NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Very nice stack of games dude. I'm working my way through collecting the Mega Man titles. Got up to 4 at the moment. Can't quite pull the trigger on 5 right now. Odd how expensive that one is

I only needed Bucky and MM 4,5 and 6 for my collection. The guy wanted to unload the lot so I saw a chance to get what I needed at a pretty good price after selling the others.

I put up a review of the Blinking Light Win for those that didn't back the Kickstarter. Short of it is that it works, but is just too damn good at holding the carts in place. I'm at a bit dismayed at the lack of comment from the Arcade Works team on the whole issue.

Sucks to hear, especially since, as you mentioned, the lack of a death grip was something they advertised with it.

I just got mine in as well. I can confirm that it does have a strong grip, although I wouldn't say its as bad as yours is. It takes a good bit of effort, but I don't feel like I'm damaging the carts pulling it out.

Picked up Abadox and Baseball Stars this past Saturday from a couple local places.

Can't wait to try Abadox going by how hard I've heard it is.

That's too bad about BLW. The ninja grip seems to be an issue with every single after market NES connector. I wonder why it's so difficult to match the OEM build after all this time?

You tell me if you beat the level that clearly has a vagina monster in the bottom center, while spooky ghosts come flying at you from holes near the top... Cause that's as far as I could get..

Yeah the more I read the more it seems there's a big variance on the units they sent out. Hopefully they refine their manufacturing/testing process because it is a neat product that aside. My hunch is they bit off more than they could chew.

Just yesterday I realize I was totally fed up with the death grip of the aftermarket 72 pin connector I installed a decade ago.

I wish I could put it in like butter, as it was originally back in the day. Supposed to be a "zero force insertion" mechanism :(

So regarding Famicom games. Living in Euroland, my NES collection is mostly PAL. I'm constantly on the fence on ordering an AV Famicom and starting to get some japanese titles, since I have no problems importing on my other systems (SNES, MD, Saturn). Is the color palette for AVF as washed as it seems from some of the pics? I can't do any modding myself so I'll have to use it as-is.

AV Fami is composite only, but as far as composite goes it's quite good. Colour bleedy, but that's composite.

I suppose there are adapters available that allow the use of US carts in the AV Famicom? Just in case I do pick it up and want to play US games at 60 hz without having to buy a third damn NES.

I don't know why third-party ZIF replacements are so hard to get carts out of, but it seems reasonable that the BLW's pin connector would be harder to get a cart out of than the bendy original "ZIF" design. The problem is, that very ZIF design which makes it easy to get carts out is probably also the thing which makes the things fail, yes? I mean, the bendy pins and such.

Famicom AV's composite is the cleanest I've seen besides Dreamcast's.

Also, cool avatar.

I've had all my NES stuff packed away for about a year as I was heavy into PSone games instead. Today, I packed up my PSone and set up the NES and SNES. I realized that I can't find my 1943 cart. No problem, it's a $5 game. I search on eBay... $20 minimum?

What the hell? Who is buying 1943 loose for $20?

Well, it's definitely better composite than anything else I've tried.

But I do want to get a little crazy.

That might be true but there's still a significant difference between composite and svideo on the PC engine. Maybe not NES/Master System difference, but still very significant.

Just a heads up, I'm going to list an RGB AV Famicom with red power LED in the B/S/T thread later today for $260 shipped.

Shit. And I just sunk a bunch of money into a lot so that I could get a few expensive games a bit cheaper.

Well, if it doesn't sell after a couple of weeks, I might be able to bite. Damn.

You can always hit me up. You provide the board and AV Famicom you could get one for $260 pretty easily. I finally got some of that peroxide cream D.lo recommended and it bleaches yellowed consoles super good.

Cool. I would love to be able to use your services. Gotta build my funds back up.

And speaking of sinking money into retro stuff - Jeremy Parish has ordered an Analog Nt and it's just shipped to him. I hope he provides some impressions on either US Gamer or Retronuats.

Whoa, what the fuck? It's actually real?

My plan is to have something about it (text/video) up July 6, barring shipping delays.

Very excited to see your thoughts on it! I don't think I could quite justify the cost, but I think it's super, duper awesome, and I trust your input on it quite a bit.

I'm pretty interested in knowing how much input lag it introduces. The price tag makes it an automatic no regardless, but I'm curious.

Yeah, it was painfully expensive, and I weighed the pros and cons for a long time (like... for six months, while I put aside a little cash for it each month). I intend to get a lot of use out of it for work and side project videos, so I felt like it made sense. But it's very much a case of "your mileage may vary."

Okay guys, I'm going to be moving in the next month or two, and I'm planning on slimming down the collection a tiny bit.

I consider myself more of a hands on collector, so I don't really need to have stuff that I won't really be playing much, so something I plan on doing soon is play ALL my famicom cartridges (600 something games) and separate the decent games from the unplayable.

But also, I've got a luxury item I don't really need to be sitting on, and I wondered what you guys think a fair price for the item is.

It's an RGB modded Red Twin Famicom (with worn box and styrofoam casing).

The Disk Drive needs typical repair or replacement (never bothered to) but other than that, it works like a charm. I've used it a couple times with a component converter since I don't have an RGB monitor, and even on component it's quite clear and looks great.. I think I'm just the type who actually feels added nostalgia to older, less clear displays. I just don't need it really.

The mod was done by a member of this community, but I don't know of his activity now.

Anyway, what do you guys suppose a fair price is for an RGB modded Twin Famicom that needs typical Disk Drive repair?

Ah, cool. Kinda forgot you were lurking around this thread, Toasty. Looking forward to your trusted opinion on this.

Also, I think we all know the pros and cons of a device like this vs the real McCoy with mods, upscaled etc. I'm sure Toasty does, too, so let's not devolve into arguments about policing other people's spending choices.

I have to hang out here sometimes — not enough action in the Game Boy thread. And where else could I go to be called "pure stupidity"? You can't get that kind of fresh take just anywhere on the Internet.

is it even shipped with the HDMI/upscaler cable? I was under the impression that it was still being worked on and would be available at a later date. iirc it only outputs composite/svideo/rgbs/audio through its proprietary AV-out.

Eh, we are mostly just slavishly devoted to original hardware around here. To the point of fetishization even. I think the Nt is interesting and even though I'm not likely to get one I'm sure some here might consider it. But only if it's truly top notch. We need solid reviewers who know their stuff to put it through its paces. There's going to be some jokers saying "it's great" even if it isn't, I'm sure.

My friend is using one of those adapters to play Famicom games on his NES, and I was wondering - do all Famicom games work on an adapter (albeit slower 'cos of 50hz) or might games like Castlevania 3 require the original hardware because they use special chips?

Some Famicom games don't work well with PAL consoles because of the 50hz output. I know for example Quinty just crashes when you start a world. And some games can have graphical glitches like Kid Dracula (still playable though) and Wai Wai World 2 (can't see half the screen) on PAL consoles. And yes games that use special sound chips like Castlevania III won't play the enhanced audio unless you modify the console and adapter.

On an NTSC NES every game will work fine, but the enhanced audio is still a problem.

Amazon has it for around $12

Still waiting for any kind of shipping update on my NT. I ordered it the morning it went up so you'd think it would have shipped to me pretty quickly once they started shipping.

I love my Analogue CMVS so I have faith that it'll be an excellent product, but I've been waiting for this thing forever now. My son wasn't even conceived when I ordered it and he's over 4 months old now.
