...I finally beaten Ninja Gaiden for the 1st time ever!!!
Congrats! I remember when my brother beat it first time. The last level is pretty brutal because you have to start all the way from the start when you die in the boss.

I myself haven't beaten the game yet. Last level but have not finished it.

congrats!
Thanks, this game got insane at the end, lol. I finally actually get to see the ending for the 1st time ever after all these years.

For the 3 final bosses, learn their patterns 1st, it's what I did after numerous tries. Jaquio took me the longest, but the 1st is easy as hell and the final wasn't the worst but not a total pushover, though it's best to hit it when those things aren't coming at you.

I have some things to say about Ninja Gaiden:

The hit detection is crappy, sometimes your sword goes through an enemy, and other times your sword doesn't even properly come out allowing a enemy to hit you. Lots of my deaths are caused by this. The hit detection on Jaquio is the worst as it can be random if you hit him or not, sometimes you can hit him from a distance, other times you can hit him at point blank and do no damage to him. I wish it didn't have that.

The enemy respawns are ridiculous. Some enemies endlessly spawn even after you killed them. Enemies can go away off screen through a glitch and then respawn again, lol.

6-2 is a nightmare. Most of my time was on that section, most other stages I don't do too bad on but that one can go fuck itself. The enemy spawns are out of control in that section.

The birds can also go fuck themselves as well. Those fast as hell high damaging pests annoy me to no end and it's worse when you are on a ladder. Jet pack ninjas are the 2nd worst.

I don't like the idea of going back to 6-1 when you die. Hell I reset the game each time that happens, no lie, lol. Fighting 3 final bosses with no health refills is insanity. My patience is already tested by 6-2 and Jaquio, why do I need to waste even more time on getting back to the boss only to possibly die again and start over from the beginning of the section. It's either do or die when you get to the 3 final bosses.

I had a hell of a good time playing it this week despite my frustration, I learned the stages and enemy patterns more so I could breeze through it more often as I got better at it. When I fought the 3 final bosses I defeated them all with no powerups. I would like to use fire on Jaquio but how I managed to beat him without a powerup is beyond me, lol. This has been a hell of a intense week for me since I'm learning how to play Ninja Gaiden more just like how I learned how to play the Shinobi games more last month.

I never saw the ending of this game until recently on my screen for the 1st time ever. The game beats my ass everyday this week until I learned to stop messing around and get serious to overcome the crap it gave me. I have played this game years ago but didn't get far until recently. Now I can do a recording in the future and go after them sequels!!! From what I hear about Ninja Gaiden 3, it sounds like I will rage even more than playing this, lol.

I've never had an issue with hit detection in Ninja Gaiden. In fact, the sword hit detection is so large, that you don't need to crouch to hit low enemies. This was "fixed" in Ninja Gaiden II, unfortunately.

I think Gaiden is a little overrated. The hitbox when you're jumping and attacking enemies are terrible. Gaiden 2 is a lot better, the hit detection is a little better and they cut down on the number of respawning enemies.

However, the best action/platformer Ninja game on the NES is easily Shadow of the Ninja.

Picked up some stuff at a retro gaming convention:

*sigh* I feel really stupid for asking this because I thought I read carefully, but when it comes to doing a NESRgb mod on an AV Fami, you can use the av port I see, but it says use a GC Scart? Is that EU SCART or JP21 Scart? I am considering having someone mod mine and I already have the SCART to Component adapter. Would I benefit?

It'll be the EU SCART cable, since JP21 isn't actually known as SCART (although lots of people keep saying JP21 SCART so it is getting a bit confusing). The GC EU SCART cable has the same wiring as an NTSC SNES SCART cable if that helps.

I'm certain that an RGB NES running via a SCART to Component adapter would be miles better than what it currently outputs (composite or RF, bleh).

This question is probably answered somewhere in this thread, but I just ordered a Twin Famicom and am wondering what I should do for an AC adapter. What should I use for an AC Adapter for it? It comes with an adapter (picture of what I'm supposed to be getting here http://imgur.com/PoDQLTp) but I'm under the impression that I'll need something different because of the voltage difference between Japan and the US.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Super pumped to finally be playing on an actual Famicom aside from using my old gutting Gyromite converter.

Famicom goodies came today.

Best $30 to spend. 7 foot cord is worth that. Plus it is sized up in every dimension. Plus turbo.

Bought one off eBay, came all covered in crap and doesn't work right. The seller said the sound stuff didn't work but the controller was functional but the down doesn't work right and the turbo switches do nothing.

Is it worth trying to buy another one?

Cotdam, Ninja Gaiden III is kicking my ass. Do I just suck now? The jungle level was a real struggle, lol. So satisfying :]

There is 1 nice looking and says tested from a US seller of gaming stuff for $29 on ebay

Japan sellers tend to ask about that much for untested controllers that are complete gambles.

It's the hardest in the trilogy so it's not you, it's the game.

Only having 5 continues makes it harder to practice levels. There was a time I could 1LC NG1...but when I was in practice it still took me 3 or 4 continues to get through NG3, and I certainly couldn't beat it now.

For the record, I try to play though NG1 at least once a year, it usually takes me 2 or 3 continues now. At this point I'm happy if I can still manage to one life rush the final 3 bosses.

That is my auction :) Fully tested and cleaned. They usually need to be opened and the contacts cleaned with alcohol. That is probably why the turbo switches are not working. That's a pretty easy fix, but I have not figured out the point of failure when they have a broken headphone amp.

Little Samson is 1k cart only now.

What. The. Fuck.

That has always been a game that I figured I would look into after I had already gotten other things I wanted to, and never really looked up the price. Welp, I guess I can safely say that that is never going to happen now.

It's actually a good game too. Not just a rare one for rarity sake.

Worth playing via non official means since it's basically abandonware at this point.

Should be on Virtual Console, but SE is dumb.

Yeah, I've actually played it and enjoyed it. Why I always thought I would eventually pick it up, but I don't think it's $1k good. Just hope that a few other games that I've been trying to get that are high priced don't go this route.

I paid $40 (or $50?) for mine back in um, 2006? I thought it was really expensive, but I really wanted it.

A friend of mine found one in the dollar bin of a Movie Trading Company a year or so before that (he sold his entire collection before it was worth much though).

$40 would have been relatively expensive back then. Prices went up considerably in 2007 and blew up in 2009.

Wow. I forgot that everyone called the controllers "paddles" back in ancient times.

Hmm, it might have been 2007, I just remember that I got it for a few bucks less than what was the going average at the time.

Pretty happy about it now, obviously.

Sigh, I nearly had that game too. Back in 2003 my friend and I were driving all around town to take advantage of Gamestop's B2G1 clearance stuff, and we went to this location that had Little Samson and Snow Bros. We did rock paper scissors and he ended up with it. I still haven't gotten any version of it, Samson or Lickle. On the bright side I still have Snow Bros.

I've been an NES collector on and off since the late 90s. I never even considered CIB games until around 2006 or so. I thought prices were nutty then. Sheesh. Wish I would have gone for a few more back then. Especially those black box games. I started collecting those loose back in my early days. I still don't even have all of those ....

What's funny to me is a lot of CIB games are really fairly affordable (by ebay standards anyway). I just got CIB copies of Bump N Jump, Skate or Die, Milon's Secret Castle and Space Shuttle Project for less than $80 shipped, so about $20 each. Not a steal, but decent for three good games and one less common oddity. $20 is about my limit on a good CIB game that's not one of the big, desirable classics or black box titles.

Excellent thread here. I take it there's a SNES/SFC one too?

Around a year and a half ago I lucked into falling into the world of the Famicom. I was on ebay and found this horribly listed game with a converter on it (and then a second in another by the same person.) Dark, not clear, very distant single shot stuff. I ended up paying $25 shipped between both and it ended up being Baby Mario (Bio Miracle Bokkute Upa and Super Mario Bros 2 FDS conversion called Golden Mario.) The cool thing was, both were attached to honeybees! Once I got that I was shocked, just a couple months earlier I bought another converter to play a couple of games, and all this snowballed into getting around 20 Famicom titles (I have 15 right now.) Much of what I do have is made by Konami though there are others like Armadillo, Macross, Splatter House, Samurai Pizza Cats, and so on. They're a lot of fun and quite unique and a shame they never came here. I was also very blown away having them run later on through the Retron 5 too with the HDMI and the other perks.

I used to have a fairly sizable collection of around 330 NES games but these days it's just north of 60 +famicom and I'm cool with it. I kept mostly what I enjoyed as a kid and then some gems I just can't let go of since like Bonk, Dragon Warrior IV, North & South, Duck Tales 2 (had DT1), RC Pro Am II and a couple others. The NES was just this system that was at the right place and time with the right open door policy internally to allow for so much expansion that put the system right on the cusp of what is acceptable going well into the future as the quality there on enough games still stands up which is hard to say nostalgia aside about the stuff older than it.

Of course ;)

My GF is a hair stylist so I will tell her to pick me up a little from his work, I'm going to try it with some of my yellowed SNES carts, some are insanely in bad state.

I just wish that some day I can see the sun, the weather has been awful this weeks...

You don't need burning sun, it works on a cloudy day, follow the url of the images for a blog post on the process.

Yeah you have to monitor full time on a hot day. Like re-apply a thin layer every 5 minutes. I've perfected it now in any conditions.

Yeh, the sun is really bad here so by the time I painted over a single system the part I had painted first was already dry. Cling film really helped though.

got some new FDS stuff in today!
i've been after bubble bobble for such a long time that it's hard to believe the hunt is over. after a non-absurdly priced copy, i mean, if i wanted to drop double what i paid there's ebay sellers ready to fleece me for it. there was a time where i didn't think i'd ever get ahold of this so it's really nice to finally scratch it off the hitlist. this nutty zip-bag has to be one of the weirdest packaging jobs for the system, second only to kiki kaikai.

(this is a much better port than kiki kaikai though)

akumajou dracula was more of a tag-along but i love cv1 like nobody's business so it's a nice pickup all the same. ironically i originally wanted this for the savefiles but in the time it took to finally get around to picking this up, i've played it enough to no longer need them. :U hey, unique file select music, though!

I’m hoping maybe someone can help me find a way to get one of my NES games working.
Recently my brother and I have gotten in the mood to clean (those that needed it) & play all of the NES games that we have in our collection. Our cleaning method was the classic use of Q-tips & rubbing alcohol. After 50 or so dirty Q-tips later, all our games ended up working perfectly, except for one. Which just happens to be one of my personal favorites, and that game is Castlevania. :(
I clean it multiple times with Q-tips & rubbing alcohol, tried cleaning the contacts with a white eraser, and even tried cleaning the contacts with WD-40. But no matter what, When I start the game (in a NES top loader, btw) I get this screen:

(Sometimes the background color changes, but it always have that same set of blocky mess.)

The only other solutions I’ve read that I haven’t tried yet is the use of Brasso (which I don’t have around the house), and soldering. With soldering, I have no clue on where to begin, or how to do it. Even though I do have an interest in learning how to solder. (I have a Sega Genesis model 2 that needs it power jack connection to be re-solder.)

Anyways, before I decide to take any such drastic measures, I wanted to take some pictures of the PCB in hopes that maybe somebody here can figure out what the issue may be with the board.

Here's a visible scratch, that is only noticeable in the right angle/light.

Does the contacts still seem too dirty to anyone, or does it look like their needs to be any kind of soldering? Or, is it possible for it to be just a dead ROM? :(

The contacts on your copy of Castlevania look clean, but the exposed area looks a bit short, as is the case with some games. Have you tried pulling the cart up a bit after inserting it all the way in? The contacts may have gone past the pins in the cartridge slot, leaving only contact with the covered area.
