Never played Final Fantasy

I actually played the first hour or so of FFVII at a friend's house a long time ago.
Now I have a PSTwo, which one should I try? :)
Or shall I try Dawn of souls on GBA?
Or Crystal Chronicles on the cube?
Or maybe just surrender to the hype, ignore FF and get a cheap Kingdom Hearts :D

begin with ff7 or ff9. if you like those then move on with 8/10. and if you like them too then get the whole collection :lol :D

whatever you do, avoid crystal chronicles!

If you don't mind 16-bit graphics...

Play Final Fantasy VII.

It has the best playable system of all the series and is more easy to learn that the SNES Final Fantasy games.

And the game is one of the videogame culture icons.

Like experimenting with characters? Try III, V, VII, VIII, Tactics and X. Like classic grinding? Play IV. The rest not mentioned are kind of a mix

IX is an excellent starter FF as it requires absolutely no brainpower to get through. Mind you, it's slow going, however

why doesn't anyone else suggest 8?! :(
eventhough 8 is my favourite ff i wouldn't recommend it as a first ff game. 7 and 9 is much easier to get in to and doesn't require as much playtime as ff8. just my opinion of course.

You should start with FF7. It is my favorite though not by alot.

If you then enjoy that style RPG enough jump back to FFA and play FF6.

After those its up to YOU good sir. I dislike 8 and 10 but many people enjoy these games and you might have fun with those.

If you enjoy FF6 the most, FF4 is great fun and FF5 is different but great.

If you enjoy FF7 more, then I reccomend FF9 after.

Hope that helps good sir, talk to you in 7 years.

Tactics. Don't bother playing VII-X, they're a waste of time.
Listen to this man up until the first period.

this is important as well... I know these games require LOTS of time to finish... time is something I lack (at least until I finish my time machine)... so a short-er FF would be good.

Tactics is your best bet then. You can play it spurts.

Tactics isn't even an FF.

It's like someone asking what's a good zelda to start out iwth and you say "Tetra's Trackers"

Tactics is horrible. Don't listen to that guy he doesn't know what he's talking about.

then i'd suggest 7 or 9. 9 was my first ff game and i loved it. it's easy to get in to, quite charming and takes around 35-40h to finish. read some reviews and stuff about the games. ff9 still looks great though. some of the magic sequences are still amazing.

No one is suggesting that he start with X-2? :D

It'd probably be too hard for someone who has never played a FF before. It's pretty much literally V with the battles running at triple speed. You have to really know how jobs work to not end up gimped in fights sometimes

Its hard to reccomend a game for this guy if people come in and say

"THIS "INSERT GAME" is crap!"

He hasn't played ANY of the games, at this point its hard to tell what he will like or not.

*And an hour or so of a huge game where chances are he doesn't know what to do yet doesn't quite count.

Start with the SNES ones. I started with VI and loved it. All the PSX ones are good, but I'd say VII was the weakest of the bunch

I would say VIII is the weakest. Although there were some times I absolutly loved in that game and the atmosphere was great too.

I honestly think: -GFs, -Laguna, and -Zell = much better game.

I say get Final Fantasy Chronicles (FF4 + Chrono Trigger) or Final Fantasy Anthology (FF5, FF6) if you won't mind playing 2d games. FF9 or FF7 if you really won't be able to play them. FF7 is pretty dated by this point, but it's the Final Fantasy that made the biggest cultural impact (at least in the US), so it may be more interesting to you than FF9 (which is the better FF game).

While I absolutely loved VII, I totally loathed VIII and couldn't get into IX. I'd say if you're going to start with one, VII is an excellent choice.

If you've never played an FF before and are new to RPG's in general, I wouldn't start with VIII as it is kinda complex gameplay-wise (well to me at least back then as I never played an RPG like it). FF VII and especially IX are a lot easier to get into I think.

But imo you can really go wrong with either FF VII, VIII, IX or X and all are pretty cheap nowadays. If you don't mind 2D games, you can always try the older ones later too.

FFX, its easiest to get into.
Then FFVII, FFVIII....then FFII I guess, not really fond of any of the others.
Avoid FFIX, it sucks, FFVI is decent...

The only really good ones are 1, 4, 6 and 7. 1 is really old school, 4 and 6 are 16-bit goodness and 7 is PS1 goodness. 8-10 I thought were too formulaic. Actually the whole series is really formulaic but if you only play a few of them then it's not too bad.

Just start with FFX, then try FFX-2 if you're interested. The former was my first Final Fantasy game, and it was a great experience. Now that I'm fairly comfortable with the series I've ventured off to try 7 and 8.

I was like you who never own the FF series.
And i still don't own PS1 & PS2 systems and its games though.

These are 2 games i already own:

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
I'm at the final boss fight and it great but tedious leveling up. And still I haven't finish it.

Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls
I completed pt. 1 and it was a blast.

I started 2nd one and couldn't get into it. Annoying leveling up and dreading going through long a** caves. <~~~~WTF was SquareEnix thinking??? I quit that and went into Baten Kaitos instead.

****Please tell me that SquareEnix cut down on the long ass caves from part III through X/X2.

What happened to Tetra's Trackers? Was it even released? Or did it become 4 swords?

It was in 4 Swords Adventures, in Japan. But they cut it from the US release, because it used a complex system where you typed in your name and the game figured out how to pronounce it. They didn't want to go through the trouble of localizing that aspect for english.

I've just been playing FF I & II on GBA. The music is great! :D
I like super deformed characters in the newer FFs so I'm turned a little off the PS2 ones, but FF1-6, 7 and 9 I love.

Get FF Chronicles for PS1. It included Final Fantasy IV (still my favorite FF) AND Chrono Trigger, which is also awesome. They are 16-bit games ported over to the PS, so they're old, but still awesome.

The only thing is the load times for Chrono Trigger, they're long compared to most games. Both games have added cutscenes not in the original SNES versions, though.

Start with FF7. Perfect for your first venture into the series. All of the dungeons except for the final one are relatively brief and easy. Regardless of the character development/dialouge, the first hours of the game are perfect. I'd love to experience them again for the first time. You have this chance. Do it.

After that it's a toss-up between any of the others. Maybe try FF6 next. Final Fantasy Tactics is quite different and fun, but might be too much to digest if you're new to even JRPGs.

Earthbound, Suikodan, Xenogears and Chrono Trigger are good too. :)

Of course they are. Except for graphics and plot it's all the same travel to towns, level up, buy stuff, use the same turn based or semi turn based battle engine, etc. You could probalby remake every FF using RPG Maker and it'd be virtually the same game as the original.

Kinda late, but here is how I would play them

If you want to play them ALL, do this

FF1->FF2 (Playstation Version)
FF2 US -> FF5 -> FF9 -> FF8 -> FF3 US -> FF7 -> FF10 -> FF10-2

If you just want to play the newer ones

FF9 -> FF8-> FF7 -> FF10 -> FF10-2 (i'd also try to play FF6)

8 has a very strange magic system, if you don't like it (IE, can't stand it) don't play it
Also, despite what others say, FFX-2 was fun, certainly different. Don't feel like you need to get 100% though, the extra for that sucks. It does however deminish the ending for 10, so make the descision about whether or not you will play FFX2 after you complete FF10

Final Fantasy IX, X

Dawn of Souls is good, but you might get turned off by the very easy difficulty of Final Fantasy I, but it's still a good portable RPG romp. Final Fantasy II (NES/Dawn of Souls) sucks, so don't be ashamed if you feel the same way as I.

Kingdom Hearts is different, but very excellent nonetheless.

Honestly, you're better off playing the SNES games (cough up the change or cough up the morals (yarr)), they're exponentially superior in every way.

I've never played ANY final fantasy games.

The only RPGs I've ever played are Dragon Warrior 1, 2, 3, and the first 1/4th of 7.
