I really wish I could spend more time on this. Trying to work on my values and softness. I feel like my work has been a bit too rough recently. I might go back to this one; I feel like I probably could have pushed this one a little bit further. Back to commissions...

Wow CB, I absolutely love your work!

I'm really struggling on my Cintiq, or rather I should say i'm struggling with using my old cintiq as my sole monitor. Thankfully I ordered a usb to vga adaptor so I can get a second monitor to double check my coloring again.

Man, your stuff is so awesome. You got a really cool style going on.

For me this last 7 days my brother and his wife were visiting me here in Japan so I didn't even turn my PC on, but I did a couple rough sketches of a couple things we visited, to show them how I would do it for a travel journal like the one I did during my trip to India.

The sketches are, as I said, very rough (perspective all over the place!)... but they are meant to be done in a journal surrounded by text and not much time to do them:

Thanks man. About how long do these little sketches take you roughly? They look pretty neat; seems like the perfect way to capture a moment of your life.

thanks! :)

these are lovely.

another charles bargue plate study.

Thanks, and those are some amazing values. I need to get back into studying some more. Especially values.

Danke! Is this a pre-existing character or original work?

I got a commission done today

kelemcolfsa6sdt.jpg

And I did it in one day. Which I'm pretty happy with. "Speed paint" commissions are supposed to be done in a day for me but uh...I always struggle with that deadline. This one was particularly easy though because the commissioner is a good friend and I know exactly what they'd want so...not sure if I'd be able to do it again.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if I had to pull a number out of my ass I'd say about 5 to 6 hours?

I drew this skull a few days ago, I meant to post it here at the time but I got busy and ended up forgetting.

I'm really happy with how it turned out. I've never drawn anything beyond a handful of sketches here and there, but seeing it like this makes me want to take the hobby much more seriously. I've always wanted to draw something to use as an avatar, I guess this will do as good as anything, and maybe it will remind me to practice.

^ If you are wanting to take art more seriously studying is the way to get started!

+1 for giant cranium and sideburns >.<

Seriously though, it's always awesome going through old art and seeing how your style has developed over time as well as the concepts you feel best depict your characters. I think one thing that can't be avoided is over time, even when you believe you have this idea set in stone it will change gradually as you continue to develop the story. I find it always makes it more interesting to see in what ways a character changes over time. Good luck with your graphic novel. Are there any other characters or are you still early on in the story production?

I'm working on a printable poster that will be given away for a charity art raffle I'm holding (those who donate £8 get the printable file). The winner gets a free speed painting from myself of whatever they like. I'll be streaming this one today if anyone wants to stop by at any point and watch me really struggle and cry in real time.

I always wanted to do some Shadow of the Colossus fan art; and after looking at some references I really wanted to get away from the barely visible distant figure with tiny horseman somewhere in the front holding up his sword. I went with my favourite one first of all, and perhaps do some of my other faves down the line another day. I'm feeling a little ot of my depth as I barely draw giant monster types and do environmental work even less. And its basically a giant envrionmental monster.

.

There are a few characters far more along than others. Hopefully things kick more into gear now thatiI have a better work environment. Here's two that have evolved pretty consistently.

My current blog is http://WerdnaCreations.tumblr.com, it's a bit all over the place though.

Made this in probably 10 minutes, i have been trying to work more on the size of stuff and fitting it together.

Also what is you guys thoughts on drawing some ones else work. Like having there art up and drawing to get the same result, without tracing it?

I could see that being an OK practice as long as you were trying to incorporate something from their style into your own. For example, if you really get a kick out of how Ayami Kojima does her eyes or Luis Royos female proportions you could pour over their work and emulate their interpretations.

Ultimately as long as you learn HOW they make those style choices will benefit you the most. Same thing goes for researching pose angles off of stock photos.

If there's something you like always try to draw it. Bolstering your mental art rolodex is never a bad thing. Just remember to draw from life as well.

I drew today while drawing with my 3 year old..eh came out ok. I used to draw a lot as a kid and just don't do it much at all as an adult but would love to get into it more and ultimately get better at it.

I think it's a first time for me posting in this thread.

Here's a relatively quick piece I did today (I usually spend days polishing stuff, I need to get away from it). It took me about 3 hours while watching TV.
I just got my Surface Pro 4 last week, and have been configuring it as a Photoshop machine that I can draw / paint with on the go (or couch, bed, anywhere!). I think it's a very nice mobile art device.

She's a new character I just made up and mad about something, I don't know what. Maybe because she doesn't have a name yet?

Welcome to the thread!

Cross post with Art Self Study. Sketch for today.... Messed up the hands and stuff... still have long ways to go... Still can't do this digitally :(

You're lines certainly are looking cleaner and clearer already. Perhaps after you start to feel comfortable with your line weights and work you can go back into studying forms again. I wouldn't worry so much about what you can and can't do art with. At the moment I think you're just calibrating your brain to understand what the rules are generally. Once you feel more confident with what oyu know you'll be able to translate that through different tools. All my advice is, however, based off of my experience and my own opinions, so you will definitely have varying results and your own answers the further along you go.

Here's something I was cooking up last night while I was pondering over brush settings:
Any criticism would make my day. I'm thinking about reshading what I've done so far because it's still a bit flat.

I'm liking the variation of the brush strokes themselves; was there a particular look or "style" you are going for while trying to switch up your brushes?

People often call these "master studies". These are sort of catch 22's I find. It helps you to point out some techniques that seemed really ambiguous before and can be helpful; I mean we spend our whole lives copying others to learn. However you can and will learn the artists mistakes while you are at it. Personally I try to keep master studies to a minimum while working from life or photos (on the rare occasion that I actually do buckle down and study haha ʕ； •`ᴥ•´ʔ). I would not recommend master studies to learn anatomy though.

I did these 4 sketches today during the lunch break and a bit after work.
What I did was just go around Iceland on Google Street View, find a nice angle and paint it.

Lovely as usual, and a really great idea! I'm finally trying to get to grips with actually working on environments. Super frustrating though as I feel like I'm starting from square one.

Still stuck in that "I know I can do better but what is this shit" area. I've not tried to actually spend time seriously rendering fur, and I'm trying to take a shot at doing a background that's a bit more interesting than cloudy mist and mysterious leaves. I'm, dying over here. Commission work...and my pallet feels really off....all this green....

My stuff in the past has always been a bit too airbrushy for my taste. I also have a problem of never tightening up my work so it strays a bit on the blurry side.

I guess I'm looking for more of a textured stroke. I'm getting it where I want it, hopefully I'll post an update tomorrow night after fam time.

The other thing I'm needing to iron out is my process in general. I always get ahead of myself when it comes to shading and more often than not i get flat chunks with hard lines everywhere. As long as I force myself to block in color for the basic shapes and take my time getting it into focus I'll be set.

Edit- your wip sums up exactly what I should be aiming for as far as process goes.

edit: whoops, sorry about the double post

Do some reading on edge control imo. In general the texture of the brush (although capable of many benefits) won't decide the success of your image. You can do great things even with just a soft brush and hard edge brush, as long as you use compositional edges effectively

I very highly recommend reading this blog post on the subject by the great Greg Manchess: http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/2015/04/10-things-about-edges.html

Wow! That was a great read. It seems like that's a lot of what I am looking for. Thank you for that (^o^)

Anywho, here's the last marker piece I did a few weeks ago. I flubbed the background in concept but managed a half assed fisheye look that seems okay. I've never had much experience with fur either.

Servbot's link certainly does cover a lot of ground when it comes to actual brush work (the combination of hard and soft), and as he said there's really not much difference between each brush so long as you can make something soft and make something contrast with a sharp edge. I think you have the right idea with focusing on your lighting as well. I think combining new brush work with some focus on light will help push you in new directions. Also fur is quite dastardly. Good luck.

For now I'm taking the time to go through different brushes as I know what I want to do with them, I'm just trying to find the right tool for the jobs that I need done. Sure a pair of scissors can cut things but I ain't about to go mow a lawn with them either.

I feel I went too dark for the cast shadow on the wings. I was quite happy happy with it until I just looked at it again aha. Should be finishing this up tomorrow though.

Just got home about to turn right back around to go out, but I figured i'd post how far i've gotten. I was telling myself this was going to be a speed painting but that definitely didn't go as planned >.<

Cross post from Art Self Study. drawing for today...

Also, just passing along but Manga Studio is $15 right now... Artrage is $29 (Thanks Popstar for letting us know!) and there's a bunch of discounts around Craftsy, Proko ( BLACK25 ) and Amazon Books ( HOLIDAY30 ).

I AM FINALLY IN DRAWING MOOD AGAIN!!!

Maybe it's a seasonal thing. I seem to do it more in winter (then stop when february rolls around lol).

doodly comic

a mess of characters added one by one so it's a mess of perspectives too lol:

Must have been like 10-12 hours to complete.

I made a gif of it because it reminded me of a bad jrpg cast!

Here's another quick picture I painted with my new SP4 today, this time with Clip Studio Paint. First time using the watercolor tools, I had no idea what I was doing with them (the blending was funky) but it went okay I guess.

I also recorded a video of my process here if anyone's interested:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Ev6Q8pZqQ

It's a bit over 4 minutes with 16x speed, so it took about an hour total.

First time I recorded my work so I was super nervous and hasty, I forgot that I can cut all the breaks in editing so I didn't have any, lol.

Three more teapots, using the same linework. I think I like the second and fourth ones best.

I certainly like the first one. In fact I think I would like to have such a teapot in my home. It's hard for me to find ones in the colours I like so I never buy them... You're doing all the right things to study though. Keep going in the direction you're going!

I did finish this, just had no time to post it.

chimerafsx3yrk.jpg

As always it feels like there is so much more to be done! But I'll get there...Setting up a Patreon thingie soon. as well.

Mixing in a bit of imagination with the reference work, for this sword I used a reference to draw the shape, and made the details on the handle and hilt from imagination, similar to the teapots.

I always love watching people draw it always amazes me how they just know where everything goes and how they draw there lines.
I love plague of grips videos that he does where he shows his self drawing and talks about what he is doing.http://youtu.be/QxIx5XQZi_I

Hello, I'm new to this thread! I recently picked up a Surface Pro 4, and I'm sketching at lunchtimes most days. I need to get into a habit of trying more ambitious works, but I'm very out of practice with drawing. For now, I'm happy to get used to drawing with the tablet like this.

Here's something I sketched yesterday:

^ Nothing wrong with being too ambitious. If you find a picture is too overwhelming you can just drop it and move on to something else and come back to the idea when you're ready with the knowledge of knowing what you need to work on. If you stick with it then you have an awesome piece. You win either way. Welcome to the thread!

Sketch commission I finished today. The commissioner has these butterfly people they've made, they wanted me to make my interpretation of a male version.

iphiclidespodaliriusfm8rtl.jpg

I quite like the composition and the idea of semi transparent hair so I'll colour this one. Will give me the chance to work on recording speed paint video stuff for the Patreon reward razzle dazzle. About 3 hours.

hdMHFJY.jpg

I'm getting on a plane in a few hours, but here are some figure drawing 120 second studies from yesterday. I'm using quickposes at the moment, but if anyone has any other suggestions I'd be glad to give them a go. I like to prop up the iPad and use that as reference while I work on the Surface Pro 4.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Your paintings are wonderful and intimidating! :)
