What did you find boring about TPAB? I know that is not your type of music based on your lists so I am curious as to what you thought.

Doesn't he post like all metal lists, expand them horizons already. I don't understand the Grimes love, I mean it's fun, but kinda grating in spots too.

I don't know if it's really a fair assessment to say my lists are all metal. I mean yeah there's a good amount of metal in there, but I do listen to quite a lot of shit. It's not like I don't listen to all the shit that ends up on a lot of these lists. Last year I listened in full to about 120 albums. My favorite genres usually do end up being progressive rock, metal, and post rock, but I listen to a lot of indie, pop, electronic, and sometimes some hip hop/rap. Some of it ends up hidden below my top 20, though. That's where CHURCHES ended up this year (didn't like it nearly as much as their first album, unfortunately), and Sufjan Stevens ended up just outside it this year, too (great album, I just felt it was so zeroed in on one mood that I felt it a bit hard to listen to most of the time). Hell, one year Lady Gaga got pretty damned high on my list.

As for Kendrick's album, I want to get more into modern rap, because in the past I really loved it. Dre, Jay-7, Coolio, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, etc. Part of my problem with Kendrick's album is part of my problem with a lot of rap albums it seems. Interlude tracks that just fucking suck. I really don't want to hear someone repeating "This dick ain't free" over and over. It's just so ridiculously stupid that it's hard to take anything else seriously. I had that same problem with Dre's albums and Eminem does the same shit. I think part of the difference is that I feel like I listened to Dre and Eminem for fun so I was never really taking their shit "seriously" to begin with.

Other than that problem, which would be a pretty small one in the grand scheme of things if I got into the rest of it, I'm not terribly much a fan of Kendrick's voice. It's so subdued and unemotional. It doesn't manage to be either fun or serious. There's also not a lot of dynamics in it either, it seems. That criticism transfers to the music, too. There's not a lot of dynamics. Seems a lot of the tracks just have this kind of boring jazzy sounding 70s porno soundtrack backing track and it doesn't really go anywhere. The sounds used on the choruses just grate on me, too. There aren't any hooks that I really latch onto, and there definitely aren't any moments in the songs where I'm like "That right there. Goosebumps." I do get a lot of spots though where I'm like "That there. What the fuck was he thinking?"

Boo at churches(inoffensive entry synthpop with a vocalist who can't project), grimes(went from interesting pop to boring pop) and tame impala(worst album of theirs imo) making the top 10 although I didn't even vote lol

Was courtney's album really that we'll received? I enjoyed it but didn't realize do many people considered it a top 5 of the year

edit: where's beach house you Gaf fucks :/

They released 2 albums and both were great smh

I totally agreed with your first points and then you ask about Beach House who've been making the same album the past four albums.

Arca too low.
Clarence Clarity too low (though I'm pretty sure my placement of it at #1 got it on the list))
Neon Indian too low.
Floating Points too low.
No Colin Stetson.
No Everything Everything.
No Pusha T.
Drones ranked higher than Arca and Clarence Clarity.

Faith in humanity is dead.

List is pretty nice, with a good variety as far as things go. I can understand why K. Dot is so high up on the list, though I disagree with the idea that his album is flawless. I see it as having a lot of narrative inconsistencies, worse storytelling, and a production style that I don't enjoy as much as other people did.

I don't know how you define "diverse" but this is the nature of aggregate lists...more popular and critically acclaimed media will always show up at the top. I posted earlier how this list is almost a mirror of Metacritic's aggregate of critic Top 10 lists. It's the same with GAF's GOTY lists. By definition, lesser known media will not show up.

Increase the sample size of voters, and the list likely becomes less diverse, not more

Nah, hipsters generally like to show off their music tastes, thus this list. Metalhead's, jazzers, Pop-GAF, prog-rockers, etc. generally keep to their own groups and mostly stayed away from voting.

Up the irons , Iron Maidens BOS is their best work in years.

Interesting to see the taste of music on this forum.

I'm pathetically out of step on new music. I think Art Angels, In Colour and the new Decemberists record might be the only 2015 albums I listened to (or at least remember listening to).

Anyone else kinda fell off with that Jamie xx album? I remember enjoying it on my first listen but I never really went back to any of the tracks other than Gosh, Seesaw and Good Times.

I don't listen to it as much, but I still play those tracks along with Loud Places & Obvs. It's pretty relaxing for me at times.

Obvs, Hold Tight, and The Rest is Noise are the best songs.
Ignoring Gosh.

?"

Maybe try cunninlynguists, dark time sunshine, open mike eagle, and milo?

Tru, I'm just biased though as chillwave and dream pop are my go-to genres. I do think Depression Cherry is a much stronger album than TYLS though, sad to see it lower.

Also when I posted that I was exhausted and though Beach House was missing entirely from the list oops.

As someone that doesn't really listen to new music anymore, my most anticipated album this year was from Modest Mouse. Although I liked the single (Lampshades on Fire) the rest of the album was kind of a disappointment.

Started listening to Art Angels recently and it blew me away. First Grimes album I've listened to and I'm interested in checking out more of her stuff. Glad to see it at #2.

Fast pacing and fragmentary delivery show how Mutant’s tracks operate as experiments in obsessive dysmorphia, taking flaws and magnifying them to scale drama, affect, and beauty out of digital refuse. Exhilarating moments are found next to tracks that only feature impact tail-ends, panned and swirled around a headspace to suspend spatiality further.

That's the point.
That may have been the point of the album, that's exactly what I didn't like about it.

Forgot to vote this year, but no mention of Wolf Alice's debut album is a real bummer. For shame. Easily my favorite of the year.

Wasn't a big year for new stuff for me personally, but I branched out a bit. Though I don't listen often I do like TPAB, got really into Currents and found myself enjoying CHURCHES' new album quite a bit as well. Will check out a few of the albums listed here when I get the chance.

Most underwhelming album of the year for me is Drones by Muse, which I was looking forward to but was ultimately disappointed in. That being said, Reapers and The Globalist are two of the best songs they've done in a really long time.

Lan Dong Mik

And why would I want them?
I usually disagree with the #1 choice in these threads, but I absolutely love TPAB, so I can't hate this year. No it's not my AOTY, which btw was Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss. But goddamn, TPAB is such a slick ass album with great lyrics, but my favorite thing about it is how unique the beats and music are. It's got this old school, dark sounding, but at the same time uplifting musical theme through out the entire thing. It's honestly one of my favorite rap albums of all time.

Glad to see Kendrick at number 1, that album has already become a personal favourite of mine.

Disappointed Vince Staples Summertime 06 didn't make the top 10. It's an incredible album, with dark atmospheric beats underlying his brilliant lyricism. He takes such a nuanced look at gang culture and being black in modern America, he has a really unique perspective on things. His flow is undeniable too. I can understand some people thinking there's too many filler tracks, but personally it was one of the few albums this year I could put on and listen to start to finish without skipping. I thought it was really easy to just get lost in. Summertime, Lift Me Up and Norf Norf are all some of my favourite tracks this year from any artist.
