NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

If you compained about the video quality, Nintendo allowed you to send it back to them for one with an AV out. I remember a really old DP thread about how rare the NA toploaders with AV out are.

How did it sound? The FC version utilized additional sound channels not accessible in the PAL NES, right?

I think you are right, but I only played the PAL-version, so I wouldnt really now how the original sounds unfortunately. Sounded and played great in my mind anyways.

This reminds me that I have a Toploader I either should sell or get a nice RGB mod on, but every time I start doing research I feel completely lost and ends up postphoning it lol. Maybe this weekend is the time!

Hey i should be able to play Gargoyles quest 2 in japanese without much trouble? Or are there actual quests?

There's some exposition, and NPCs tell you where you should go next some times, but it's pretty straight forward and you can pretty much "fake it 'til you make it".

I didn't know the price disparity would be so large... looks like NES GQ2 is nearing Demon's Crest territory, shit. I don't blame you for going Famicom.

I dont know. Like I wrote in on of the other threads, I got GQ2 with 4 other decent games for just 26£ last week. Definitely not Demons Crest territory - or maybe I was just incredibly lucky.

Seems to be going for around $40-$50 on ebay for a cart. Edit: Actually I see one auction that ended at $60 recently. Damn.

GQ2 has been in the $40-50 range for at least a year... I'm actually annoyed it hasn't gained value like Mighty Final Fight, given both had equally low pressings and both are really good for their respective genres.

Please tell me you're joking.

I'm still waiting on my copy of Mario / Duck Hunt to skyrocket. It has to be at least 25+ years now since release and it still fetches only a few bucks. WTF! Because of this I've been thinking of selling off my entire collection. However I'm still trying to acquire clear plastic shells with the words RARE!!!! on it to ensure I gain massive money for everything. Since all caps and the more exclamation points used ensure top dollar or so I've heard.

The speculative market for retro gaming is utter BS and I hope it crashes and burns soon.

I saw a box for Little Samson, just the box mind you...no game nor manual, under glass at Too Many Games a few weeks ago for $300. The best part? It literally looked like it was used to line the bottom of a kitty litter box.

As someone who lived through the NES, Genesis and SNES era as a teen and adult it makes me sick seeing some of the prices of these games nowadays. Many of which aren't rare and were mass produced to hell and back and are currently being artificially inflated by dealers and clueless eBay sellers.

I'm not saying there aren't more obscure carts out there...but seeing even common stuff like Legend of Zelda, Contra and Castlevania command $25-30 in some cases, especially in loose and shit conditions, is ridiculous.

This stuff is getting out of hand and I pray for the market to flatline and fall out under itself. It ruins the fun.

I think that same box was at Midwest Gaming Classic for $300 last May, lol.

Hmm, I need a boxed copy of Probotector II, and ebay's gone stupid on it recently.

Any UK people here who know of other sites in UK/Europe that sell NES games? Or have a copy they will sell? I'll pay a lot.

Playing Ninja Gaiden 2 now, and I just realized how cool the scrolling on the second level (the train level) is. It even continues when you pause the game!

Edit: And the lightning in level 3 as well, holy shit!

Just beat Ninja Gaiden 2, which was in my opinion an amazing game, almost on par with the original. It also has probably the same kind of difficulty, which I like, and no "go back three-levels when you die on the last boss"-bullshit this time around. This was actually the first time I ever played it seriously, having never owned it back in the day (and only gone to the second level when I quickly tried it out before), and I think its a good sign that I managed to beat it in an afternoon although with some heavy preserverance.

So I think the control, power-ups and challenge was a bit better in this game, and the bosses was also better in my opinion. The level-design was also pretty creative with lots of new mechanics like the wind, ice and water which is nice for the variation, although I think none of those mechanics really worked that well. The music and graphics also was as amazing as ever, and while cheesy, you just gotta love that story with those amazing plot twists lol:

All in all, like I said, a great NES-game worthy of every collection imo.

This sucks...but due to limited space I really don't have room for my Commodore 1701 monitor to play the NES on these days. Basically if I could find a suitably sized console cabinet to match our family room I could have shoved it in there behind hidden doors to appease the wife. Lugging out and putting away the 1701 is quite frankly a total bitch to deal with whenever I want some NES time.

In any case, I haven't found much that will fit it within my budget cabinet wise that will fit where it needs to so I am considering taking the opposite approach and snagging a little flat screen and shoving it into my son's room since he needs a TV in there and this way we can both play it. I just want to play the dang thing, and since we moved into this new house in April it's been pretty much boxed up.

So the question is this - I have a toaster NES, my old original I got for Christmas in 1986, and I have always used the A/V outs. Does anyone have any recommendations of a nice 19-22'ish inch LCD I can hook it up to? I'm looking to spend under $160 or so but I want to get best image quality possible on one of these things.

Trust me...I know it isn't the best way to view it, but hey, I will take that over not playing the thing at all...

<3 NG2. I prefer it to the original to be honest, but in the interest of full disclosure, it's the one I played first.

Yeah, I think its better in almost every way, except for the level-gimmicks that doesnt work as well as they should have and adds quite a bit of frustration imo. Also, the music in the original is better imo, but that is surely down to me having played and loved that game for more than 20 years :) Definitely a better balanced game overall.

anyone know if $40 (shipped) is a good deal for a boxed NASA Super Converter (Famicom > NES)? was looking for something not too fancy but a bit better than using a Gyromite adapter. no idea what to expect price-wise though.

$40 sounds a bit much, but it seems that in general FC -> NES adapters are pretty expensive for some reason. Not sure what the shipping would be for you, but there's also this one from Krikzz for $25. No shell but you can put straps on it to pull out the cart with.

I refuse to believe this. How the hell do you "forget" you have 3 Little Samsons.

EDIT: What do you guys think about the Joycard Sansui SSS Controller?

That controller is really cool. It's basically the western-branded Hudson joycard for Famicom. It's more comfortable than the standard NES controller thanks to the rounded Famicom-like edges, offers rapid fire, and has a cool headphone jack you can use if you plug the audio lead from your NES into it. Recommended.

Finally had the time to sit down and play through Rescue Rangers. Been meaning to do this for a while, ever since I saw some speedrun streams of it a few weeks ago. Fun game, way easier than I was expecting.

How's Darkwing Duck? Worth playing through?

Darkwing Duck is pretty much like a Mega Man game with some added elements. Played it a lot when I was a kid. It was fun but I remember not being really good at it for some reason. Yet I was really good at Mega Man titles. The music is really good to.

most likely picked them up when they were cheap i remember thinking $40 was too much ugh wish i would of picked it up

The boxed NES collection on the new shelving.
Most were passed onto me from a cousin, but I'm interested in adding to it.

Maniac Mansion, Battletoads, Beetlejuice, and Monster Party were must haves for me, so I recently added those.

And here's the boxed famicom (and boxed gameboy) collection. Never went out of my way to get boxed, except for Gimmick and Bio Miracle Bokutte.
The rest just came that way on Amazon.jp

So my JPN HVC-101 NES turned up today, the pads are fairly yellowed......

igpOGDQN9CHsG.jpg

and the system itself is stained....

ibkSqtNYUOTcEs.jpg

I got some 35% strength Hydrogen Peroxide in preparation to hopefully restore the original colour....

I take it that if i add 1 litre of HP to 7 litres of water ill get a 5% HP mixture??

Will HP remove the stained areas on the system shell??

Look into making some retro bright, alot of the staining is probably nicotine.

Stains? No. I mean it might clean it too, but the peroxide is for bleaching.

That doesn't all look like yellowing, yellowing is usually fairly even. It kind of looks like mild burning.

Anyway, you'll need a glass tank or something if using liquid. I use hairdresser creme peroxide, can just slather it on, leave in the sun, looks like new in 4-8 hours.

So i stuck my dog bone pad in 10% Hydrogen Peroxide solution this morning before going to work (about 7:30am)......

It wasnt a 100% sunny day, was some cloud cover about but was rather hot 28c, and this was the result after about 10 hours outside....

Rather happy with the results!!

Loved it. Good music, great graphics.

It's very much like Mega Man as stated, but much easier...The different gun choices, the hook platforms that you hang from and the ability to block set it apart from Mega Man. It actually fits pretty well as a Protoman game.

The low difficulty would be my only complaint about that game, as I used to 1cc it with tons of lives remaining. Still, worth a play-through for sure.

One of my favorite NES games ever... though I could never beat the final series of battles. Congrats, the ending was considered legendary back in the day, I think an old EGM voted it their "best ending ever".

I did my dogbones and top-loader a couple of years ago and they ended up yellowing again after some time.

I guess I could do it again.

Why would that happen? Are you in a smoking household?
Or do these plastics just yellow when exposed to air in general?
I think it's just the second statement, the plastics they used back then were just crappy.

I have an SNES that looks like it's been sitting in the box in its original cellophane for twenty years, so it can be hit or miss, I guess different runs used different materials.

The lightning trick is great to cheat the platforming if you don't know the level very well.

got some filler games rocket ranger and ikari warriors 3 and had the seller of fire n ice cancel the order on me think he saw his mistake of selling the cart and manual for loose price oh well

on a side adventure i discovered these 8bit neca figures last week and proceeded to buy all of them all at once and preordered the next 2 coming out they are damn amazing

Thanks! That last series of battles was really irritating since you basically had to clear the whole last level for only one chance, and I think I completed that level almost 15 times before I was able to kill all three forms of the final boss, but at least I managed. And yeah, the ending was great :)

The lightning trick is great to cheat the platforming if you don't know the level very well.

Yeah I definitely used this, would have been way harder without.

I think you can get some UV protection spray paint, i might get some and try that.

Something like this....

or

Not sure if i should get a Matt or Gloss finish though......i think matt would look the better!?

Anyone know if the Hydrogen Peroxide would damage the PSU socket on the rear of the JPN HVC-101 NES, theres a plastic section on the rear that houses the multiout socket and the PSU socket, the multiout socket isnt attached but the PSU socket is and i would need to unsolder the 2 pins from the NES mainboard to remove it completely

But not use if i could submerge that into HP without damaging the metal contacts in the PSU socket...
