For this weekend only: 10/30-11/1:
Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories
yqtaXJe.jpg

Generally, the Goal of the "Let's Watch Anime" thread is to bring together the anime community (even "casuals") to watch a lesser known anime series to discuss and share our reactions towards it at the same time. Participation in each episode is appreciated, but playing “catch-up” by watching multiple episodes is normal as everyone has different responsibilities/time to watch anime. Just don’t post on future episodes unspoilered! The more posting about the series and it's events, the more beneficial it is to everyone, so please post up on the good, the bad and the awful; We are all in this together! (no hiding lurkers) We will have a new show selected to watch every two/three weeks and the genre will vary greatly.

However, this weekend is a special edition to celebrate the Halloween season and will only be up for Fri-Sun. The next Let’s watch OT#6 will be posted on Monday.

Synopsis/Plot*:
Akin to TV Tokyo's Folktales from Japan, Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories takes a narrative format to explore the rich occult history from Japan. Moreover, the storytelling techniques in this brand new series will mimic kamishibai—a traditional storytelling technique inspired by the artistic usage of paper figures and scrolls.

Yamishibai is a picture-story style of animation whose motif is surrounded and based off rumors and urban legends throughout the history of Japan.

*Required ToS Footnote and reminder*
Please see the warning on page 1 of the current seasonal Anime community OT, that still applies here. It's simple; Don't talk about it or promote it...

look at GAF-chan’s words of advice from the community thread:

Mod Note:
This has been happening frequently enough lately that I just wanted to throw out a friendly reminder: solicitation, discussion, and linking of pirated material is prohibited. This includes illegal streams, torrents, aggregators, fansub & sub group discussion, links to websites containing entire anime soundtrack albums magically for free, etc. Use common sense here. Discussion of legal, ethical, and economic implications of piracy is okay.

Basically, the section on piracy & copyrighted material in the Terms of Service applies to anime as well.

*thank you to BGBW for the banner work*

Cool I'm in. Can probably just binge it all right now. Still need to watch like 18 eps of Blast of Tempest too.

Also for Halloween I should finish watching the Ghost Stories dub lol.

Anyone that checks this out and enjoys it should really follow it up with the currently airing Kagewani. Same director and same visual style, however each is much more refined.

How has Kagewani been anyway?

I'm going to dig into this in a little bit.

Are you watching only the first season ? 2nd season is worse but still has some highlights worth watching.

And in case someone is as dumb as me; when you go to the linked Crunchyroll page of this show it's the second season that is the visible one. The first one is under the tab below.

Both seasons are open, I just focused on S1. You can watch both in a couple hours.

Ep.1: Talisman lady, wtf..boo!
Ep.2: Zanbai... something is lost in translation
Ep.3: laughing clown faces cause laughter...
Ep.4: fuck that printer!!!

The animation is creepy itself, lol.

It features the worlds most incompetent detective.

I'm kinda mixed on it, I guess it mostly depends on whether or not you like the artstyle.

Banba's a weird character and I'm not sure the overarching plot was a good idea. He might've been better as a Rod Serling type since the individual events are good enough on their own.

Episode 1

Perhaps he should've asked the landlord about the history of the house before dismantling so many talismans?

Episode 2

Perhaps zanbai is just a ritual to ease the man's passing to the next life? Should've stayed in the hospital. Poor cab driver.

Episode 3

WHY SO SERIOUS SON?

Episode 4

OK, that got me. I know something's coming but I wasn't expecting the hair owner behind the copier since it was back against the wall.

Heh wow, alot of the shorts were pretty good, with quite some scary ones.XD Oh man that umbrella goddess for one, even through the noise she makes is funny as hell.

Episode 5

Japanese work ethics reared its ugly head again. Also he should've taken the stairs.

Episode 6

Welp. Never mind paid leave, I'll be looking for a new job if I'm hallucinating that bad.

Episode 7

Ah so that's where the banner in the OP came from.

Episode 8

Essentially, the kid's fucked either way. These things never ends with a happy ending.

Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories all in one

1 - I was surprised by that woman popping up in that guy's room, but I found it funny how he was able to just get her arrested. Anyway, couldn't he just ask someone about the talismans? Is that vocaloid in the ending credits?

2 - Oh, this isn't the same guy? I'm noticing that there isn't a lot of just asking the creepy people what they're doing. Those old guys sure were jerks, cursing him for no apparent reason.

3 - So, why not explain this to the son?

4 - Now this is a woman who should have called the police. I was dreading the inevitable jump scare, but it was actually pretty weak.

5 - This gave me a Twilight Zone feel, though without any real moral.

6 - Japanese culture is really big on not putting up a fuss, huh? I would have expected at least a, "Woah, what the hell is that?!" Eh story.

7 - Another "call the police" story. And no peepholes in doors?

8 - What an idiot. He didn't even think twice about opening the door for his friend.

9 - Really weak story.

10 - Toilet ghosts really stink.

11 - That shot at the end was pretty creepy.

12 - That girl should really just tell those kids that their games suck. I did like the twist of her becoming another shadow.

13 - Was that a live action guy doing the funky dancing at the end?

Wasn't really a fan of this. I generally don't watch horror, but comparing it to The Twilight Zone, I prefer when these stories have a point, whether it be a moral, some commentary, or character development. I'm not saying that this is an invalid form of storytelling, just that it's not my taste.

Also watched it all in one sitting. Seen the first three before, decided I didn't like the show, guess we'll see how it goes this time around.

1 - Ah, yes, the classic creepy woman staring at you schtick. Nice jump scare eh. Look at him tear off all those talismans. That's what you get!

2 - Show just loves creepy people staring creepily. ZANBAIIIIIII

3 - This is the one I quit on the first time I watched it. Look at their goofy faces, laughing all night long. Soooo spooky. |:

4 - First new one here we go. Gotta have a late night creepy school episode. Oh it's a creepy white face dark eye girl. In the scanner. So creepy.

5 - lol dad just got owned by mom. Nice B4 and B13 what's next B666, c'mon. Creepy mannequin! Not even a ghost. Whoops dad got tricked. Owned. AGAIN!

6 - This guy's really upset about other people being not being upset! But wait what's that. Nobody else sees it. And now the train stopped! Lights out! And it's back. Okay.

7 - Oh, classic haunted hospital. Okay. Oh okay. This is sorta interesting. Which one's the cursed one? Both, of course. Sooooo spooky!

8 - SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

9 - Honey, you're in a lot of pain because your great great great great great grandfather punched a dude in the face. Now I take you to this old woman who'll steal that grudge for herself. Just kidding! You're dead.

10 - Wait how do you fall INTO a toilet. You'd think the hole just wouldn't be big enough to allow that?? Totally unrealistic 0/10.

11 - I always like the idea of living footage that does spooky shit. Too bad I'm so caught up in laughing at this show to be legitimately creeped out.

12 - Oh, that ol' shadow-friend game. I feel like the kids are creepier than the shadow, hah.

13 - This is why I don't dance! Who knows what could happen to the people who see it!

All things considered, only really entertaining when I stop pretending it's supposed to be scary and start treating it as a joke. Worth the short amount of time it took, maybe.

---

And you know what I'm kinda bored. I'll watch the second season, too. I'll go ahead and spoiler mark it just in case someone for some reason decides they want to watch it.

1 - Ah, ventriloquism. A classic. Hahaha that was pretty good Much more funny than scary, probably intended.

2 - Hah the googly eyes on the sink monster, oh man. It's adorable! Also that girl sure did get really mad over some spaghetti. How do you go from friend to not friend in thirty seconds flat over spaghetti. Chill out, girl!

3 - Russian nesting dolls? Dang. Those things are as anti-creepy as you can get. Let's see how it goes down. Um. It. Okay? Weird, I s'pose.

4 - Yo creepy guy stop staring at the pretty girl. Yo I warned you but you didn't listen and now you're gonna turn into some weird long-limbed demon creature like that girl. Ya dope.

5 - Creepy doll, please help me actualize my love! By turning him into a cube of meat~~~~

6 - Another shadow friend!!

7 - Sometimes a old dude gotta get some toys. And a lost eraser and a pocket-sized dog and long-lost friend. This story was actually a good one!

8 - C'mon dude can't even think of one secret, just do it. Haha what. Dead dude got more mad about a dog than his wife having an affair?!

9 - Huh, I liked this one, too. More weird than spooky. Ominie-san sure does look gross!

10 - A man slowly driven insane by a noisy fly. I feel his pain. ):

11 - Man what kinda tool would submit a novel he didn't write to a 3m yen contest. Ya deserve what ya get, bro. Skeletons were quite humorous.

12 - Lady just give back the earrings geez.

13 - You guys got punked, letting them lead the ghost baby right to your house!

So did they take the first couple seconds of the theme of White Fatalis from Monster Hunter heh? That was bugging the heck out of me when that sound effect came up quite a few times in the series.

Episode 9

Not only the exorcism failed, it sort of backfired with a stronger grip. Sins of the fathers are no joke.

Episode 10

Just how big is the hole in the japanese toilets that you can actually fit a kid in there?

Episode 11

That one was rather creepy. Although I knew it was going transfer outside the TV somehow.

Episode 12

Moral of the story: don't make promises you can't keep.

Episode 13

The other dude got the right idea going to cram school. A little longer and he'll probably be doing the rain dance as well.
