NeoGaf OLED owners thread

A close friend has a C9 some time now , and it burned in as a motherfucker, he is quite pissed, and that for a 3200 euro tv, even his plasma has less. And it burned in much fast than his Panasonic Plasma. He told me next time he will get a much cheaper tv and just buy a new one earlier.

I have seen it on his set and it's nasty.

So be warned, with gaming and huds and tv channel logos.

DUDE this is what im considering-i currently have a c7 and wanting c9 from the vrr gsync stuff. What other upgrades have you noticed? How is HDR in game mode?
 
Ok. The 4 biggest upgrades of the C9 over the C7 for me are...


Jusf FYI, I follow the settings on rtings.com but I increase colour to 60 instead of 50 and colour temperature at Warm 1 instead of warm 2. (That would be around W14 in colour temperature)

1) When I used my C7. I noticed that game mode makes the graphics kinda dull for both HDR and SDR games.

But for my C9, it isn't affected at all. It looks as good on game mode as in ISF dark room mode.


2) SDR game mode is no longer locked to wide colour gamut!!! This is a big one for me as colour gamut in sdr game mode on the C7 is forced to wide mode. You can now set it on Auto and colours look natural and beautiful now!

3) 21 ms input lag on the C7 vs 13 ms input lag on the C9 is very noticeable!! Controls feels much more responsive.

4) Picture quality is really nicer! And Peak brightness is definitely higher than on the C7.


I got it at a really great price and it was a steal. I'm just so fucking happy now.

I had 65" C7 for a couple years - and I have to be honest that it's the best TV I've owned so far.
I don't feel any reason for upgrading at all as far as picture quality goes, nor the size. From where I sit, it's plenty big enough for whatever I do... but I do consider burn in as a possible issue down the road. I don't see any burn in for now - I don't normally watch any TV on it - mostly movies & netflix, along with gaming. I'd say all evenly around 33% time - although I don't have enough time to really watch anything LOL..

I agree on the Warm 1 instead of Warm 2. Warm 1 just looked better to my eyes and kept it there.

I also highly recommend setting the Dynamic Tone Mapping to On, it makes a world of difference. Only rtings.com seems to be the one site that recommends it be off. Everyone else recommends on. I went back and forth and keeping it on was a no brainer.

Oh yes. I set Dynamic Tone mapping to On as well.

For SDR. I also set the OLED at 90. Regardless of whether I'm watching in darkness or with ambient light. I like it bright!

I'll probably upgrade every 3 years and hand down my existing oleds to my parents or sister. Or whoever needs one!

Omg perfect! So glad I went with the upgrade. Can't wait for monday.

Can you say something about potentially improved motion interpolation in movies compared to the C7?

I never use motion interpolation. I always turn off TruMotion and all that. You WILL love your Monday!! The C9 is freaking amazing!

My Sony HT-z9f sound bar arrives on Monday so I have something to look forward too as well!

Adding on a 5th major point

5) HDR game mode on the C7 was dim as fuck. HDR game mode on the C9 is PERFECTION!!!!! Especially with dynamic tone mapping enabled!

How you deal with the stutter when playing 30 fps games without any form of TruMotion? You just tolerate/get used to it? 0o

Yes I always had it off too. But it's supposed to be a bit better on the C9 so I was wondering if you tested it.

Here it is again:
Keep motion interpolation off at all times for gaming.
I recommend setting it to Clear for movies, youtube, etc. As it does help quite a bit with the stutter.

It increases it but I don't know it LG offers TruMotion for game mode like Samsung offers Motion Plus does for game mode, if LG does I would assume it just adds a little bit of delay in game mode like with Samsung.

Yes, it introduces input lag.
Under no circumstances should TruMotion ever be used for gaming.
Not only does it introduce significant input lag, it also introduces artifacts that are very distracting and very noticeable. While it can give an appearance of 60fps, it's still going to be 30 fps. It's not worth it.
Samsung is the only company that offers motion interpolation in a way that doesn't drastically increase input lag. I haven't seen it in action, and since I refuse to buy Samsung TVs I likely never will.

I don't know what to say to Ulysses 31 Ulysses 31 in regards to stuttering, other than that the vast majority of games are at 30fps and the LG handles it as a well as can be. If you're bother by 30fps then maybe console gaming isn't for you.

I don't love 30fps gaming, but I am fine with it and just try to not worry about it.

I actually would recommend the Clear setting for TruMotion on movies/netflix/youtube etc. OLED has an almost instantaneous pixel response time and one of the downsides of this is that can cause a noticeable stutter in films that are shot 24fps (almost every film uses this). The Clear setting drastically minimizes the stutter in a way that doesn't introduce the Soap Opera Effect. Clear still very much has a film feel.
 
For games, I'd rather have less input lag than using TruMotion. Anyway the games I play tend to be competitive pvp games that run at a consistent 60 fps.

Tekken, Street Fighter, Soulcalibur, King of fighters.

Even for my single player games, I'd rather deal with 30 fps than input lag. Dynamic contrast and all the bells and whistles are always off for me. Controls must always be silky smooth and responsive for me.

Dynamic Contrast doesn't usually introduce noticeable input lag. If you keep games on Game mode, almost every setting that can cause input lag is not useable.

Samsung's solution fixes it greatly without introducing soap opera effect and adding a tiny bit of delay.

I actually like dynamic contrast on Low for Netflix/TV/YouTube. I flip flop between low and off for Dolby Vision content on Netflix.


Same for SDR content. Sometimes I prefer it on low. What do you think?

I put it on cinema home during the day time. And cinema mode during night time with lights all off.

You do what works best for you. I guess I've trained myself to get used to it and ignore it. 30 fps isn't going anywhere anytime soon and it's been here for ages.

As I said, if you can't do that then console game probably isn't for you.

I typically keep DC off, except for non-Dolby Vision HDR. For DV, I keep it on Cinema Home. No changes.

Besides added input lag, motions look extremely unnatural to my eyes. Even more so in games where you control the action. If it works for you thats great.

ALso in regards to stutter, is it something that most people notice/pay attention to during normal playing conditions? I'd say no.
Stutter is obvious when you are creating conditions specifically designed to show it off. For example, in the Witcher 3, stutter is very very very obvious when scrolling along the in game map, and when you are looking around the screen in God of War 3. But when it comes time to fight monsters, is it noticeable? Perhaps if you're really really looking for it, but for the most part, I'd say no. Like you said, most gamers probably wouldn't prefer 30fps if a higher option is available, but given how many games utilize it, it's say to say it isn't a deal breaker.

In regards to MI, I have a very hard time believing that most wouldn't notice fake frames being inserted leading to all sorts of artifacing. I tested my C9 with TruMotion on and off and in all instances it created weird effects especially in areas with heavy movement. In the Witcher 3 yes, the map scrolling looked smoother, but it created a weird water like effect on the bottom of the screen and caused weird haloing/artifacts/posteurization. It does the same in other areas of high movement, particularly where Geralt was moving.

To be fair, I have not seen Samsungs implementation of it, I'm not inclined to believe it's anything breathtaking since I have not seen it highly praised or talked about.
 
I have the OLED55C7P and I've been running into some issues with HDR and color banding. I was playing Sekiro when I first really noticed it. I changed my Windows color settings back to default from the 422 10 bit I had them at and it seemed to fix it, but I'm wondering what else I could be doing better now. I use it as a monitor, so should I keep it on PC mode or would Game mode give better visuals. Stuff like that.

I'd personally use Game Mode, but Chroma subsampling is weird on PC and I believe PC very strongly prefers RGB, which is limited to 8-bit color.

Do you use Wide Colour Gamut for HDR gaming?

I like wide colour gamut for HDR gaming and always enable it. Its sdr that looks better with Auto instead of wide colour gamut.


I'm confused though. I thought one of the main features of HDR is wide colour gamut but I see most people disabling WCG for HDR gaming and for non dolby vision HDR content.
 
I'm waiting for the 77 C9 to drop to around 3k hopefully. Almost jumped on it for 3700 on ebay BF, but I just got a 65 C8 a few months ago, so it can wait.
 
Picked up my C9 about a week and a half ago. Upgraded from my old B6. It's beautiful.

120hz gaming on the PC with the fantastic input lag is phenomenal.

The sound on the C9 is quite surprising as well, coming from my B6 which was bland to say the least sound wise, the Dolby Atmos works surprisingly well after you have done the room calibration, I looked behind me quite a few times to hear where sounds where coming from. I will still use my amp and speakers for the most part but the internal speakers actually do a very good job.

Whats the difference between qled vs oled. Most ive seen is oled is thinner and qled are brighter with not as good blacks. Anything else?

So how serious is the permanent burn-in issue for the C7, C8, or C9?

- OLEDs are susceptible to image retention and burn-in.
- OLEDs have glossier surfaces.
+ OLEDs have better view angles.

My wife scoffed when I told her how much I was dropping on a 65" C7 two years ago. Now we have two and she's the one who can't shut up about how amazing the picture is. As for the burn-in, I'm pretty sure it was worse on the 6 series because I've got about 3k and 6k hours on our C7's with about 1/3 of that time being gaming, and neither tv has any burn-in whatsoever. I do take as much care to prevent it though. I reduce the opacity of HUD elements when I can, have the screen-shift feature enabled on the TV, vary the content greatly, don't watch much cable or channels with a logo or a ticker, etc.
