NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

I've been wanting to participate in this thread for a while. Most of what I draw are comic pages, I don't draw too much aside from that. I just made this one, and am pretty happy with how it turned out, especially the second and third panels.

Decided to start doing this again. I've been doing a lot of drawing recently anyway so I figured why not.

Day 1

Did this in about 20ish minutes. Started with a pencil/graphite sketch, then went over it with texter and permanent marker (since I'm cheap like that). Then I just scanned it in. I still have absolutely no idea how to use texters even though I've been using them for about a month. I kinda like how it turned out vs. how much time spent on it. I just wish I was more careful with the gray texter around the hands though.

Finally kicked my own butt into finishing a couple of commissions/requests.. lol

FINALLY FINISHED THIS FIRE EMBLEM x DRAKENGARD 3 comic..

Probably 6 hours in total (and like.. 6 months of procrastination!). But I probably won't do anymore comics for commissions because they are starting to take way too long, even if it's crappy and simple like this!

My friend actually asked me to edit a picture to make it look more like her and her fiancee for wedding invites, but I figured I'd have to do it from scratch anyway..
EDIT: But then the original artist found out and got mad that I even did it instead of my friend I dunno.. paying her, so I can't be showing it no mores lol.
Original that I referenced from: https://41.media.tumblr.com/eda2e7e6d1ee742fe6f29e4c7b9a3a79/tumblr_nnlvh9yEO91tb3rvdo2_1280.jpg
~ 1 hour.

Once I am out of commission procrastination hell, I am sure I'll be arting a lot more freely. XD

So, a sixty second sketch turned into my first attempt ever at oil painting. I didn't really know what I was doing, so I just ran with it.

(EDIT: I fiddled around with it some more)

Day 2

Tried my hand at drawing some Disgaea characters (since I really love Takehito Harada's artstyle/character designs)

Link (somewhat NSFW. Am posting in a link since it might be inconsiderate to post it in large considering one of the character's outfits)

Turned out horribly. I procrastinated too much before starting on this and just ended up rushing this out. Gunslinger turned out okay but Salvatore turned out awful. I think probably because I didn't do enough prep work and because of her relatively complicated uniform (which I honestly wasn't paying much attention to until I finally started going over it in texter)

Well at least I learned today that 1) I really shouldn't procrastinate and 2) I shouldn't skimp on doing proper preparation beforehand

Day 3

Decided on more fan art, since I find myself usually being sloppy if it's not (probably because I feel like I have to match certain standards if it's not my own original work).

Did a pencil sketch, went over in pen and then I scanned it in and printed out a copy to add colour with.

After yesterday, I gave myself a lot of time with this one. It worked a bit. I'm really happy how the lineart turned out. The colouring part ended up being very sloppy however. I'd chalk it up to my lack of experience in using more than 1/2 colours. I tried not to use marker as an outline again but the colours didn't look so great by themselves so I felt like I had to add them to cope

Sign one I actually started in February and have been working on it on and off. It was based on a guy holding a religious sign by the 7 train here in NYC. It feels like I can add more to it but I've been stuck as to what to add.

very cool. almost vertigo inducing.

Decided to start doing some figure drawing every day for an hour over the summer so I can loosen up my art style and be more expressive. This is day 1 & 2, I did like 30 in each hour but these are the ones that (barely) aren't just aimless scribbles. All of them were done in ~2 minutes. I'm pretty shit at figure drawing right now, but I think I'll get better with practice.

I've not been able to paint for a long while (not properly anyway), so I'm trying to get back into things. I feel incredibly rusty. But at least I'm finally able to work on commissions again. Which always has been, and probably always will be, nearly naked dudes.

Standing around. In strange lighting circumstances.

I have a lot to catch up in the thread! It's awesome to see all the new people posting!

very cool. almost vertigo inducing.

Coming from you, that means a lot to me so thanks man! I'm gonna properly scan it eventually so it looks good. By the way, I hope you're still producing those cerebral, geometric minimalistic figures!

Don't really have anything in the way of original stuff since many digital paintings I started but haven't finished. Have been looking at the Digital Cookie video series which I'll share in the Art Fundamentals thread that a friend recommended me.

That being said, I just started reading This One Summer yesterday and fell in love with the art work so much that I replicated one of the panels on page 29 to get a feel for Jillian Tamaki's process when she drew it. All credit goes to her. In this panel, the main character Rose looks at a couple making out through a gummy foot.

Suffice to say I learned a few things from it when replicating it. Simple, bold lines, and a three color scheme (monochromatic colors in this case; black, gray, and white) create a fantastic composition that manages to look three dimensional because of the gray shadow tone. In what must have taken her anywhere from 20-60 minutes to draw, took me several hours on and off with corrections being made.

It reminds me of how Michael Cho uses a three color scheme in Shoplifter (black, pink, and white; another great read by the way) to create expressive characters and a vibrant environment. It goes to show that keeping it simple can create strong compositions but I digress.

Been a long while since I posted here, because I've been focusing on improving and felt that posting here was somewhat detrimental for me as I wasn't 'good' enough for warm up drawings or quickies, resulting in me spending too much time on bad drawings just to maintain a quota for the day.
Now that I have a much better grasp on color and have 'found myself' in terms of understanding the best conditions/ hours for my art and what I enjoy drawing, I'll try to work my way back into here.

That Hotline Miami documentary got me inspired good. Each one was one layer where I just let myself experiment with color and expression to that gdlk music.
