NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

$8 is a great price for that game.

A fellow Swede?? I remember looking at some new copies of Mr. Gimmick in a bargain bin at Stor & Liten back in 1994-1995 and thinking "lol this is sum old shit SNES rulez lololo" :(

And now for some AV Famicom RGB goodness hooked up to the XRGB-Mini. Looks even better on screen. Best money i ever spent:

Oh yes $8 is a great price, so I was still happy even though I wasn't able to haggle. :)

And yes I'm also from Sweden! That actually made me want Mr. Gimmick even more, since in addition to it being a really great game, as a Scandinavian NES collector I felt that I just had to get a copy because it was released over here, even if only a cartridge. :D I'm glad I got it while it was still not too bad (1400 SEK) even if that was around 200 SEK more than the average back then. It's the only game I've even thought of spending that kind of money on but I'd never be able to justify today's prices.

Haha Stor & Liten. Nostalgia overload. I think I have a box or two with Stor & Liten price tags on them still. I wouldn't dream of taking those off. And you were probably not alone in thinking NES games were lame in 94 seeing as how Mr. Gimmick was in a bargain bin. Man, if only one could go back in time...

And holy shit does that XRGB upscaler look great. I'm jelly! :D
Might have to get one of those, although I still have a 32 inch Trinitron that I play on. It's 100/120hz though so it's not perfect for retro games. How is it with PAL consoles? I read that they do support 50hz output now but how good is it?

Are you a member on NESDB.se btw? It's a bit like NintendoAge but mostly for NES and in Swedish. I haven't been active there for a while though. They have a Buy/Sell/Trade forum, but it's usually only the really good stuff that gets posted there and those things go for crazy prices. Some of the people there seem to be made out of money haha. But if you have the dough you can score some really mint looking and rare games there.

Really? I've beaten CV3 several times (probably not with every path though), but I have never beaten CV1. Grim Reaper owns me.
You can get triple fire bomb (dunno why people call it holy water, it bursts into flames and is called fire bomb in the manual) on the first stage. Memorize where all the weapons are after that and avoid them. Fire bomb X3 is virtually cheating. You can blaze through all the bosses with it, even Dracula. The bosses literally cannot move.

I just finished replacing the rubber contacts in my NES controllers tonight. You can see how the old ones were torn. What I thought was going to be a 10 min job took a bit longer because when I got them back together I discovered some 'deadspots'.

I used three games to test.

Super Mario - because of the constant run/jump combination of A and B.

Gun.Smoke - due to the need to press both A and B at the same time to fire straight.

Ninja Gaiden - for similar reasons as SMB except without the constant need of the button press and a more jump/slash or shoot action in one swoop dynamic.

Needless to say, moments where I couldn't keep my thumb running and jumping and shooting straight consistently happened. So after opening up and closing the pads a half a down times, I finally settled in with a result I was happy with....I'm sure my OCD was at play as well.

Anyhow, here are some pics in order of the process. For $.99 cents a set? No brainer. The quality is great. Shipping cost almost as much as the product but it came quickly and now my buttons feel better.

The controllers were already cleaned out before I started the process. Almost thirty years of dead skin and other disgusting things scrubbed up really well! :)

ARGH! Picked up a 2 dollar copy of Hogans Alley at a flea market hoping it would have a Famicom converter.. All the signs were there.. 5 screws, no latch, flat head screws..

Open it up and NOPE!

That last pic tips you off instantly, the ends of the pins are not L shaped, they are in the middle. :(

Here is an example from a Gyromite cart...

gyro7_big.jpg

Hard to see without opening the cart, but it is possible to look as long as the contacts aren't dirty and you can see up close well enough. ;)

Good eye, i didn't know about that. Will have to go on the hunt again and look at the pins and weight.

I remember making that discovery and it was a moment of clarity...then I got my ass handed to me on the bridge following. Good times.
Heh, yeah. And then there's the clock tower part with shitloads of hunchbacks.

I agree on it being cheating and the Reaper is definitely beatable with the cross, but if he is preventing you from advancing in the game you should use that trick.

Cool! Nah, not a member on NESDB. Ever since discovering about 50/60hz i've been a NTSC collector. Most of my games are US versions and some are Japanese. I actively play all of my games and i can't stand 50hz. I can definitely understand the collecting aspect of SCN though. But the prices man.. the prices.. :)

Do you collect complete/boxed games or cart only? I started out collecting in 2004 and being a NTSC collector i've made some sweet deals troughout the years. I mostly collect complete games.

Yeah, the XRGB-Mini is fantastic! Especially if you don't have any room for a CRT. If you decide to go XRGB then you should also go all out RGB with the cables. Forget about composite and S-video. Even if i really don't have the time to play on weekdays i sometimes start one game up just to watch how beautiful it looks through the Mini, lol. Being the NTSC collector that i am i haven't really tried any PAL 50hz games with it, but i know it should be supported with the latest firmware. Sorry. I could try out Luigis Mansion on the Cube if you want. That's the only 50hz game that i own :)

Oh no that's fine. You don't have to. I think it works. At least it should now with the newer firmware. And yes RGB for the win. I have RGB cables for all my consoles that supports it. I'm not sure if I could do that RGB NES mod though. It feels morally wrong to steal the PPU from another machine haha. But composite looks surprisingly good on my Trinitron actually. And the NES was meant to be composite-only anyway! At least I'll keep telling myself that. :D

But man now you're making me feel a bit bummed out about having mostly PAL games in my collection haha. Well I already did feel bummed out about it so no worries. :) It does suck about 50hz, but at least many if not most of them can be played on an NTSC console without any issues. The ones that were not PAL optimized anyway, which seems to be most of them. I'd love to have an NTSC-only collection myself, but I feel that it's a bit too late to start over now with these damn prices today. I do own a Powerpak though so if I feel like playing a PAL optimized game in 60hz at least I have that option.

And I collect what I can afford, so basically it's mostly cart only from various regions these days. I don't like to have boxes that have pressure damage and tears and such, so it would be even more expensive to get CIB copies in that case. Famicom games are usually much cheaper CIB though so if I can find a CIB FC game I'll opt for that. Usually they're also in better shape for some reason. The Japanese probably took better care of their games in most cases compared to the west. :P

Also I can totally understand not being a member on nesdb, especially if you only have NTSC games although they do discuss all kinds of NES collecting there. But yeah it is mostly focused on the SCN region games. And it can be a bit insular and circle-jerky there at times as well so you're not really missing much.

Wasnt expecting Gun*nac so early. Not really worried about Skykid since it was just a freebie with the converter.

Holy crap, how much was that Gun Nac? Those are pricey on eBay.

Local retro game store has one of those Famicom adapters and a 32 in 1 multi cart bundled together for $30. Wonder if I should spring for it. It looks just like yours there but with a different label on it.

I'd love to eventually play some Kid Dracula but don't know if I really want to get into the whole Famicom cart collecting. I certainly love how they look though.

Snagged it on Ebay for 36.55 shipped due to a misspelling. Funny because its from the seller Yamatoku...usually get imports from there on Ebay, and never thought they'd misspell something.

What does the label on the converter at your local store say?

Also Famicom manuals are pretty damn small.

Oh Yamatoku misspells frequently.. my favorite one was him selling "BATTLE TODD" for Famicom. *lol*

lol wow, its even funnier if you say it out loud. Thats pretty cool though.

Anyway, i'll have to post impressions of all 3 in abit. Havent had time to sit down with em yet, but I definitely will before the night is over. Messing around with the carts on the converter...the connection on the top is really tight, so maybe it hasnt been used much? Kinda strange that you have to plug it in "backwards".

Here's hoping for a "Crisis Furce" at some point.

I finally did it.
I finally beat Airman.

It has taken me over 200 or so tries, since I first purchased the Megaman Anniversary Collection for the Nintendo Gamecube.

The stage was too hard. His attacks were freaking annoying. His pattern kept killing me.
But I did it.

I was playing the 3DS version of the game, and I finally did it. For the first time ever.
This is one of the best days of my life.

Now, I'm definitely going to get an NES, no matter what.
I defeated him on the 3DS, but that's not enough. No.
He's going down on the NES version, too.

Yay works perfectly. The skykid kinda has a loud buzz to it, but Gun*nac works great (of course). Only issue is that I need to figure out the shop options, and (small issue) its way too easy on default settings, especially with how fast you can rack up extras.

Very awesome shooter though.

Congrats, but dont celebrate until you get past Yellow Devil / Mechadragon :P

Is $30 a good price for the both?

I guess I got lucky. I randomly picked up a copy of Gyromite for about 3 bucks years ago at the flea market, has the converter thing. What are these things used for? Playing Famicom games or something?

Anyway, I just recently ordered a copy of Castlevania. I randomly picked up Legends and Harmony of Dissonance, now I want more. I thought it would be fun to start at the beginning, see how much of the classic series I can make it through. Last time I tried it I couldn't get through the hallway leading to Death, much less do I think I'll be able to beat the boss himself. I'm prepared to try though!

Edit: Now that I think about it, is it a problem to use uncleaned games in repaired system? Like, will that wear out the connector faster for some reason if I have unclean games (getting blown in) going in and out all the time? I read some where that I should clean my carts before using them with my new pin connector, but I've still been too lazy to go get the alcohol for it.

Yeah, I had seen that...thanks though.

Just curious because I don't want to over pay.

From what i've seen and heard on Nintendoage, the going price for converters alone seem to be in the 25-30 range, so I dont think that would be too much.

Yes. If you don't want it, I will give $10 for it? :P

Yeah man, never put dirty carts back into a freshly cleaned system. Just clean the games you want to play most or as you play them, that is what I did. I will clean the rest eventually as I go.

A big bottle of alcohol is like $1.59 at Target...that, cotton balls, Q-Tips, Mr. Clean Eraser or a regular white hard rubber eraser works.

Refer to my prior post for my cleaning method if you like, but you will ultimately need one of those 8Bit security screwdrivers...

Thanks...Still on the fence though. Not sure if I would really get my monies worth out of one since there are really only a few import titles I'd like to have (Gradius II, Splatterhouse SD, Kid Dracula) and even then, the cash to get them would probably be more than I would really wish to spend. :(

Yeah I thought about it myself, but the cool thing is, just like with Super Famicom (and other imports that people have posted in the other retro-gaf threads) you might find something new or just a cheaper version of a game you may have wanted to play that was released in English.

I considered that as well...especially where Mario Bros is concerned. I would love to get that cart, but $15-20+ plus shipping? LOL

I probably should sell it... but the hoarder in me knows I'll end up regretting it. I don't do much importing, especially if it requires effort... but I might some day.

Ok, thanks for the confirmation. I guess I'll get myself to go by a store some time in the next week for cleaning supplies, before I hook my NES back up. Luckily I happen to have the security bit already.

Had a good day today. Went to a mom and pop place not too far away and got a bunch of stuff that I've mostly never heard of or played at least:

Didn't even realize Zoda's Revenge was Star Tropics 2 until I went to clean them all. Still haven' played the first, but now I have them both. Got that all out the door for $40, which seemed good enough to me since they're all in great condition.

Also got the last of my universal cases printed today and decided to start on NES. Be a while before I get any more cases so this is all for now:

And got another book case since I desperately needed more room. Right case is just NES:

Eventually I'll get some huge shallow ones that can hold more, but for now these were both the right price (free) so they'll do.

^damn fine collection, hero! i really gotta sort out an easier way to mod the UGC's for NES games, i don't have a drill/dremler (sp?) about...was debating just heating up a knife, heh

Playing a lot of Bashi Bazook: Morphoid Masher (aka Bio Senshi Dan) lately. Fun sci-fi platformer, shame it never got released in the states. Some might regard it as a cheap Metroid ripoff, but there is substance here. Colorful graphics, upgradeable weapons...hell even monster wrestling. It has it's share of bugs, especially with monster pathing...but half the fun is in avoiding all that.

29.png

Also, the music is excellent:

Bio Senshi Dan Area 5

Bio Senshi Dan Wise Elder

Tengen games are a pain in the fucking ass to get out of the NES.

Yeah, it wasn't bad with a dremel. Was my first time doing NES games since I was dreading the experience. Took maybe 30 minutes to get those 22 done.

i'm hoping composhit over XRGB looks nearly that good!

it so won't, will it
It looks pretty damn good.

Some games look more 'correct' via composite, because the original programers took the colour bleed into account when designing their graphics - Sunsoft and some Konami games for example. Generally grittier games.

Also you still get ugly dot creep (that background shimmering effect) on some games (Castlevania and Contra for example)

Older and simpler cartoony games (like Megaman, Mario, Tiny Toons) look like magic via RGB though.

Awesome thread. I've got a collection of around 200 nes games, and I still love getting out my top loader and playing some games when friends or family visit.

my favorite game is mega man 2, just love playing it to death. Ha. Besides the obvious other favorites a few that aren't as popular that I love are:
iron tank
jackal
rygar
gun.smoke
dodgeball
blue marlin
rush n attack
blades of steel
and many more

This really wasn't my era, being 25 I was more of a snes kid, but I had an older brother and dad who played games so I would go and play the nes when they were playing the super Nintendo. I got so many awesome memories of sleepovers at my buddies staying up all night playing TMNT 2 and 3 and contra. Its crazy looking back because I don't think we ever got past the vertical level in contra (third lvl I believe) but we still played it like crazy.

I'll post pics of my collection the next time I'm at my computer, I'm on my phone now.

I don't see how people had problems with him at all. Sure his Tornado attack is unpredictable, but you could dodge them if you kept moving forward. A nice little way to hit Air Man, is to shoot in between the tornadoes by jumping and shooting at the right height.

My pickups for this past week, a little ashamed to admit I didn't already own any of these but it's never too late to buy some classics.

Got these for a great price from a dude at Nintendo Age.
Finally finished my Megaman set in one fell swoop. Also from NA, got a great price on these and he also included some game protectors which are great for taking a few games to a buddies house.
First visit to a retro store about 20 mins away. Got this whole lot for $65, basically $15 a cart. Kickmaster is actually a lot of fun after getting used to the controls, I'm gonna try to beat this one tonight.

I love the NES but i honestly don't have too much games:

  • Adventure Island 2
  • Adventure Island 3
  • Bad Dudes
  • Bases Loaded 3
  • Bubble Bobble
  • Darkwing Duck
  • Double Dragon II
  • Double Dragon III
  • Faxanadu

  • Kirby's Adventure
  • Knickle Cubicle
  • Little Mermaid, The
  • Marble Madness
  • Metroid (classic art)
  • Mission Impossible
  • Nobunaga's Ambition
  • Pac-Man (Tengen normal cartridge)
  • Robocop 2
  • Simpsons, The: Bart vs. Space Mutants
  • Skate or Die
  • StarTropics
  • Starship Hector
  • Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt

  • TaleSpin
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project
  • Tetris 2
  • Top Gun 2
  • Xexyz
  • Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics 2

As you can see i don't have any Mega Man, any Castlevania, any Contra, etc. Of course i know Flinstones 2 is a very expensive game, but i don't know if my collection is decent anyway, still a lot of games i want but i don't have the money/other priorities.

Looks pretty good to me.

A funny story about an old NES game...

So, my job is scaling back their operations on LI, and wanted to relocate me and my department to Florida... I've been on the hunt for the last 2 months for something new, and have been going on interviews. (I'm a software developer)

One of the interviews I went on, I was sitting at a conference room, and there was a copy of the NES game "Trojan" sitting on the shelf. I was talking with the people interviewing me, and we got to talking about video games... I asked about the game sitting on the shelf and they told me their manager found it in the parking lot in front of the building. They asked me if I ever played it... I was like "oh yeah!", and they asked how it was... and I'm like "honestly, it's not that good!" and they all laughed.

I just got a call back last week and accepted the job, too.

Man I loved Marble Madness with my NES Max! BTW this gets my vote for best NES Controller. I still own 3 of them. The Hudson Sansui Joycard:

$8 is a great price for that game.

finally got a R.O.B. unit, wanted one of them forever! the little guy's in great shape, but he was sold for parts, which is fine since i just wanted to display him anyway...only thing that sucks is he's missing his arms!

ya'll lemme know if you see any robot arms about.

I just love the feel of it, and it grips better because of the molding line that circles the outside. The controller is a little thicker than the stock controller and the d-pad and buttons are just as good if not better. It has 2 different levels of Turbo, and an extended audio cable at the end of the cord, so that you can listen to the game by plugging in headphones on the controller.

I just hooked my NES back up and tried to play it, only to be met with no sound. I tried multiple games, and multiple RF switches. I've yet to try switching the TV or NES to isolate the problem and be sure... but is it a common issue for the system?

I haven't used an RF switch on my nes in 25 years. Did you try A/V out? It is the only way to play 'out of the box' IMO assuming you have the toaster model.

Wow, I'm really dumb for not noticing that sooner. For some reason I had it in my head that A/V wasn't supported out of the box. Maybe I just didn't have the generic cables back when I got the system, or maybe I'm just thinking of something else. Either way, that totally made it work too! Thanks!
