanwa parts, solid build).

Sites like instructables and make have quite a few guides.

They should have a made a dual compatible stick. I would pay quite a bit extra for that. :-/

I was in this camp for a long while, that's why I kept looking at the Arcade in a Box... and I was a click away from buying, but with X-mas, I got enough gift cards where it became too cheap to get 2 sticks... so I went the two stick route instead of a consolidated stick.

Alright so here's the question.

Tekken, Street Fighter, KOF, etc.

What's your take on how they play? 8-way plate versus octagonal. This of course goes along the line with the Sanwa JLF.

For me I play very well with Tekken and VF on the 8-way plate. Street Fighter and KOF. Not so great. I have a hard time doing supers because I feel a little restricted with the corners. Now if I go with a octagonal plate, would that hurt my Tekken and VF play? Improve my Street Fighter and KOF play? What's your experiences with these plates.

Paycheck + Recklessness = HRAP3 Purchase

Looks like I'll have an SF4 TE Stick and an HRAP3. Yay for buying things!

I asked this a couple pages back... Don't the HRAPs come with a square gate?

And congrats on your purchase Ryder? Are you going to buy buttons?

I'm not sure if I've asked this or if it's been answered here (can't find the answer) but what's the difference between a square gate and an 8 way gate? I'm getting an 8 way gate for my SF TE Stick because of the stick that comes attached to it, but I'm not really sure what's the difference is. Also what's more preferred for fighters, square or 8 way?

Thanks

Well, people shouldn't really say "8 way" because a Square gate is an 8-way gate, but what they mean is octagonal. Square gates are literally square. If you were to move a stick with a square gate around 360 degrees, it would move in the shape of a square. The same deal with octagonal gates, if you were to move them around 360 degrees, the stick would move in the shape of an octagon.

If you scroll down a bit you'll see diagrams of a square gate and an octagonal one.

As far as which is more preferred, square gates are the standard in Japan, I believe. In America, most machines are set up with Happ sticks that have circular gates or octagonal gates.

Oh I get it now. Thanks. I always was confused when people talked about it.

Isn't that the same type of gate?

edit: yeah thanks Teknopathic.

Thanks! And to answer your first question, I'm almost positive the HRAPs have square gates, and to answer your second question, I'm still debating between getting some Sanwa buttons or Seimitsu from Lizardlick. Any tips? Depending on which buttons I get, I'll decide what kind of top to get on the stick. I'm kinda tempted to go for those nice translucent Seimitsu buttons along with a bubbletop :)

Imagine you're holding the stick in your hand. As you make a 360 motion, on a square gate, you will feel four corners at the diagonals (i.e. a square). An octagonal gate is similar, but with 8 corners (one for each direction, U D L R and diagonals). It really comes down to personal preference. As I understand it, square gates are the standard in Japanese arcades, which I was not used to the first time I used a square gate, so it took some getting used to. The better of the two is the one that feels better to you imo :D

I was only confused because I was going to change parts and didn't understand what they meant by 8-way. The Happ 8-Way Competition Joystick http://www.lizardlickamusements.com/pages/joysticks.shtml first one. I personally like that top over the ball top. I realized it's just a square gate. :p

I'm pretty sure it's fairly non-trivial (rewiring, case modification, etc.) to put a Happ stick into a case designed to hold a Sanwa/Seimitsu stick (Markman would probably have to chime in here). If you like the bat top, you should probably look into getting: the Sanwa LB-30-N Joystick Bat Top and Sanwa Joystick Adapter, both on the same page.

I think he said the same thing earlier. I'll look into it a bit more and probably do what you recommend since I wouldn't have to open anything to switch the tops.

Nah, you'll still have to open it up, someone posted a pic on the last page with the bottom of a stick and instructions on how to change a top. It's pretty simple.

If a casing is designed to fit a Sanwa/Seimitsu stick... and you want to put in Happ, it'll be a case by case basis. Happ parts are HUGE.

The clearance level needed for the mounting area on a Happ stick is way bigger/deeper than Japanese sticks.

I just looked one up, yup it's not that hard. Got it down. Thanks for your help. Now we wait.

I'll just change the top then. I don't want to mess anything up :p

Hi All

I have a Street Fighter Anniversary Arcade Stick & the joystick for it is not in the middle anymore & keeps jumping forward when I'm playing Street Fighter, is it really simple to fix this problem? also if ever need new buttons for it, what buttons should I order? does this stick take sanwa parts?

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me : )

So are you getting the TE stick for 360 or ps3? Maybe I will do this too. Also where are you ordering the hrap from?

Does anyone know how hard it is to mod a T5 anniversary stick? Its basically just an hrap, right?

also why on gamestop.com do I not have the option to do in store pickup?

The US Tekken 5 stick just looks like a HRAP - it has a Hori Stick instead of Sanwa, and the buttons are soldered to the PCB rather than connected with quick disconnects. There is this tutorial but the images are broken now.. you might still be able to follow it though.

Well I ordered up one of the octagonal plates since they're so easy to swap out for the 8-way plates. I'll post up some personal impressions later. They all say it's a matter of preference but I rather give impressions on the games.

My guess is that Street Fighter will be easier to play. Tekken I'm not so sure about. It'll probably kill my EWGF but we'll see.

Just ordered me a couple of white bats for my TE sticks.......now I just got to get some Mad Katz Extension cables from amazon and I'm all set.

February 17th can't come soon enough.:D

Getting the 360 TE, got it on preorder. I actually made a decently long post on the previous page responding to one of your posts, I mentioned in it that I was getting the 360 stick, now I'm sad because my post was lost... noooooo :p

I ordered my HRAP3 from Amazon, should be coming in Monday!

I'm thinking of picking up a Hori EX2 (casual fighting game fan/XBLA).

How difficult is it to swap the stock stick for a octagon gate and Sanwa bat?

Looking at this guide, it seems really simple, but I'd like to get some more personal stories if I could.

easy

if you wish to swap the buttons it gets a bit harder

Would you recommend paying the extra $13 or so bucks and just getting SFIV FightStick over getting a EX2 and modding?

Markman has said that the Fightstick will be easy to modify versus the whole solder and file affair with the EX2. I'd say wait if you can, other wise be like Markman...and just buy every new joystick under the sun.

He's got 70 something and counting...jeeeeez

MM said the buttons at least use QDs on the standard fightstick, so yeah
I'd like to know about the stick's modabilty though

I'm on the fence as of now as to which SFIV arcade stick I want to get. I really want to get the $100 plus one because of its sheer level of craftsmanship. Plus it would be my first time to own something so well crafted for fighting games. The price is pretty much what's holding me back...I know the tag is logical compared to if I were to get something of that level custom made. I've been keeping up with Markman's posts and info but is there are more advice someone can give me?

If you have the money I'd say go for it. Worse case scenario, if it' not for you, it's limited; so theres a good chance you can make back your money and then some if you resell it. I mean, just look at the lucrative resale market for VSHG in North America.

More info is due around CES time (Jan 8-11). Can't come soon enough.. i too will be watching eagerly for the details on the regular stick.

I'm in Australia (sigh) and my options are looking pretty slim. I asked my local shop whether they knew how much or even IF they were getting these sticks, and apparently they'll know in a couple weeks, but i'm not looking forward to the prices...

I don't have a PS3 or 360, and the PC SF4 option is dire (i'm on a Macbook Pro and don't want to tarnish it). I'm thinking 360 Arcade, i mean i can get setup for 1/3 of the price of a PS3, but it's a shame cause i have a PS2 joystick i could have used on PS3 with an adapter...

The SF4TE stick looks godly already and if it's under $200 AU i'll bite...But the regular stick, i'm hoping it's easily modifiable as has been suggested, giving me the freedom to upgrade at a later date.

Apart from the SF4 regular stick, what is the next in line in terms of easily modifiable joysticks for the 360?
