Never played Final Fantasy

I've never played ANY final fantasy games.

The only RPGs I've ever played are Dragon Warrior 1, 2, 3, and the first 1/4th of 7.

You poor bastard.

Nurse! Give this man 1000CCs of Final Fantasy VIII, STAT

And prescribe him some Shadow Hearts II for when we're done

You aren't missing anything by not playing the games, anyway.

Buy Shadow Hearts I & II for your PSTwo instead.

No Skies of Arcadia? No Earthbound? None of the Mario RPGs? No FFVIII? No Tales games? No Grandia?

:(

play chrono trigger instead. If you must play final fantasy, play VI

Listen to this man.

If you can't get your hands on those or you want to play a 3d FF go for VII or X.

FFVII. It's loved by the masses of idiots because, we'll it's appealable to a very large audience, and if you're going to like one... it most likely will be that one.

Listen to that man as well. Chrono Trigger is an incredibly simple RPG, but the battle system was just pure fun and never got old.

Not even Pokemon? :D
Ah yes, I had forgotten about pokemon.

I had pokemon blue. Got my venosaur up to level 92 and my next highest pokemon was around level 30 when I beat the game.

I didn't like FF8's draw system (drawing magic for a couple hours in each new area was meh) or it's load times.

FF7 and FF9.

What load times?

Are you kidding me? In FF8, it took like 6-8 seconds to change rooms/areas on PSone.

If he's playing it on PS2, I suppose that would change that.

It's been a while, but I remember FF7, FF9 only taking like 2 seconds.

Heh, sorry. I own it for the PC.

What's with the hate for FFIX? I REALLY enjoyed how it went back to its mid-evil setting, something that, IIRC everyone wanted. Kuja>>>>Sephiroth! The only thing I would agree with was the last boss that came out of nowhere? It's been forever since I last beat it but what WAS the point for him?

And with load times in mind, don't buy those old FFs ported over to PSone. Absolutely terrible load times. I remember it taking like 3 seconds to go to the menu in FFVI, and then another 3 to return to the world map.

Buy the SNES cartridge, or buy the PSone version and then pirate the ROMs to make yourself feel like a law abiding person.

His purpose was lost in translation (no pun intended).

I believe his name in the Japanese version is something along the lines of "The Eternal Darkness," the ender of all things. He was essentially behind the scenes watching everything Kuja, Garland, etc were doing to the world, and when Zidane and Co. fell, he saw it a fitting time to end everything. Or, more accurately, revert life back to the "Zero World," or nothingness.

Unfortunately, Squaresoft USA chose to ditch the tell-tale name, and instead dubbed him "Necron." Obviously, the original name was much better, and much more fitting.

Anyway, for reference, here's the dialogue from the scene with Necron:
Zidane: U-Ugh... What happened to the crystal...? ...Where is this?

Unknown Voice: You stand before the final dimension, and I am the
darkness of eternity...

Zidane: Wh-Who are you!?

Unknown Voice: All life bears death from birth. Life fears death, but
lives only to die. It starts with anxiety. Anxiety becomes fear. Fear
leads to anger...anger leads to hate...hate leads to suffering... The only
cure for this fear is total destruction. Kuja was a victim of his own
fear. He concluded he could only save himself by destroying the origin
of all things-the crystal.

Zidane: What the heck are you talking about? Why are you telling me
this?

Unknown Voice: ...Now, the theory is undeniable. Kuja's action proves it.
All things live to perish. At last, life has uncovered this truth. Now,
it is time to end this world.

Zidane: Wh-What do you mean by that!?

Unknown Voice: I exist for one purpose... To return everything back to
the zero world, where there is no life and no crystal to give life. In
a world of nothing, fear does not exist. This is the world that all
life desires.

Zidane: Who the hell do you think you are!? You're not ending anything!
Never, as long as we have the will to live!

Unknown Voice: Foolish creature... Your fears have already deluded you.
One day, you will choose destruction over existence, as Kuja did. When
he sought to destroy the crystal, the purpose of life ended. Now, come...
Enter the zero world that you desire.

Zidane: No! We'll destroy you and prove you wrong! And through our
memories, future generations will see that we can overcome any fear!
...We can't give up now. ...We have to fight together. Even if we lose, it
doesn't matter... Our memories will live on inside others. So, even if we
are born to die, I'm not afraid. I'm gonna live!
And yes, they did put a Star Wars quote in there. :P

Er, his Japanese name was Necron and absolutely nothing of what you said was actually in the game that I recall (about being the "ender of all things" or whatever).

Every pre-US release FAQ I ever read gave the "eternal darkness" and similar names. Hell, even the GIA made a dig on Squaresoft in their review on all of the arbitrary name changes and mistranslations present in the localization (like "Fabool" and "Thayritha" for "Sarisa" or whatever)

The dialogue is real too, largely because I remember that stupid Yoda quote :lol

Everything I've seen has his Japanese name as "Eien no Yami," or Eternal/Infinite Darkness.

And what I said about being "the ender of all things" is what I derived from what he says to Zidane:
I exist for one purpose... To return everything back to
the zero world, where there is no life and no crystal to give life.

Tactics isn't even an FF.

It's like someone asking what's a good zelda to start out iwth and you say "Tetra's Trackers"

Final Fantasy Tactics wasn't cancelled.

PS: Final Fantasy IX

FF7 and Ocarina of Time share that title.
Agreed but less so for OoT...At least OoT is deserving of most of the praise.

Back to the original topic: I'd say you can't go wrong with the SNES FF games. The Tactics games are quite good but aren't your standard Final Fantasy fare.

Start with the Best one! :D

Depends on your tastes really. My personal favorite is VI so I am more inclined to recommend that. However you may be off put by the seemingly aged looking sprites and the "warble" opera may just seem weird. :lol

I would say for accessability go with FFIX, it is no problem to jump into that game with no previous experience.

Though we have this whole impending set of FFVII games and the movie, so you may want to play that if you have any plans on getting into it.

The obvious one to play first...part one.

Buying the US version in Japan does not = the Japanese version. His name was originally Eternal Darkness.

Hitting quote then forgetting to press the back button rocks.

Loading up the game, it is Eien no Yami as Scott initially said. Now if that means 'Necron' I'll eat my hat.

If you can tolerate 'ye old schoole' graphics, I strongly recommend starting with Final Fantasy IV(SNES part 2). It's not too hard, and the story is pretty good. It's a good starting point for anybody trying to get into the Final Fantasy games without having to deal with a lot of the later addons and advancements.

It takes longer time to load each area in FFVIII than it did in FFVII, sure. However, it's not nearly as annoying as the loading times that come with FFIX's battles.

FF9 has the worst battle loadtimes of them all, but the game itself is really enjoyable. Vivi, Zidane and garnet are all liklable imo. For the one who called zidane a douche, please play ff8 with squall.

It was like this:

Squall: "Oh so she likes me, but the what the fuck do I care, I am so macho"

:lol :D The addiction though, especially once you engage in Ballista... I'm not sure if a newcomer could handle such things!

And Scott, THANK YOU for the Neocron explanation. I've yet to replay FFIX, I started on it again just recently, and have been playing off and on, so I really never caught the purpose of him the first go around, or bothered to research it. But boy did he seem random, but hey, I loved it much more than FFVIII...
Hey look at Ultimecia's 32183th transformation! OH TEH NOES GF JUNCTION TO THE 23RD POWER SUPER XTREME DEATH MENANCE! Seriously, wtf? And then the whole bizarro Squall goes nutty CG. The only highlight of that game for me was Angelo and the video camera stuff at the end.
So for that I'd hold out on 8 really. :lol But I'd take it over 7 any day.

So if I could, I'd go back in time and post the picture my friend Boogie9IGN posted. That and perhaps FFIX as well. :P But I'm only doing that as it's the one I particularly enjoyed most out of the PS/2 series... well aside from XI, but of course we all know about that one and I wouldn't be bothered to suggest it. Well hmm... actually I suggest you do contribute whatever little boost in userbase the game gets from the 360 release... >_>

(|Fire Crystal|) x12 @ 1,000g? (|Yes, please.|) :lol
:P

Or maybe just surrender to the hype, ignore FF and get a cheap Kingdom Hearts
I don't know if anyone responded to this, but good lord, DO NOT BUY KINGDOM HEARTS. Awful awful awful game.

I'm saying the designers fell asleep at the wheel and churned out some of the worst level designs ever along with a host of other severe problems. Worst game I've purchased this gen. Absolutely detest the game.

All I'll say is I strongly disagree (but you're entitled to your opinion), but since this is a final fantasy thread I'll note that a used FF Anthology only goes for 17.99 on ebgames.com. It's worth that just for FFVI alone

Fuck the haters, if you have friends, gameboys and time (which you will need for any ff) get this game.

If you don't have friends just start with

IMO, Cronicles is not a FF game. It is a Mana game with the FF lable slapped on it for marketing purposes.

That's like saying Final Fantasy Mystic Quest belongs in the FF genre.

Considering no two FFs play the same anyway, what difference does it make if SE decides to put FF concepts into an action game?

gg on completely missing the point of Squall's personality

Exactly what I thought.

Santa, that's not what Squall was thinking. At all.
Squall, when he was young at the orphanage, became attached to Ellone, who he called 'Sis.' But Ellone went away, and Squall became sad. As a result, he distanced himself from other people from then on, so he wouldn't get attached to them. That way, he wouldn't have to feel the pain of losing them, like he did with Ellone. He was afraid of losing everyone he became close to, like Ellone.

Depends on what you look for. If you're into cute stories and traditional RPG mechanics, FF4 would be a great start. It's rather short (you can finish it in under 20 hours) and there's never a dull moment, lots goes on in the story, and features some damn fine music. Here's my opinions on the rest of the games:

FF1 - If you like really challenging, really primitive RPG mechanics, this game is a sure bet. Some nasty dungeons, nasty monsters, and unforgiving gameplay... No storyline to speak of, but its worth playing just to see the origins of the series.

FF2 - Stay far away, that's all I can say about this!

FF3 - If you liked FF1 but want a more balanced and improved game, FF3 is fantastic. Tons of subquests, lots of classes you can make your characters, and a relatively challenging game (the final dungeon is next to impossible without save states).

FF4 - See above

FF5 - It has a mediocre story but still the most refined version of the Job system. This happens to be my favorite FF. Love the music, too.

FF6 - This is the fan favorite, it's got a good story, memorable characters, and great graphics/music. Worth playing though not as deep as 3 or 5.

FF7 - Doesn't really hold up well but it's by far the most popular.

FF8 - I hated this game but who knows, you might like it. Confusing but awkward gameplay concepts, a slow moving story that's not for everyone, and dull (although realistic) characters.

FF9 - I made a huge post on this game, I don't hate it but I don't really like it, I'm more apathetic to this game than any other FF.

FFX - A decent, although extremely linear game, this should be your pick if you want a nice story and up to date visuals. This was the reason I bought a PS2...

FFX2 - Hate hate hate, utterly detest this game. It's not for you, it's made for 15 year old girls.

Everything was great about FF8. The battle like intro theme music with stills of the main characters, hottest FF female character ever(Rinoa:D), the junction system was pretty fun and interesting to experiment with, the best environments, the best music (especially the ending), and the story was a bit cliche, but what isn't these days in an rpg?

P.S. Am I the only one who thought of the The Neverending Story's music when you got the Ragnarok? The overworld's music sounds exactly the same.

I've lost my FF virginity...

bought dawn of souls... 5+ hours into it and really enjoying... and I can't believe that the gameplay is 18 yo... how much have they tweaked it for this rerelease?
