NeoGAF's best of iOS

Flipboard is the coolest app I used in years. I can't believe it's free. The amount of content they give out is staggering and I love how you can browse basically every interesting magazine inside one app.

i like tweetbot a lot for a few reasons, though the official one is the best free one.

Okay I am using Tweetbot now. I like it but I have one question:
Let's say I'm looking at a reply to an earlier tweet, how can I either see the earlier tweet, or the entire conversation?

I just tried it, and I don't see it. Also, ad at the top? Back to Tweetbot...

Well I paid for the full version.

I like how you can just easily click on links or usernames in the timeline view, no double clicking or clicking through to another screen and then doing it. I've tried most the big Twitter apps people recommend and always just found them slightly annoying to use. I've been using this for years though so I imagine there's just a familiarity to it.

Feedly for iPhone is the best free RSS reader imo.
Just checked this out, and damn, what a great app. Reeder doesn't come close imo

I'm also a huge fan of Tweetbot, best iPhone app by far, from my experience.

Will update the OP tommorrow when I'm back on my PC, sorry for the poor updates/format - I'm rubbish but I had only good intentions!

From the last page, alarm clock pro looks great, thanks chuck. Still tempted to put sleepcycle as the number one choice though since its so unique to anything someone may already have in their house as an alarm. Any thoughts?

Also: SoundHound or Shazam?

Do any of these RSS apps have push notifications at all? Now that I don't have lock info I want to get some notifications of new stories.

Why is Feedly better than Reeder?

Really, Beejive? I have never used it but it's $10 and has a 3/5 average rating.

That's what everyone said was the best when I was looking for an IM app. Everyone said it was well worth the money. I haven't heard of anything since then that was better so I figured it was still the best. Everyone swore by it like they do Reeder. Also it looks like the reviews are based off a change that people don't realize is a setting now.

From my experience it isn't.

Yeah Echofon for Twitter. Have been using it for years (Twiterfon) and keep trying the others but they're just not as well laid out.

Hipstamatic is slow but slaughters Instragram if you want beautiful retro photos. Its filters are 1000x better.

I think Goodreader is the best app on my devices by far. It's so handy to copy over an audiobook or podcast to listen to on the go. If you copy, say, a book and keep it in one folder, it will play through the folder without needing to have the screen on or select the next file.
Common knowledge, I'm sure but it may be news to somebody.
I blame Goodreader for the fact that it's been ages since I last synced my devices.

For streaming audio, I use PocketTunes. Maybe it's part nostalgia from my palm days but I love it. I will record streaming audio overnight on wifi and listen to the recording when I'm out and about, saving me from being in the top 5% of 3G users. I'll also use Wunderradio from time to time. It's more a fall-back for me though.

All this talk about TuneIn: I may have to pick it up and try it. To those that may know both, is there a difference making another audio app worth it?

For internet browsing I use atomic web browser. You can import your bookmarks (I know from safari but I'd imagine you can from others as well). It works great and the full screen in landscape makes it worthwhile. While in fullscreen you can have translucent buttons of your choosing at the bottom of the page, which I use for common browser commands. Combined with bookmarks, I very seldom have to leave fullscreen (which you can do with 3-finger swipe up or down). Also, I've found communication with the developer to be both pleasant and productive. A couple of suggestions I made when the app was first released were incorporated into an update rather quickly.

Those three apps are probably 90% of my daily iphone, ipod, ipad experience.

Goodreader sounds incredibly useful when you use it like that. thanks Sye. It was already in the OP, but you've really opened me up to the possibility of using it too.

As for Twitter, Echofon (terrible name) got over taken by the official (free) twitter app some time ago, and that itself is easily beaten by Tweetbot, so I'd give one those a look depending on your budget.

Would be very interested it the Reeder users gave Feedly a try too tbh.

I think the most important feature that Echofon has over the other clients is the syncing. I read tweets on my Mac, iPad and iPhone. So having the timelines synced, so I don't have to read the same tweet twice, and that it automatically starts where I left off on the other devices, makes it much easier to stay up to date on the twitterverse.

Calvetica is my favorite calendar app but I'm not sure if it's supported anymore.

After their latest release, they shifted over to another calendar app - http://itunes.apple.com/dk/app/fast-calendar-tasks-calvetica/id385862462?l=da&mt=8

Which they are supporting the hell out of.

imo > Beejive IMO. It's so hard to recommend Beejive when there's something out there that is not only better, but also completely free! http://lifehacker.com/5802977/the-best-instant-messaging-application-for-iphone

And thanks for the Atomic Browser recommendation, once I'd changed the theme a little I was really quite impressed. Got it set to two finger swipe up/down = top/bottom of the page, and two finger swipe back/forward = next/previous page. Neat. Love that it's so easy to kick into full screen mode too. Could see this replacing Safari for me...

Thanks, will check those out asap (AwesomeNote is a great shout for best note app btw) and add some into the OP (which incidentally has been updated, would welcome any feedback and change/recommendation updates)

Well for one, it's totally free, and integrated into the website very nicely as well as of course your google feeds. The way it presents itself is very nice and organized, on-par with Reeder imo, for free.

Nice to hear you like it, btw does tweetbot have a free version?

Also, everyone who is offline at times and needs information access, you must try Wiki Offline, it's awesome. Works totally without internet and has a pretty big catalog of wiki pages.

Definitely helped me out in certain pinches. Oh and if you're in to info-graphics, download Infographics. :D

There's a really good PDF viewer/editor app out there that I can't remember the name of. All that I can recall is that it's like 20 bucks and that PDF is nowhere in its title. :p

Nice one, thanks - have updated the OP with links to both versions now (to be honest, since I'm in the UK I often have to guess the US prices, they don't easily convert due to VAT etc)

And I don't think Tweetbot has a free version unfortunately, but if you use Twitter enough to justify the cost then check out the reviews and see if it's for you: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/id428851691?mt=8

Wiki app sounds interesting, must be a huge download though!

It's not too difficult - removing the 'gb' from the URL will give you the US link.

could you provide a link to that? A search in the AppStore throws up Wiki Offline and WikiOffline (and All of Wikipedia and WikiBot and Wiki Mobile and so on). Pretty expensive apps too.

Ah nice one, thanks! I'll do that :)

And let us know if you find a link KAC, but GoodReader is a lot cheaper and incredibly well reviewed to be honest, so that may edge it anyway.

If you're in any kind of education at all I can't recommend iStudiez Pro enough for a combined calendar/timetable/assignment tracker. It takes a while to set up but once you do you won't want to live without it

Oh and there's a free version that has all the features but some limits on how many classes it can store I think

Have to say after using Atombrowser, and absolutely loving some of the features (easy full screen, gestures to go to the top/bottom of pages etc) the new 'Reader' feature in Safari makes any other browser really hard to recommend unfortunately.

They should feel good that their dream and tool has reached masses they never could alone. Or, you know, go bankrupt and call it a day.

RSS - Pulse News, I prefer my news to be visual so it trounces every other rss feeder.

IM - Beejive by a mile, a bit pricey but so well worth it.

Just had to post about Crush the Castle, a great Angry Birds type game in a medieval setting. Angry Brids actually ripped their concept, which is a bit lacklustre but makes up for fantastic, addictive gaming. The HD version on the iPad is damn near perfect. Try out the free version in the App Store.

I dunno. Ask Marco if/when that ever happens.

The "Reading List" and "Reader" features in Safari are not the same thing as Instapaper. Reading List is basically bookmark sync among various devices. Reader is reformatting the page to focus on the content. Neither one allows you to save articles for offline reading, which is the killer use case for Instapaper.
