NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

My 30+ carts are hidden somewhere in my garage (or it was used as part of the garage's new foundation). This thread is accelerating my desire to just grab a lot from eBay and hope for the best.

ARGH! Picked up a 2 dollar copy of Hogans Alley at a flea market hoping it would have a Famicom converter.. All the signs were there.. 5 screws, no latch, flat head screws..

Open it up and NOPE!

I just did a google about this converter, interesting story and method from nintendo, and rather cool that you can reuse them.

That's not obnoxious at all.

Wasn't trying to be obnoxious. When I have a duplicate I put the other in a case for displaying so I don't ruin it. Since I already own it I was interested to see how high it would go during the bid phase. I don't see nothing wrong with my feelings. But sorry if it caused any offense to you.

My top 5 favorite games include

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Kirby's Adventure
3. Final Fantasy III (JP)
4. The Magic of Scheherazade
5. Crystalis

Possibly my first system that I ever played (through my cousins since they owned a NES).

I think weight is the best indicator. As I discovered with my Gyromite w/Famicom converter, converter carts are significantly heavier than standard ones. I also ran into a Hogan's Alley today but I passed on it when I noticed how light it was.

Picked up a few things this weekend:

Nothing major, but picked up a few things no collection is complete without (plus Robocop 2). Mega Man 1-3 down, need the last three now.

^nice haul hero, id jump on all 4
didn't know about that famicm converter thing though, that's pretty handy to have...id need some famicom games first though, heh

TMNT 3 and Super C are pretty major imo :P

Heh winning that Gun*nac for so low is what pushed me to look for one. Eventually i'm going to go for Crisis Force, Dracula Kun, that one Ninja kun game in space, Splatterhouse Wanpaku, and Holy Diver. Dunno what else would be nice Famicom exclusives that dont require much in the way of Japanese, or are just much cheaper than NA counterparts.

In other news:

Saw this at Half Price today -

And finally beat Castlevania 1 for the first time today -

Big fan of the series...but damn if Castlevania 1 is maddeningly annoying at times.

Speaking of Mr Gimmick, was the Japanese release always so expensive as well? I was under the impression that it was relatively cheap compared to the western release, but last cartridge I saw on ebay ended at $205 and it wasn't even in very good condition. I have the western cart, but I had hoped to get the Japanese one CIB because of the awesome hard case and cute cover art, as well as the fact that it has that sound chip and plays in 60hz. =/

Anyone know what they usually go for IN Japan? They didn't even mention that it was rare or anything in Game Center CX, which they have done for some other games IIRC.

Nice job getting tmnt3. If you haven't played it yet your in for a treat :)

I've only ever played like the first level, I think. Definitely played the first two the most as a kid.

Funny thing, the guy at the store said they were supposed to be holding it for someone along with a few other NES games. Guy came in and that wasn't in the stack, guy got pissed and left. Apparently an employee had just put it back out on the shelf. Good luck for me.

2-3 years ago a complete copy went for about $300-$350 on eBay. Now it's going for over $500. Carts went for about $120.

I'd heard Gimmick! was expensive. Last night I was reading about it and thought it sounded cool as hell. Then I went and saw that beat up cart-only copy ended for over $200 and I was pretty bummed. Someday. Well, probably not.

the prices of lots of the games on gamecenter CX seem to be going up just by virtue of being on GCCX, due to jerks like me needing to buy all the games from the show. I went to a store in Tokyo that actually had a semi offical section for GCCX games and they were all kinda expensive.

on a semi related note, got some new famicom pickups this weekend:
Star Soldier, Super Star Force, Famicom Jump and Takahashi Meijin no Bugutte Honey

Congrats man. Have you played NES Dracula's Curse? I swear that game makes Castlevania 1 look like a cake walk!
Death was my only obstacle in the first one (FUCKING BOOMERANGS!)
Dracula's Curse is a lot more difficult, but still manageable to me. I just hate the owls in the forest.

How would I go about doing that?

I know RetroUSB used to make it but, other than that, I'm at a loss.

I know i've seen someone else make it too...i'd like to get the game at some point as well. Probably wont be a Famicom version since its too expensive/ doesnt play correctly on the NES?

Back in the day yeah, but dont know if I beat it. Its on my list to play though, since i've got 1-4, Bloodlines and Rondo now. Trying to play them in "order".

Yeah the end section flea man parade and Death's boomerangs almost made me suplex my TV.

My copy of Splatterhouse came today. The keep case is the most adorable thing! I am glad they didn't have these for all Famicom carts because I'd be tempted to get them for all of them.

Damn straight, haha. Here's some input on pricing in Japan from 2011: http://famicomblog.blogspot.se/search/label/Gimmick
Dem 100 yen..
O_O
Man what a lucky bastard! lol
Reminds me a little of when I found a Devil World cartridge for cheap in this bazaar type thing where you can sometimes find old games. Well it wasn't 100 yen cheap, it was like $8 and they wouldn't bugde on the price. But that's still low compared to online prices. Felt like the luckiest guy that day haha.

Hehe that figures. I also do the same. Games that have been on GCCX are instantly more interesting to me and I will usually buy them if I find them. At least if they are games that I can understand and play. I'm not sure I'd buy that Famicom Jump cart you got there myself for example. That's pretty hard to play without knowing Japanese right? The cart looks pretty cool though.

The Famicom one should play fine on an NTSC NES, except for the extra sound channels of course. So the music would be missing instruments. At least it works on my US NES using the PowerPak, but again with missing sound channels in that case. The PAL cartridge has the music reworked somewhat to make use of only the NES soundchip, but that version will have heavy graphics glitches on NTSC consoles, since as usual with Sunsoft games it is optimized for PAL. Including the music, which uses that trademark Sunsoft-bass which will sound all out of tune on an NTSC machine. So the only way to play it correctly on a US NES would be to get a repro I guess. At least the one RetroUSB had was made for US machines. Or one could do that mod to make the extra sound channels on Famicom games work on NESs that I think I've mentioned in this thread.

I like how they kind of lie in that link up there. "Didn't make it to the NES"? Well it did, but only in Scandinavia for some weird reason hah. Speaking of the SCN version, it now regularly goes for 2000-2500 SEK ($305-$380) for a cartridge on Tradera.com...

$8 is a great price for that game.

A fellow Swede?? I remember looking at some new copies of Mr. Gimmick in a bargain bin at Stor & Liten back in 1994-1995 and thinking "lol this is sum old shit SNES rulez lololo" :(

And now for some AV Famicom RGB goodness hooked up to the XRGB-Mini. Looks even better on screen. Best money i ever spent:

So... I want an NES.
I never had one, but I have a few games I purchased every now and then for it.

Where can I find one that is not overpriced as FUCK?
I need to play Mega Man 2 on its perfect console.
Hell, I even want to play Contra.

Any ideas?

I just found my brother a NES on eBay with 40 min left, no bids...min $15. He won. Shipping was $14 so it ended up being a $29 NES deck, no too bad. Only draw back was that there is no included controller, but those are a dime a dozen.

So it is possible to get one decently priced. We'll see how it is when it gets here. I've had mine opened, cleaned out, disabled 10NES etc...works like a charm, so if anything I told him I would help him with it.

He wasn't around during the NES heyday and after playing with mine recently he really wanted one.

Thanks :D
An RGB mod does come with some negative side effects though. Like the slighly different color palette (skin color can become yellow in some games for instance) and the slightly visible jailbars. The good news is that the XRGB-Mini is able to reduce the jailbars by 99% without blurring out the picture due to it's low pass filter settings. Still, being able to have those razor sharp pixels is a dream come true.

All i can say is that when scanlines are enabled over 720p output resolution, composhit looks hella lot better on the XRGB compared to when hooked up directly to a modern LCD/plasma.

You might want to check Craigslist. I got mine there for $15 last year. Not the best price, but it's much cheaper than eBay considering shipping.

If anyone wants a nice screen for their NES etc I would go check a local Goodwill for a CRT.

I was at one by my mother's a few weeks ago on a whim and they had a nice 26 inch Trinitron (with the flat glass) for $20. I was tempted but I already have my old and reliable Commodore 1702. ;)

Not too long ago, such a television cost hundreds upon hundreds of dollars and are some of the best.

That's how I got my $25 36 inch Sony XBR :D Thing is a dream, 6 inputs, memory stick pro input etc

Isn't that an HD CRT?

It's still 4:3, but it does do progressive scan and has this weird "simulated widescreen" mode. I have basically all my older systems hooked up to it through component/s-video. I use the YUV to SCART for my SNES/Saturn/MD, Component for PCE and NES, Svideo for PS1 and Component for PS2.

I've got a 36" CRT and it's awesome but the god damn thing is enormous and impossible to move. I'd like to downsize to a 20-24" I think. At least if I invest in a TV like that I could move it when I move potentially.
