NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

One of many WIPs.

Just the face left and then I'll touch up around the edges. Not sure I'm content with the costume though so I might put this on hold to revisit the model sheets. At least the style is getting closer to where I want it for animation.

btw, FiRez you're a big inspiration!

Just finished another piece over the last day. It started 3 am in the morning lol. Some good ol Tonberry

I have a question.

The thought occurred to me that you could use a ruler to measure the length of something like a drawer handle from your perspective and then measure the one you've drawn on paper.

I guess an easier way of explaining it is;

what you drew / perspective length = multiplier

then

perspective length * multiplier = what you should draw

So as long as you measure correctly you can keep everything properly proportioned if I did the math right.

Is this considered a bad way to learn? I figure since you're not using your eyes to judge proportions then you won't develop that skill. I just wanted to get a second opinion.

I like your style. Your two dudes look pretty attractive!

I've got a commission to draw a girl next...gaf, what do?
Well, where's the link for the NSFW version? I'm really curious.

Finished this yesterday

I keep wanting to spend longer on these quick paintings....full version will be on my tumblr eventually.
Your stuff is beautiful. I really like your faces/eyelashes. Your style kind of reminds me of Nocturne-era Kazuma Kaneko.

I think measuring should be regarded as a sense that can be polished through experience and implementation of proven techniques (negative space, pen+thumb measuring, angles relationships, etc..) I've never heard about the method you propose but even so you should try and see if it gives you the results you expect. In my case I prefer to use a combination of the aforementioned.

Started this on my Note 2 today, I will see how it goes.

In that case I think it would be better if I learned and practiced those concepts you mentioned.

If you haven't heard of this method then there's probably a good reason why it's not popular. :)

have you posted anything yet?

I don't think so. Here's what I finished yesterday.

I tried to darken it because my scanner makes everything appear lighter than it is. I didn't add any shading because I was more concerned with trying to get the perspective right/drawing as I see it. I also used a ruler for the floor/wall lines which is why mostly everything else looks wobbly.

I'm currently researching negative space and thumb/pencil measuring. Thumb/pencil measuring in particular sounds very promising and it looks similar to something I tried a few years ago. I'll see if I can dig that up.

Getting J. C. Leyendecker vibes from the face rendering. Nice work.

Leyendecker is probably one of my first great inspirations when it actually came to painting. His sense of style and his taste in men were impeccable. Thanks yo.

Haha now I'm feeling transparent. Kazuma Kaneko's art and design is probably the strongest reason in my investing 150+ hours into Nocturne (unforutnatelly only about 20 in Devil Summoner before I moved to the UK and a dwindling 6 on Digital Devil Saga).

You can see all my work on my tumblr, but yes there are a few NSFW pieces on there so be warned. And thanks for the compliment!

I hate to bump the thread with no work, but I've just have an all around ability block currently, and other stuff I'm working on I can't really show. Need to get back into my studying...

Thanks! They're actually someone else's characters but I'm glad you like them.

Thumb/pencil measuring does sound the closest to what you were describing. For perspective you can also line your pencil up with the angle of the object edge and transfer that to the paper. Actually everything that FiRez mentioned is pretty important for life drawing and definitely not bad ways to learn. I also utilize most of them when I do studies. :)

Looks like I'm having trouble already. When I try to place a border on the diagonal lines three sides match up but the fourth one doesn't connect. I'd be creating a spiral if I were to continue with it.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong since my diagonals match up with the edges of the paper.

Yes, my method now that I think about it more has a lot of unnecessary steps. At least I was kind of close. :)

I want to draw from life for practice so learning these kinds of things should help me a lot.

Great tumblr. I really love your line work in your pencil stuff. I'm no artist, but I'm curious what pencils you use to achieve such stuff. They look very clean. Maybe I'd like to practice one day :P

Also, going through your tumblr right now, I stumbled upon the piece you said was your first commission... it's awesome! I really like the weirder and grotesque pieces when it comes to art, so that's right up my alley. Consider me a fan of your work!

I think I might give up on that viewfinder exercise for now.

I just learned that I can't draw a straight rectangle (even with a ruler) even with all the measurements of each line being correct.

here's the background for the smash fan art I'm making. Still incomplete and not shiny

btw pickle that looks great

Been working on some backgrounds for this app I'm working on. This is the final look although a few things like the fireflies and grass will move. Also playing around with adding a windmill in the background its really bugging me having that open. This is for a puzzle where you break rocks but they aren't in the scene.

Also Loop I can't wait to see that finished i love the art and the style :)

So I finally tried two from the exercise.

Between leaning over the desk and holding the viewfinder up to the screen while trying to draw on the page at the same time, I found while the viewfinder could possibly be useful I found it so frustrating to use that I think it will hurt my progress more than it can help it.

For the cat I tried the pencil/thumb measuring to get the proportions right. The result ended up wider than it should be. I guess you can do the measuring sideways as well? I only did it vertically since that's what was shown on the page where I read about it.

why are you holding up the viewfinder to a screen? do you have any still life you can use? i don't really know if viewfinders are for everyone but i did use them in class so i thought it might help you.

i think you're reviewing your drawings too harshly.

They're nice starts but I do think you're focusing a little too much on getting the exact proportions. It's ok to be a little off! Try to loosen up more and tackle the picture all at once instead of starting with an outline of the entire object. I think you might benefit from reading this.

The instruction said to use the viewfinder to get the object within the frame. Maybe I should have changed the zoom level since I couldn't get just the duck in the frame unless I held it up to the screen. I'll try using it again tomorrow with something around the house.

I felt like like stopping out of frustration/confusion a few times but I managed to resist so I'll at least consider this a victory in that respect.

The aim of the exercise was to outline the object while using a viewfinder to get the proportions as close as possible. I understand for other things but the instruction was specific in this regard.

Funnily enough I do have that book from a few years ago. I only did a few things in it however as I eventually got to a part where you need a transparent viewfinder which I didn't have. I'm not sure how many of the exercises use it but it didn't go well for my already crippled self-confidence.

I should probably take a look at it again since I'm back in the game now.

Also, that WIP reminds me of DND.

Oh right. Well it'd probably feel more natural using it on something not in the screen then!

Oh, my bad. Didn't realize you were following instructions haha. And yeah a couple of people have recommended that book to help break in to drawing. You should definitely give it another look!

Thanks! I have various pencils I switch between depending on what I'm doing but my universal pencil is my Parker .5mm. There's an all metal one, but I just got the one with the plastic end which i prefer since it's not as cold to hold. My most used pencil by far, all my moleskine sketches are done almost exclusively with this. If I need heavier tones though, I use Derwent or Stradtler pencils, typically the 2B-4B range. I'd say the main thing to keeping pencil work "clean" though is using nearly -one- line for everything. If something looks sketchy, erase it, and redraw it with one single line/stroke.

Managed to get some sfw stuff done. I should have posted it in stages but time is not on my side.

I'm not incredibly satisfied with the design on this one, but I think the more I do, the more creative I'll get. I hope. A test run for some commissions I'll be offering in the near future.

Also, it's good to see pickle and sub-zero posting again!

Done some Christmas card commissions based off the 12 Days of Christmas

Each done in roughly 4 hours (some a bit less). Not my best but, I also hate drawing things really tiny. Feel completely out of the zone lately. I don't think I'll be doing themed commissions for a while...ever.

Edit: FiRez, that picture is genuinely freaking me out. It's painted well but reminds me AVG and when I use to scan for viruses back in the day and this guy came up. This face has haunted me for years. Thought you would like to know that.
