Yeah theres a lot of uncalled-for shit directed at female cosplayers, no doubt about that.
But you can't deny that "geek chic" has been commercialized to hell, and that always brings lots of moochers looking for a free meal ticket.
When I was a kid I remember the son of some neighbors who was really into oldschool rap. I remember the guy because sometimes he was really pissed off at how commercial rap and hiphop had become. Rap goes back to the seventies but nobody cared back then because rap DIDN'T MAKE ANY MONEY. The moment it did, boom! every nobody was a rapper.
Now is the same with geek culture, somebody saw there was money to be made and started this trend we see now. My problem is that it devalues our culture, it brings all these poseurs who only care about what they can get from this. They don't participate, they don't contribute, in fact most of them just steal and copy whatever is trending right now.
Some of these cosplaying girls are very passionate about this stuff, but many others are model school rejects, the girls who didn't make it to the runway so they go to wherever it seems theres a lower bar. It was the same with hiphop, you have truckloads of total hacks who can't even remix a song right, fake gangstas living in whiteyville with a stock portfolio.
When you have a girl cosplaying as slave Leia and you can't find anything from her except a model mayhem profile then my guess is shes not a geek.
