NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

...wait what?
They fly in from the direction you are facing, not based on fixed generation patterns (e.g. triggered by crossing a tile). So for certain scenarios, you have to make sure you are facing a certain way so they come in from the direction that is easier to manage for that scenario. You can't memorise sections, you have to directly manipulate enemies into patterns that suit you.

I literally never do that and can get to Dracula consistently without continuing, usually without losing a life. If that's like a speed runner trick, cool. But it's certainly not required to get through anything.

I always find the first form really straightforward with just the whip/ It's all about timing your jump over the fireballs. Too early and he'll redirect them upwards diagonal, too late and they'll hit you. Rule of thumb is, the second he opens his cape, jump.

Yea I find his first form to be not bad at all with just the whip. For me, the only reason I use holy water during that phase is because I need to kill enough fireballs to get the double/triple shot to make sure I can lock down phase 2 form. Once I get triple, I just jump/whip. According to Sir Ilpalazzo you can still lock him down without double shot, but I have personally never been able to do it successfully, and I tried a lot back when I was still using boomerang for phase 1, so it isn't worth trying to do when its so easy to get the double shot anyway.

Honestly, for me the worst thing about Dracula is his spawning. Like when you are running to the left and he spawns like a pixel away from you in the direction you are moving, and you end up in his model when he spawns. Is there a way to predict where he will spawn or do you just need good reflexes/solid luck to not take damage from a bad spawn?

Definitely just reflexes. You have more space one side and you need to head that way immediately. He used to always hit me this way too

Bucky o Hare is...awesome so far, I liked the varied characters and stages along with the challenge, though Blue Planet can be ridiculous, lol. I like the bosses as well. Game seems to have a lot of 1 ups as well.

I can't take a pic of my copy due to an error on my SD card.

I'm so glad you're having fun with it. It's truly a fantastic game. Keep posting impressions :)

Yeah, I like Bucky quite a bit, but didn't manage to finish it... I beat the first four stages, but not all the ones after that. I should go back and play the game again. :) It's great that it has passwords, way too many NES games have no saving!

You can also whip the three fireballs in one go if you jump toward him and whip on the way down, not too difficult to get the timing right.

Hey guys, here's something that I found to be slightly odd. Today I was playing Super Mario Bros. on my front loader NES (I bought the system this past weekend), when I noticed something that I don't recall ever seeing before in the game. Faint outlines around every pit in the game. (kinda looks like an invisible pipe) I reset the system, clean the game, but those lines are still there.

Has anyone else experience this before? (I doubt it matters, but the cart I have is the 3in1: Super Mario Bros. - Duck Hunt - World Class Track Meet)

It's a composite signal. Weird artifacts like that in spots where you have a high contrast between a very dark solid patch of pixels (the right side of the brick) and a very bright solid patch of pixels (the blue sky of the pit) are par for the course.

Oh well, I guess there's no way around it.

I have two NESs, a front loader & a top loader, and I would like to keep them in their original conditions if possible. (Well, not counting that I did disabled the 10NES chip) If I ever do run across another cheap NES, then I would definitely be interested in modding it.

As for an RGB display, I’m assuming you mean an older CRT with RGB inputs? If so, that’s something else I hope to find out in the wild for a cheap price. It hasn’t been that long since I found a Sony Trinitron TV for 99 cents. But, it only has two composites & an S-video input. I still think it has a great picture though.

If you want RGB (aka the best possible picture) from an NES or Famicom, it must be modded. That's regardless of the display you're using.

How much does it usually cost to get an NES RGB modded? Been toying with the idea but I'm really green to the process.

I'm also in the consideration stage. I don't even have my NES hooked up! I have no room to put my CRT and no Framemiester to make composite look acceptable on my plasma TV. I think the going rate is about $150, though.

I have a 20" CRT on my nightstand in my bedroom and it's alright there. I do appreciate the classic feeling of gaming on a tiny screen on my bed. But I'd love to hook a second system up to my plasma for sure, if only to play my Famitracker tunes through my PowerPak on the big sound system. I could do that now, but let's be honest, I also wanna play games on it lol

Anyone on the fence about the RGB mod. Get off asap. It looks seriously incredible

It's probably an inevitability honestly.

And for what it's worth, the RGB mod also adds S-Video support, which in and of itself is still going to be a damn sight better than composite.

And since these two things are being mentioned back-to-back, I will add that BLW should not impede on the space needed for RGB mod/board. I asked that a while back and Baph said it shouldn't be an issue. BLW + RGB + Framemeister + your preferred controller = one really cool setup.

Team crt 4 lyfe bro. But yeah agreed, that'd be a cracking set up

I didn't know that. At least I won't have to worry about looking for another TV, if/when I do the RGB mod. I'm still planning on waiting to find another cheap NES before I do any kind of modding. That way if I messed up during the process, I still have a NES to fall back on.

Watched the vid - really good stuff. Nice context about other games in the NES library, the dev and publisher and the JP games. I don't watch a lot of retro YT reviews. I can't stand how most people who do them feed the need to play some amped up character who thinks the word "fuck" is really funny. I do like My Life in Gaming, though.

Wireless BT adapters incoming. Hope it's not laggy!

Yeesh does that guy really play games with his pointer fingers like that? Looks incredibly uncomfortable! Anyway, cool idea, but I would probably only use it if the bluetooth transmitter was such that you could plug in official controllers, not just using already bluetooth controllers like in the video, I'm too attached to original hardware.

I have a few bucks left on my eshop account on my 3ds. Considering gargoyles quest 2, shadow of the ninja, and street fighter 2010. Which one should I go for?
