NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I have a few bucks left on my eshop account on my 3ds. Considering gargoyles quest 2, shadow of the ninja, and street fighter 2010. Which one should I go for?

all are good, but all have flaws......lets see, street fighter is quite punishing yet satisfying, shadow of the ninja is solid but I'd prefer to play it coop with someone else, and gargoyle has solid gliding platforming, but the rpg elements aren't for everyone.

I'd say gargoyle, but that's just me.

It might just be the 80s child thing, but damn, Goonies II, it's scrappy, sprawling and and confusing for kids, but such a cool adventure that totally matches the spirit of the movie.

Look at all the adventuring!

I finished it as a kid making my own maps.

Playing it through now with a guide = 8-bit nostalgia adventure bliss.

Just got back from another retro convention. Bought some games of course.

And one just for kicks, after watching James & Mike (and others) play this p.o.s. so many times I just had to try it for myself.

I played it through not too long ago with my brother using a guide. That game is so confusing. Kudos for beating it as a kid. I remember using a code that took me right to the end of the game back then.

Does anyone here ever replace the back half of a cartridge with a better one? Often times you'll find carts going for a little less on eBay if they've got stickers/marker on the back or if the rear label is ripped. There are only a handful of rear label types, with most carts being the 1985 original. So long as they match in terms of wear and color (which only varies if there's fading) I would think you could never really tell the difference.

I've done it several times with SNES games, haven't gotten an NES cart with a bad back yet, but I definitely would for that too. You can use this knowledge to your advantage to get some good deals, I found a copy of Super Mario Kart with a huge crack in the back plastic for $3, and just swapped the back with the one from my random collection of SNES sports games that came with the system I bought, good as new. Also had a few SNES games where the back got nasty and brown, so I had to swap backs.

This got me interested.

I just got out the callipers and measured the size of and distance between all Nintendo 8-bit buttons.

All buttons are more or less identical in size. less than 0.1mm difference.

Dogbone buttons are less than 0.5mm further apart than NES/Famicom (NES and Fami share the same PCB so are identical).

Game Boy buttons are less than 0.5mm closer together than NES/Famicom.

There's really almost nothing in it.

Design-wise, dogbone buttons rise a bit higher and are on a raised section, GB buttons are slightly recessed. Dogbone and Game Boy of course have convex buttons, GB ones are slightly less convex. Fami and NES concave.

Depending on finger size, that difference can be significant.

This photo brought back memories of using a jeweler's screwdriver to disassemble my NES pad and OG gameboy and swap the buttons. My first hardware mod! (and this was before the dogbone existed).

After waiting for a freaking month for the final game to arrive from Japan, I can now say my mini-collection is complete!

And the product code just gets me!

Cosmic Epsilon is really cool, I enjoyed playing that one. Falsion is on my list of games to review at some point.

I'm a few days late but I'd go with either Gargoyle's Quest 2 or Shadow of the Ninja. Both are superb games.

Honestly, the darker colors of Wii U VC doesn't bother me that much.

It really bothers some. But not me.

It's a nice and legal to play older games at a decent price.

Wii VC NES games are fairly dark too, right? They don't have the horrible blur filter, at least.

That's my main issue. I hate the blur.

Here's the game running on my Wii U:

Here is the same camera taking a picture of my actual RGB'd AV Famicom, at the same distance.

Both are running through my XRGB Mini, though the Wii U is on the HDMI pass-through and the actual NES is running in RGB upscaled.

My bro just got an NES Advantage...however it seems to have problems with buttons not responding too well when pressed.

Maybe someone can help me, a coworker gave me her NES to see if I was able to make it work again, it has the famous red blinking light.

I have the console completely dissasembled with no connector and still has the same issue, I've cleaned everything I can in the board but I'm still getting the blinking red led :(

God I don't know. I just downloaded it and HOLY GOD MY EYES.

NINTENDO, HOW CAN YOU NOT EMULATE A CRISP IMAGE FROM AN NES GAME?!

THANK YOU NINTENDO, THANK YOU FOR THE NICE THING BUT OH MY GOD MY EYES

Yeah I know...its not as bad if you arent just looking at the gamepad...but after being used to NES on a CRT...even just through composite. I can make due, but it is annoying.

Would I rather have a translated famicom cart and be playing with a nes pad on a crt? Of course...but i've never played the game before and it'll help so i'll bite lol.

I do have a flash cart for my NES, so it's kinda like I just donated Nintendo a couple bucks in order to play the rom on the flash cart :P I'd happily play on the Wii U if it were comparable, but it clearly isn't.

What a crying shame. It could be a great way to play based on the hardware. Just let me turn off the blur filter... and turn on scanlines, would be ideal...

Haha nice.

Holy crap I just thought I'd have a look at Die Hard on eBay, $200 boxed WTF?

It's not a great game but I had fun with it years ago. Sold almost all my PAL games, had no idea THAT would get so expensive!

Well guys, after over a week I beaten Bucky o Hare...and it was awesome, easily one of my fav games on the system. The music, the bosses, the stages, the harsh difficulty, the character swapping...I love it. This is a game I'm definitely doing a youtube playthrough on, using no continues of course. This game is better than the arcade game overall even though the arcade game represents the show a lot more.

Nice, glad you liked it! It's definitely a fun game. I love those platforms that move stupid fast until it's time to jump from one to the other. That's my favorite part.

Yes! Another fan of the Captain and his crew. Be sure to link us to your Youtube vids, I'd love to check them out.

Funny enough I don't think that part is hard but it's fun though.

I'm gonna be working on this playthrough for the next 2 weeks to die as few times as possible so I'll have it up in July, and no continues used and no overpowered Jenny ball attack BTW.
