NeoGAF will always respect women/racial minorities/lgbt

NeoGAF is definitely not that place anymore. It only seemed that way because all the shitheels defending Evilore and attacking women and minorities right now were too cowardly to let their ideas speak for themselves.

All the people who made gaf worthwhile will move on. The industry veterans and insiders will never post here again. It's over and it's entirely Evilore's doing.

The thing that I liked most about this place was it was unapologetically progressive. And fuck off if you were hating on minorities, sexes, religions etc.

I understand that some people think that moderation was bad, but heres my thing, the internet has Reddit, 4chan and other dark and horrible places where you get to spout racist mysogynistic shit for the lulz fam. There are places where there are a number of robust and documented ways to sort out doxxing and groups will setup properly structured pile ons where they will go after people with the swiftness.

Gaf was a little oasis in all that. A place where you could talk video games and other subjects without fear that if there was someone having a meltdown they would be escorted from the building.

I like the fact that they follow the same rules on Gaf that we would at a Pub, civil discourse that eventually leads to reasoned banter that is approprioate becausxe everyone is in on the joke.

The Evilore thing seems like there was just a series of people who were chomping at the bit to be anti SJW/Pro Gamergate and whilst they loved the intelligence and discourse they couldn't stand the fact that people who said things that they agreed with were getting banned, as it made them feel like their opinions were not welcome.

And reasoned debate is not something that is lacking here, having someone turn around and tell you your opinion is not well founded and comes from a place of unconcious bias should afford you the chance for self reflection.

So please make sure that you crack down on abusers and people who are trying to reduce a conversation down to "my shitty viewpoint is different to your reasoned argument and is therefore still valid".

We don't need gaf to be anything other than Gaf, with some very small tweaks but really, lets keep protections for minority groups as this is one place on the internet that we can all have a chat about things that we love and we know that it is strictly protected.

What I mean is saying shit to sound good and not really doing anything but trying to look like a moral superior to someone. It's a way to communicate with like-minded individuals that you are disassociating with someone or something and it comes off cultish IMO. It's nauseating.

Mods thought this scandal was 100% real, or at least thought for sure it would be perceived as 100% real, so they got out ahead of any action by Tyler to preemptively look like such great people, such bastions of humanity because they are morally against rape. Everyone is against rape, get over yourself.

The biggest issue was how those with opinions that didn’t go with the majority were treated even when posting in a reasonable manner.

Was quite easily the biggest issue in both the OT and Gaming.
 
Not talking about the issues is just as worse, if not worst than actively being against it. You're willingly being complicit in the former. The status quo before the civil rights era and today's LGBT rights fight were for minorities and LGBT folks to stay quiet and know their place.

Agreed. GAFs moderation was unquie, even if it generated a couple of false positives here and there (moderating 190,000 people will do that). It was a place where PoC, queer folk and other minorities could feel safe (at least compared to other forums), and bigotry wasn't tolerated full stop. There's now a giant hole where GAF use to sit, it will be interesting to see what fills it, hell maybe GAF will fill it again.

Closing down LGBT, PoC and mental health off topic communities (that literally saved lives) might be one of the worst things to happen out of all this

I literally do not know what you mean by a gamergator. I ignored all of those threads for over a year until I finally felt compelled to see what it was all about, had a laugh, and never gave it another care.

What you are doing is labeling me with a buzzword that has a greater context to like-minded individuals so that they know how to perceive me and how to interpret my words.

Completely agree. I've always enjoyed talking about games on Gaf, but anything off-topic or even remotely polictical was something to avoid.

This forum swings too far left for its own good if you ask me. I'm a remainer whose only ever voted for Labour, but some of the abuse I've seen some people suffer because of their more conservative views is scandalous.

I've seen people get dog-piled and attacked to an extreme I'm not comfortable with.

I came on Gaf the day after Brexit and found myself defending people who voted to leave because the torrent of anger they were being subjected too.

Like you say, this 'many against one' mentality rears its head on the gaming side from time to time, but I felt the off-topic section had generally become pretty toxic unless you agreed with the concensous.

And this comes from someone who generally agreed with this consenous.

I was a bit nervous about coming back if everyone was gone.

On topic. NEOGAF did have a problem. Only a specific set of views were tolerated. I've always thought of myself as very left wing, but reading the witch hunts threads made me feel like I was some sort of alt right arsehole (exaggeration). I decided to avoid any politically charged threads, but I'm glad I no longer have to.

I will miss being able to talk about gaming issues that were political in nature, hopefully that will be okay or at least become okay on the future.

I did not understand the new rules this way. I guess you are still free to post "representation in games" threads. In fact, I do not think that political discussions were a big problem at GAF, e.g. the German and Austrian federal election threads were civil and varied. What was problematic was a partially mod-supported mob-mentality with certain issues, where whole teams were antagonised for (alleged) misbehaviour of single team members and the very broad definition of bannable positions on anything that has to do with gender topics. Often, even lack of understanding was construed as hateful behaviour, which is creating a very tense atmosphere.

For now it probably is best to keep Off Topic closed for a while until the dust settles, because there are still a lot of people who want to make their disgust for NeoGAF known and probably also a strong influx of people with very questionable agendas as well, so it is good to contain the discussion a bit to the core topcis, but I hope that the banned topics can be opened for discussion later on.

Also, even though I had my fair share of issues with moderation (I think I was banned three times?), I want to still say they did a good job overall, especially in purely game based topics. I'd also like to highlight Cyan, who was very responsive and reasonable when any issues arose.

Well, 1. I'm not accusing you specifically of being a GG person, just that you seem inordinately pleased about a ban of political and social issues being discussed on gaf

I've been here a long time, and I was a lurker for a few years too. The entire essence of the site got soul-sucked by a selection of mods and users who drove off a lot of the cool and interesting people because they didn't necessarily have 100% agreement on every possible moral quandary.

The whole time I've been here the site has had a primarily left-slant and it was never an issue until it was infested with rigid identity politics a few years ago. I've already expressed this but Gaf just got more and more insular and it finally exploded when the owner became the next target of the agenda driven contingent of the userbase. It's a classic case of "the left eating itself" I mean, it's textbook.

We don't need to make pariahs of people that disagree with us on political issues, it's counterproductive. Rational people can be debated, they can carry a discussion. At the end of the day, it's okay to disagree. Some of the most interesting people I've met have zany views on particular things, it's okay.

Should I qualify myself by saying I'm left leaning? Nah, no one's gonna accept me at my word. Ask me about guns. Ask me about abortion. Ask me about who I voted for. Nah. Just throw buzzwords at me, it's easier.
