NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread

So I didn't get an answrr and I looked if my budget would allow me a HRAP3. Well I got mine today but I want to go a bit further and mod it. It looks like it's not that complicated. I know here to get the buttons the only question I still have is what material should I print the cover on? Anyone knows the best way to do this?

That's the quick mock up I did:

Hey guys, I looked through this thread and the Street Fighter Arcade Stick thread, but I didn't happen to see the major differences between the Madcatz SF4 Tournament Stick ($150) and the normal Madcatz SF4 Fightstick ($70). Is it just a matter of size and cost, or are the buttons and gate different. I will be buying my second arcade stick in Feb. for SF4 and I am trying to decide between these two. Also, if I missed the info feel free to flame me.

it's been posted to hell and back but I won't flame you

the TE stick uses the same Sanwa arcade-spec parts as vewlix cabs, the standard stick uses cheap clone parts

Yes, I love Hori's simple/clean boxes.

I love the shiny cardboard ;)

Oh and to the ppl inquiring about the limited release of the TE sticks, I can't say a number (sorry), but they are definitely limited.

And is Amazon getting a good chunk ? lol I just want to make sure :)

When did you pre order?

I preordered yesterday. He said I had to cancel within 2 weeks of it coming in, so it sounds like there is some leeway, but that things are going to be tight and only for preorders.

Thanks alot! might take a before I actually buy it, but definitely before SFIV is out though :)

OBSM 30,24 x2 are for the start and select buttons?

Ignore the 24, it was a typo. You don't need to mess with the start/select button. Those 2 OBSM30 are for the button stoppers for 2 of the buttons. Sorry for the typo.

I mix it up.

Lap...

If there's a table, I'll use that.

If it's a flimsy table, I'll try floor.

!

Wait, are we talking about arcade sticks or women?

Table (sturdy) if there is one. Lap as an alternative.

Just print it out on paper, then get it laminated. Then just cut out the holes and spray the back with adhesive.

Amazon shipped out my HRAP3, this should finally make playing fighting games on a console fun again.

He's obviously talking about women. :D

these days I lap it up, due to space limitations, but these days I only play SFII and 3S so those games are easy to play on lap...

but back in the days when I lived on my own I busted out floor mode!!

back in the days I useta play a lot of Guilty Gear too. I still do, but not at home...

GG is NOT a game you wanna play balancing a stick on your lap... trust me.

Thanks for the info guys. Umm...Mark...no...because then I would be talking about the bathroom, car, club or bedroom...

I tried using my HRAP3. It's going to take some getting used to. First, the default buttons for the game are not mapped properly to the face of the joystick. I wonder why they have that button layout (with the R and L buttons). The Saturn pad defaults perfectly to the HD Remix button layout.

I'm coming to grips with the sort of precise nature of how to execute the moves. Do you guys think an octo gate would make a difference? I'm going to try modding one of my HRAP3s with a bat top, octo gate and replacing the 10 buttons with Sanwa OSBF-30s and 24s.

I'll probably leave the other joystick in the box...which is probably what Markman does with his 101 joysticks.

BTW, do you name them?

IMO, the only game an octagonal gate is good for is MvC2.

Beyond that, I'd rather have a square gate; I play charge characters better with it and I only started to be able to pull off shoryukens regularly after using sticks with square gates (vs American bat tops).

So, explain me this.. Why everybody that mods controllers kills those extra two buttons?

I mean... they're extra buttons, right?

I know every arcade in japan only has 6 buttons, but cmon now. The buttons are already there, the holes are there, just pony up and buy the extra 2 buttons and wire them up. (or maybe don't? just leave the original ones there?).

What happens when you bust out an old SNK machine game (or emulator) and you have to use 4 buttons in a row? huh?

Don't need em, and I don't want to accidentally press another button.

"How reckless are you when playing a game? I don't press jab when i want to press fierce, for instance."

Jab and fierce are also on opposite sides of the button layout. Sanwa OBSF-30s are really sensitive (almost too sensitive), and I've definitely pressed extraneous buttons simply by not paying attention to where I had my hand resting.

I just received my HRAP3 from Amazon.com :D It looks and feels pretty good.

What is the best PS3 game to test it out?

Test it on your PC with various emulators if you'd like.

As far as fighting games on PS3 go, I'd suggest any of the following:

Virtua Fighter 5
Super Street Fighter II TURBO HD Remix
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection/ONLINE
Battle Fantasia

Super Turbo, Tekken 5DR, VF5, Soul Calibur IV, Mortal Kombat vs. DC...SFIV in February...

If you have BC, SF Anniversary, SFA Anthology, KOF 200X to 11, VF IV, yadda, yadda...

And why is the octogonal gate only useful in MVC2? Isn't it supposed to give better control?

The layout with the one button lower allows you to put fingers on all buttons independently if you use your thumb. I prefer this.

Oops dp. Yeah, I don't think I could block the other buttons. I'm like Drizzle, I'd want to have the four buttons set right...though when you think about it, the Neo-Geo pad had a different layout, so it's not a huge deal...

I am sooo confused right now. What version of the sf IV limited edition stick do i get PS3 or 360? Someone please give me the rundown. Currently I have a tekken 5 stick for the ps2 (hopefully getting a converter soon)and a hori ex2 for the 360. I am just worried about getting the ps3 version after hearing how the online is worse for hd remix on the ps3. :-/ Also the user base worries me. There is a good chance I will get the game for both systems but I can only afford one of the sticks.

That's pretty much how I feel. Currently have the PS3 TE stick preordered and the game and I already have SF2THDR on PS3 so I'll probably stick with it.

Just look at the games you currently play and what is planned to be released and make your decision...not based on the poor performance of HD Remix...

If you have a T5 stick for PS2 then get a PS2/USB convertor and use it and buy a 360 TE.

Now, if you don't have a stick but have both consoles, base your purchase decision on the fighting game outlook for both systems...

Right now...they're about the same...

PS3

Tekken 6
Blaz Blue
KOF XII
SF IV
MVC 2

360

Tekken 6
Blaz Blue
KOF XII
SF IV
MVC 2
KOF UM 98

I'm dying to get an arcade stick for 360 before the TE comes out. How is the Hori EX?
I have the hori ex2 stick. This is my first time ever using an arcade stick. I never played in the arcades when I was younger. Love the stick though. I have been killing people online with balrog. I would say jump in. I am sure someone will come in here and tell you no though. From personal experience, I love it.

Hey MarkMan, Battle Fantasia isn't out for PS3 in the US. It's 360 only.

You CAN download the demo from the JP PSN store though.

This makes me so sad to hear. :( I was at a Dave and Busters this past weekend (problem #1) and I was shocked to see there were basically no games that were traditional joystick-based games and all the kids were playing these bizarre, over-sized machines that were less game and more experience.. and I kept thinking, there's a whole generation of kids out there that think THIS is an arcade...

MThanded, how old are you by the way? In college right? 19-21? I hope you have an awesome time with this... and I hope we can develop a time machine so you can warn your your younger self....

If its out in jpn you can import right. Ps3 no region specific stuff.

Im 22 just graduated from college.

Yeah man I remember maybe a few times going up to a machine putting a quarter in and being confused as hell. Also where I live in Maryland there are little to no arcades. The only one I went to was at a mall like 30 minutes away from my house. Like I love this damn arcade stick and I am now addicted to street fighter. I actually bought the stick for sc4. I was an avid soul calibur 1 ,2 and 3 player but I always played on a pad. For some reason soul calibur 4 did not do it for me. I got bored very quickly and I loved the previous games. After hearing about hd remix I jumped in. I did rent sf2 turbo for the genesis back in the day but never owned it and I sucked terribly.

I owned mvc2 for dreamcast and I was pretty reasonable at that. For the ps1 I had sf alpha something but I could not play using the pad. Never could train myself to use the shoulder buttons. I wish I could go back and do it all over again.

What does the information about the gates refer to? And why are octos preferable to square or vice versa? I guess if someone could describe the feeling...like how some described Sanwas being more sensitive than Seimeitsu buttons...

Okay, I went hog crazy and bought three sets of Sanwa/Seimietsu buttons, a couple octo gates, a clear Seimeitsu ball top, a Sanwa bat top+adaptor for my two Amazon HRAP 3s and HRAP EX preordered through Arcade Shock.

I disassembled one of my HRAPs to see how difficult it was...and pretty easy...I didn't even realize I had the nut driver in my limited tools.

I doubt I'll be as awesome as 001 and a few others on here and be able to build or electrically modify a stick, but at least I'll be able to improve the experience. I'll probably never unbox my TE sticks...(of course Mark has some info to share with us after CES).

This is the closest there is to an explanation for that chart

An octagonal gate works similar to the way Nintendo analog sticks have 8 notches to help you identify when the stick is in one of those positions. A square gate works the same but with only 4 notches (the diagonals).
The Square gate has the effect of:
a) making it less obvious if you're pushing directly up/left/down/right
b) making it easier to hit diagonals directly (45 degrees on octagonal compared to 90 degrees on square)
c) letting you rotate the gate 45 degrees into a diamond shape, giving you ONLY 4 directions to hit (up/left/down/right), since the diamond shape restricts the joystick from coming into contact with 2 microswitches at once for the diagonals
d) making circular motions less smooth, which is where most people's preference derives from

Just tried using the HRAP in SFA Anthology and HD Remix. Normally, my strong side is the left side or 1P but with the RAP, it's the right side...doh. I have issues consistently hitting uppercuts and supers...

But I'm going to keep giving it the old college try
