New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Anyone else have problems with getting board games from Amazon? Ordering is easy enough, but my games always atrove beat to shit. Twilight Imperium, SoB: City of the Ancients, now Conquest of Planet Earth. Boxes all fucked up, even though the actual Amazon box is fine.

Maybe it's UPS? My Execution Force: Assassinorum came from GW and it was beat up too. GW was nice enough to replace the game at least.
I just got Rise of the Phoenixborns and it was in perfect condition. I rarely if ever get a beat up box when it shipped directly from Amazon, 3rd party that self shipping on the other hands. I have gotten Space Hulk where a guy put it in a box that three size too big plus didn't even secure the box inside and everything came spilling out and ended up on the box bottom all smashed up.

Amazon I believe gets board games from all sorts of different places, so yeah you might wanna check that. I just use coolstuffinc itself as they have the lowest prices (and free shipping at $100) and rarely any issues with shipping. Only downside is that it takes about a week to get to the west coast.

CoB [Castles of Burgundy] is just...wow. What a fantastic game. Typical Feld that focuses on simple actions and maximizing these with combos and smart thinking. A masterpiece.

Castles of Burgandy hits all the wrong notes for me (and my primary gaming group). The theme and visuals are even more sleep-inducing than that of Agricola and the lack of clear objectives coupled with the everything-you-do-scores nature of the actions makes it the exemplar of point salad design. The fiddliness certainly doesn't help, either.

It's not that I require my games to be dripping in Ameritrash-theme (my GOAT is probably Age of Steam, which is dry in mechanics and spartan in design) or that I'm averse to multiple ways of scoring points (another favorite is Princes of Florence, which offers enough bonus scoring opportunities to allow for winning without competing in the primary path) or even that I require concise rules (I love some FFG games, like Battlestar Galactica). Heck, I even like totally abstract games like Ingenious and Hanabi.

I do require some sort of guiding goal or objective in my games, however (beyond the general earn the most VP/money). In Age of Steam it's "make the big deliveries (while managing your economy)". In Princes of Florence it's "make the best works" (or "develop a fantastic estate"). In BSG it's "reach your destination while protecting your resources (and sussing out the Cylons)".

In CoB, there's no overarching principle. There are some medium-term strategies in claiming a full field first or whatever instead of opportunistically grabbing the immediate maximum victory points, but with limited player interaction and unnecessary randomness through dice rolling, those don't make the game any more engaging.

In the eight years I've been playing with my primary group, I can't think of another game that garnered so little interest and felt so plodding that we simply quit a few rounds in (and we've played some terrible, terrible games). That said, I wouldn't say Castles of Burgandy is a badly designed game -- just one that bores me*.

(*To be fair, I also find most televised sports games intensely boring, so YMMV.)

Oof, had a Star Realms card get scratched through the sleeve. They are Mayday Games sleeves and the corners are sharp. I'm using Ultra Pro sleeves for Elder Sign and they are especially sharp. D: But they are thicker.

We've had trouble getting into it too. We saw all the great reviews for it especially as a 2-player game which is what we mostly played so we dived into it... and couldn't really get into it. We spend most games with no idea who's "winning" and when we lost, no real idea why we lost other than the other person got more points than we did. Occasionally, we would be able to grab a tile that someone else was going for but that seemed to be it as far as player interaction.

Other random negatives, the setup time was pretty high and there is a LOT of sorting pieces. I tend to mind this less when the payoff is good but meh.

I love CoB and I'm not generally a fan of Euros anymore but it manages to be a fun game. Dry art, some fidliness with the pieces, and not much theme at all, but the mechanics are really great. There really is no single clear path to victory as there is in most eurogames, but I actually like that. Implementing your strategy and keeping an eye out for others is a lot of fun.

If I'm ordering games that are sold directly from Amazon, they seem in good quality. Just check who the reseller is -- if it's a third-party seller for only a buck or two less, you may be better off choosing the direct Amazon option instead.

I just wish Castles of Burgundy had some thicker cardboard. The hype of building your own little province (don't laugh) is deflated by the very flimsy stuff you work with.

Haha yep the aesthetics are pretty terrible imo. Not embarrassing like Sentinels of the Multiverse or most Kickstarter games, but just insanely dry in a way that it all sort of blends together. Someone should completely reskin the game.

Yeah I agree. Some more vibrant colors would do wonders.

But oh man the mechanics. I get that some sont like the lack of a clear direction in what you need to do, but personally I love that puzzle and the thought process that forces you down.

For base Pandemic I would rate the character strengths in this order:

1) Researcher
2) Op Ex (#1 after revision)
3) Medic
4) Scientist (#2 with Researcher)
5) Dispatcher (+1 for each Medic/Scientist/Researcher in game)

Medic is by far the fun role of the group, and while his trait is strong, overall you save more actions and, more importantly, cards with Researcher/OpEx. The biggest problem with medic is that his ability doesn't help you win the game. It only prolongs you from losing.

Re:Legacy

Finished the campaign this week, over a total of 14 games. Both losses were pretty much unavoidable without prior knowledge, which is kind of unfortunate. I still enjoyed the game immensely and it was a great game to play with the wife, especially considering we really hit it off by playing Pandemic in the first place.

End game spoilers:
Final score was 930 out of 1000. Half of the board was afflicted by Faded status so we spent the entire first game of December dropping cures to vaccinate the board. Got all but two, but made game 2 much easier to manage, i.e. actually possible. The other loss was back in September, when finding the Paranoid Soldier forced us to lose the Op Ex and turned my wife into a civilian. We went from winning in one turn to losing in four because of the betrayal and the lost objective.

Final board state: http://i.imgur.com/C76cElM.png?1
Nice work. My wife and I finished yesterday
and our final score was 757.
We only lost a handful of games including one in December.
The final search was really difficult and we barely finished it before the deck ran out. The second half of December was a breeze since we had already vaccinated half of our C0dA in the first half.
BIG END GAME SPOILER:
I really liked the twist that the government was behind coda and you were unknowingly helping them all along. We lost our soldier, which was fine since we made more use of the Quarantine Specialist than the soldier.

The game was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The new information came at a nice pace and it was hard to leave the game after we finished because we wanted to see what was coming next. If anybody does decide to play this game please don't even consider playing it non-Legacy. A big part of the appeal to the game was the permanent changes and the Legacy portion of Pandemic. I really can't wait for season 2 now.

Attempted a solo game of Elder Sign and I was successful. :D I played as one investigator and only was devoured once. Currently playing a game with my SO which isn't going to so well but things go in our favor. I'm liking the game more than I thought I would, which is good. Seems the Unseen Forces expansion really spices it up but I haven't played just the base game.

Edit: We were successful. :) I flubbed a minor that worked in our favor but eh.

I haven't noticed much backer-exclusive content for Scythe, which is a trend I generally like. I just noticed in the update today that there are 6 exclusive backer cards, though. Have I missed anything else like that? (I already backed it either way)

How good are deals on board games during black friday online?

Also, Kemet Ta-Seti coming soon. Anyone else excited for it?

Bought it not too long ago as well. Really enjoy playing with my fiancee. We've played like 10 games already since we got it 2 weeks ago. Have fun!

Thinking of grabbing Rococo/Rokoko. Shares many mechanics of my wife's favourite games.

Pillars of the Earth / Aquiring improved tradesmen.

Fresco. / collecting the various Fabrics reminds me of the paint market.

Mangrovia / Area majority.

Seems like a winner. Anyone have any input on this game?

Played another successful game of Elder Sign with the SO. It was a bit too easy this time. We've been choosing our investigators so perhaps it's time to do so randomly. There's also the master mythos cards and perhaps the adventure deck could be trimmed.

Be warned that Elder Sign base game is quite easy. I think people might have even created house rules to remedy that. Expansion ramps things up a little.

We've been playing with the Unseen Forces expansion. I was just looking at variants on BGG. I know Gates of Arkham (which I also got) is supposed to be the best but I want to get the most out of UF before moving on.

Oh yeah -- I played with UF too and beat it pretty soundly the one time I did. That's annoying sorry. :p It's too bad because I like the core mechanics.

Pandemic Legacy (May, halfway through month):

This becoming a "zombie" game greatly amuses me. Delhi was our first collapsed city as the black region had a bunch of chain outbreaks because we couldn't keep it contained with the additional faded influx from the player cards. We were on a really good win streak there, too. Will have to regroup for a second try at May later this week/weekend. At least we'll finally have some funding.

Our absolute MVP character the last couple months was the Quarantine Specialist, but now containing it is a much bigger problem, especially with the player cards being able to randomly knock off quarantine markers.

We might have to go back to our Researcher/Scientist co-worker wombo combo (along with Medic because our one friend is a dedicated Medic) to try and rush to the cures before the zombies get too crazy. Or just roadblock the entire middle of the board.

I adore this game.

After spending a couple hours yesterday reading about it and looking at pictures of it, I have decided that I must purchase PitchCar and all expansions. That is going to set me back quite a bit so I'll try to space them out a bit when they are in stock (they are all available now from a couple places but from what I understand they pop in and out of stock pretty frequently).
The pictures of people using 2x base games and multiples of a couple expansions spread across multiple spaced-apart tables just make it look so impressive. I only own two dexterity games at the moment (Rampage and Click Clack Lumberjack, will get Flick Em Up when it is widely available again) and haven't played one yet, so maybe this would fall flat with me. I am 99% sure I would have a blast with it though.
It looks like a game that if I were to set up on a table at a store, people who had never seen it before would want to stop walking and ask to join in. Maybe I am way wrong but I imagine that people at times might want a break from readings text on cards or moving minis or collecting piles of wooden cubes. And that is where PitchCar comes in.

I have never seen stock selling at normal prices, grats to you! There is a massive Pitchcar tournament at Geekway where they give away sets to the winner. Always wanted to own a massive track.

I saw a seller on BGG offloading everything for $300 + shipping and figured that must be a massive discount. I did see it was in stock at CSI but didn't pay attention to the prices. After looking now though, it seems that a full set would only run me $272 (-2%, because I'm only lvl 4 I think).
I guess it won't set me back much at all. Maybe I'll get it all at once instead as a Christmas gift to myself and then later on pick up more straights and crosses or another base game. Now that I know it is cheaper than I thought, I want to go ahead an order it now. I don't get back to the states until the 20th though (for good this time! I'll finally be able to start playing all these games I buy!!!) and my wife would pitch (haHA!) a fit if a heavy-ass box full of wooden race car track showed up and she had to carry it up to the apartment from the office. So I've gotta wait at least another two weeks.
I want to get my hands on some pieces though so I can better get a feel what they are like. A guy back home keeps offering to build me stuff and I guess has good woodworking skills. I'll research if anyone had good custom piece ideas and maybe go can get some made for it too.

PitchCar's awesome. My kids love it. My kids' friends love it.

I've got two base sets, The Cross, expansion 1 & expansion 2. Expansion 1 & the cross are near essential in my mind for expandability. The 'stunt' set, that features big slopes is nice for grown-ups, but I've managed to avoid buying it so far. So far.

As for price/availability, it's always regularly in supply at the likes of CoolStuffInc - they'll get it in, have it in stock for six months, it'll sell out, get reprinted a couple of months later, repeat. They've got it all in stock right now, for example.

Which would you say is more essential: the expansions you have or the second copy of the base game? I guess the 45-degree turns and the cross would do wonders for track variety but the addition of the extra base set pieces would increase the track size quite a bit.

Have you tried Crokinole?
Nope. I'm hoping that one day I can go somewhere where I would have the opportunity to try it. I figured that I would just end up having to buy a board though because I could make that happen quicker than I could find one to try. With me getting back to the states for good soon, I might actually be able to get to a convention or something and give it a try.

Right - depends what you're going for. Bigger track or interesting track?

"The Cross" lets you build interesting tracks with less overall table space needed. If you don't use the rails in the middle, you've got a way of doing 'cross over' tracks too.
"Expansion 1" is all about "the jump" - it's two small ramps & connectors for a bridge over another piece of track. I tend to use it as two separate 'ramps' over a gap or something.
"Expansion 2" has a bunch of 45 degree curves instead of the usual 90, plus more curves + straights.

I like expansion 1 for the jumps - it's always a winner with the kids & a great spot for me to handicap myself with them ;) Expansion 2 definitely adds the most flexibility. Throwing in the relatively cheap 'the cross' helps with layout space & flexibility IMO. I've ignored the long straights completely.

With the base game, you've got two types of pieces to construct with - a straight piece and a 90 degree turn. An extra base set gives you the capability of longer tracks, but it's always going to be the same fundamental mix of straights & turns. Throwing in an expansion allows you a bunch of flexibility.

So yeah, depends what you're wanting out of it. I got a big lot all at once off an BGG auction & added the second base set later after it was a hit.

Alright. More Interesting > Longer Track. Picking up the second base set seemed like it would be best saved for after getting the expansions. I think I'll be waiting to get one of everything before doubling up on anything (well, maybe another cross might be good).

Was just about to post it. Has a great looking board, a ton of minis, asymmetrical play... Looks good.
I can't get play my copies of Imperial Assault or War of the Ring and this seems like a combination of that, so I don't know when I would get it in the table but I'll buy it.
I wish FFG still did coffin boxes though because this would look great next to Twilight Imperium 3E and Descent. Looks like they are rolling with the super-tall Imperial Assault box.

Give it time, there is still 25-50 games easy FFG can work out of this license.

I would just like to see something that can actually get regular play with me and my group.

I don#t doubt this game will be good, but I would never get to play it.

Curious to see how they handle inevitable expansions for this. Was a huge fan of the PC game Rebellion, kind of wish the miniatures came painted too. That's keeping me away from Imperial Assault :(

Where is my Star Wars middle weight game that also isn't a miniature or card game?
FFG has the license for card, RPG and miniature games. If you're looking for something else, Hasbro has the "board game" license, so you're not likely to get anything too deep.

If I remember correctly, Imperial Assault was teetering on the edge and Hasbro got their name on it too after much discussion.

And the one Star Wars lego hoth board game never made it to the states because of Hasbro.
