I always wonder why people feel entitled to being able to do X on site Y. There are plenty other options for that. It's not like you have to stay here. I for one am glad that political and religious threads are not possible anymore. Hell, OT was great when I joined but over the years it just turned into a toxic minefield. I look forward to the coming months and hopefully it will turn back to it's glory days where people treated each other with respect instead of shitting on each other and turning post 180 degrees around just to get into an argument.

The "echo chamber" comments are always hilarious. People who type that have never been in a real internet echo chamber of either the left or right variety. There was a genuine diversity of opinions even in the predominantly left-leaning community of Off-Topic users.
The website being based in the US is going to reflect the nature of US politics, in which conservative views are aligned with bigotry and deliberate ignorance. Plenty of international conservatives, moderates, libertarians, etc. posted in Off-Topic because their social views were not abhorrent. People who were genuinely willing to learn framed their posts as inquiries or open discussion instead of baiting or shit-posting.
My views have been challenged plenty without my rights as a racial minority questioned.

If you don't want to discuss politics, then don't, but the idea of outright banning any "political" talk is so odd to me, every single part of your life is governed by politics and it applies to your world views and the media you consume, video games included. The perception someone has of something can vary depending on their political view - see the recent "non-controversy" about killing Nazis in a Wolfenstein game.
Looking for equality in the industry (and extend that further) isn't political anyway. It's social, nothing to do with politics, unless you make it political.

I been Jr'ed going on 5 years for making threads about 4K gaming on a gaming site with no explanation of what I did wrong. And got banned twice because other people brought up my post about fp16 even in a thread that was about fp16 & in the end we got 4K games this generation & PS4 Pro is 8.4TF fp16.

Also in my 4 or 5 years here spent primarily in OT I really don't recognize this picture people keep painting. As long as you weren't shitposting or just really obviously using misdirecting language to state legitimately invalid opinions you were fine. If you got a backlash from multiple posters, so what? Doesn't mean you have to run away with tail tucked, just acknowledge a bunch of people on the internet really vehemently disagreed with you, maybe think about why that was, see if your own argument could be improved.

I saw a post in a thread about your favorite LGBT characters in games where somebody said it was "shoving a political opinion down their throat". That person should be banned on any forum.

GAF was one of the only gaming related places I know of where casual bigotry was not accepted, where i didn't have to see homophobia or racism on a daily basis.

Nope. People who think like a nazi or white supremacist should not have a platform. They want to kill anyone who isn't them. They're fucking disgusting and don't deserve a platform.
There wasn't much discourse or discussion past everyone agreeing with one another or piling on the minority who disagree with them. This goes past discussions regarding gender equality, LGBT issues, or race/ethnicity issues. In my mind there is usually only one valid side for things like those (ex. gay people should be able to marry, women deserve equal pay, blacks shouldn't be fucking murdered by police)
But there are things that aren't so clear cut and because of how similar everyone's views were on this site there was no real discussion for those specific things.
