NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Oh really? I was just going by eye on the pic. I still remember rolling the cords on my old NES controllers.

Never had dogbones though.

Yep, USA Dogbones are an almost acceptable length. The AV Famicom came with two, but the cords are the shortest of any Japanese system I've got. I measured, and even PC Engine cords have a good 6 inches on them. I've seen a lot of people say they have a CIB AV Famicom, but only have one.

They also have this backing:

The USA versions, of course, make no mention of the "Family Computer." They're labeled NES CONTROLLER Model No. NES-039.

By far one of my favorite controllers though. I adore these things.

USA Dogbone leads are basically identical in length to original NES and SNES controllers (give or take 1cm either way). Aka pretty much the longest leads of any controllers?

[AV Famicom] cords are the shortest of any Japanese system I've got.
They're exactly the same length as Super Famicom controllers. They're not the shortest leads either. Original Famicom, SG1000, SG1000 II, Mark III, Japanese Mega Drive (original and 6 button) all have shorter leads.

Japanese culture was to 'pull out' the console onto the floor and play white sitting close to it. Hence other features built around this, such as the pause button being on the actual console of the first three Sega systems.

By far one of my favorite controllers though. I adore these things.
I do love the dogbone as well. I've literally used one as my overall main NES/Fami controller for that last 21 years. It's not worn out at all either.

I have to say, I really love the dog bones, too. The slightly bigger d-pad is nice for me. I like the toaster console because I have zero nostalgia for the top loader (and I think NES games look weird standing straight up). My ideal console is an RGB modded toaster with Blinking Light Win and four dog bones with a Four Score.

I have a Joycard controller but haven't used it since my NES stuff is in storage.

Sweet merciful crap. You'd basically need to be squatting over the system to use anything with a shorter cord.

You have to remember it was the Family Computer. It's from 1983, and was designed to put on a desk or bench next to the TV you use as a monitor, like a Commodore 64.

Nintendo's first console was a pong clone, and like Pong the controllers are literally ON the console

And tiny Japanese apartments meant there was no 'laying back on the couch TV'. Kids sit on the floor to watch TV, and to play games.

Longer cords were not needed. And if they were, you could buy extensions (or 3rd party controllers in OG Fami's case).

The Saturn was the first Japanese console I know of to come with long controller cords.

Re-played Journey to Silius and beat it again. I now place it on number 10 on my personal top 10 best NES action games. Only problems I have with it is that most of the weapons are completely worthless. And the last level is a little too cheap. It's weird because the final two bosses are piss-easy.

Also re-played and beat Batman: Return of the Joker. Classic game. Silius and Return of the Joker are easily the best Run 'N Gunners on the NES aside from Contra and Super C.

I remember really not liking ROTJ. The weapons were dumb and some of the stages were annoying.

First stage of level 3 and last level are pretty annoying. But they're doable. The weapons are generally good but N is all you need. It's a pretty fair game. Like the first Batman they give you infinite continues and this time you have passwords; you can pause at any time to see the passwords, the passwords are only 4 characters, AND if you need to continue you start at the beginning of the stage you died on instead of starting completely over.

lol, so no reason to get upset over folks cannibalizing ROTJ for Gimmick reproductions?

I'm not saying the game isn't fun at all. It's just not as good as the original Sunsoft Batman, and if I had to pick, I'd take the first game every time. That said, I think there are other games that are more deserving of being cannibalized, but I'm sure there's a reason they pick RotJ (same cart or something?).

RotJ us the only thing you can make a Gimmick repro out of, save for a custom board or something.

I guess that makes sense. What do Gimmick repros go for anyway?

OCD Reproductions sells them for $45. You might be able to find it cheaper but his prices are pretty good for a website repro seller.

How does it sound from OCD? Without the extra sound channels intact, I don't see the point.

It's probably based on the European version, right? It will sound like the PAL one, with less instrumentation. I don't know if the repros are capable of the extra sound channels with modification to the system, though. I wouldn't think so.

Oh, sidenote: Timewalk Games did do a version that had the extra sound channels for a properly modded NES, but those are silly expensive now.

I'd settle for a famicom bootleg with proper channels at this point. As cool as the game looks.... it's not $300-level of cool.

Bishop bros on nintendoage makes an extra sound version too.

The game looks good and really fun as well.

OMG I beat Krang in TMNT 2 Arcade Game without dying...

Shit was near impossible, lol.

Very impressive :) I remember finishing the game (just finishing the game without cheating) and that felt like an achievement in itself, Krang always felt harder than Shredder for some weird reason. Easily my favourite version of the game, it doesn't look as nice as the arcade version but that extra levels really made it up for me, I still love playing the first two TMNT games on my NES to this day (never played the third one though).

I'm giving All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros on the Famicom Disk System a try, and its funny how I notice the slight gameplay tweaks they made since I've played SMB so many times... The tweaked AI on the Hammer Bros (so that they come right at you immediately rather than hanging around their area) is making 8-3 impossible for me at the moment, since I can't find any power ups either! This'll take me a while I think...

Wow, how have you not played TMNT 3? It's my fav on the system!!!

I've somehow never got round to buying the game. Something I will rectify, but first I need to finish a stack of other games that I've had for a while! Glad to hear its really good though, I loved the Konami Turtles games (including the Mega Drive and Snes ones).

So I got one of these off eBay a little while back, and it didn't work right. It was covered in all kinds of crap and the D-pad wasn't as functional as it should have been. Also the turbo buttons didn't work, nor did the sound stuff, but I knew about that.

I tried to return it but since I'm an eBay n00b and the shipping label expired I ended up just keeping it with the intent of opening it up to get it to work.

Several alcohol-soaked cotton swabs later and the normal NES A+B+START+SELECT+D-pad function perfectly. I'll probably pick up one where all the functions work soon. It's not a bad feeling controller.

I've got 2 of those and I love them more than the official NES controller. I just played through Hebereke/Ufouria this past weekend and thought I was gonna wear out the d-pad though, haha

Playing Heavy Barrel. It's funny; Heavy Barrel is a blatant ripoff of Ikari Warriors and the arcade version is pretty average in comparison. But, the NES ports of the Ikari games are absolutely terrible but the NES port of Heavy Barrel is actually really good. Heavy Barrel, Gunsmoke, and Jackal are the best top-down Run 'N Gun games on the NES.

I've yet to beat it.

Finally beaten both of those ridiculous driving stages in Bayou Billy and then got my ass handed to me in Stage 6...those guys with knives don't fuck around...sigh.

When you jumpkick enemies they drop their weapons/armor and you can then pick them up and use them.

The driving stages are by far the worse part, that sucks to get that far and lose.

Same, heck I did youtube playthroughs on all of the beat em up ones.

I should use jump kick more, I mostly kick with some punches here and there.

Well if I can hope to beat Stage 6 in the future I should be able to beat the game.

Great list. I'd be interested to see your top 10 Mega Drive action games as well

There's too many good Genesis titles for me so I had to do a top 20:

Gunstar Heroes, Golden Axe, Sonic and Knuckles 3, Yu Yu Hakusho Makyo Toitsusen (Treasure), Splatterhouse 3, Comix Zone, Streets Of Rage 3, Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra: Hard Corps, Earthworm Jim, Elemental Master, Rocket Knight Adventures, Adventures of Batman and Robin, Ristar, The Haunting starring Polterguy, Ren and Stimpy: Stimpy’s Invention, Shinobi 3, Robocop VS the Terminator, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Alien Storm.

Can a Ren and Stimpy game be something other than garbage?

I'm interested now.

Not to get too off topic but Stimpy's Invention on the Genesis is a very good platformer. A little easy but if you're even a slight fan of the show you should check it out. If you just like platformers you should still check it out. It's one of the very few co-op platformers too that's not simply taking turns.

So, I happen to have a loose copy of Metal Storm, paid 5 bucks for it many years ago. (About 2000)

What on earth has happened to the price on this thing? $125 for a loose copy? Is the whole market going up like this? I had read that Metal Storm was unlikely to return because of licensing and code loss, maybe on GAF in fact, but that price seems outta control.

If this keeps up I'll be able to trade it for a car in another 5 years.

I wasn't aware Return of the Joker was a $40 game, for instance.

Kick Master was $60 last I checked, and Shatterhand is around $30-40, too.

Also, today I learned Captain America and the Avengers on the NES is completely different from the arcade game ports the Genesis and SNES got. It actually looks kinda fun?

Played through Kirby on my Famicom earlier, really the only complaint I can level against it is that my copy is somewhat fragile, the game has a habit of crashing randomly and while the game saves after each level it makes the optional "hard" mode impossible since I can't complete the game in one sitting. I'll grab a cheap cart only copy sometime to fix that...

Otherwise I thought it was a marked improvement on the Gameboy game. Its more varied thanks to the large variety of powers, mid bosses and especially end of level bosses were more fun (bit gutted that DeDeDe has pretty much an identical fight to his GB version). The final boss was awesome, I loved the
final stage where you did a very abridged version of the GB Kirby's Dreamland
.

I then went on to try Mighty Final Fight. I like it a lot, fast and fun little brawler. Guy seems insanely weak though, using Cody or Haggar allows me to take out enemies in a fraction of time compared to using Guy... Otherwise its a nice alternative to the arcade version, and I'm glad they made a FF game tailored to the NES rather than porting the arcade system. It worked for Bionic Commando and it worked here (heck, have you ever tried playing the Spectrum port of Final Fight? Its a complete mess!)

Good stuff. I think the only one on there I haven't played is Contra Hard Corps and the Treasure game
