New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Fuck. There was a BGG Store update and they got Sanzen Sekai: I'd Kill All The Crows In The World To Be With You A Little Longer in but it sold out. I was going to buy that, the Takenoko alt art player boards, and the Colt Express DeLorean (don't even have Colt Express yet, but one day). Sanzen Sekai being OOS though put me in a grumpy mood. I've wanted that since I first saw it.

Been packing up all of my games that are up here in Greenland with me. I turned in my two weeks and have a flight booked already, so I am getting everything ready to mail out. I get reimbursed for up to 350lbs but I feel like I will bust that. Honestly, the money isn't a big deal to me, it is just the fear that these games will be stolen or get fucked up in transit. I just filled a large Gorilla Case trunk with games and it doesn't weight too much but I don't know. I tried to Tetris them in there in a way where lids won't open and boxes won't move too much. I have bagged most of them though, and anyone who has seen my posts ITT has could figure out that I love buying new games rather than playing any of them, so a lot of them have cards that aren't even opened and sorted in the boxes (meaning they won't flop all over the place and get bent in the boxes. I'm looking forward to getting home and for these to get home though, so I can finally start playing them. I definintly have nowhere to put them; my wife already boxed all of the games stacked up in the hallway at home into massive rubber tubs and now I have an entire full dorm room that will be arriving at my full apartment.

In other news: Man, there are a lot of games on Kickstarter that I want right now. TMNT, Codex, that 3D tower zombie game, Mythos Tales, the CAH-clone from the Cyanide and Happiness team... Probably not a good idea to be backing a ton of projects, especially a The Works pledge on TMNT and the $200 Deluxe pledge for Codex, but oh well...

3D Tower Zombie Game? Tell me more...

Speaking of Kickstarter, Pocket Neon City Rumble is about to end its kickstarter. Looks pretty nifty.

So I asked about ...and then we held hands, and I ended up picking it up and gave it a go last night.

It was pretty fun. I like how easy it is to screw up your partner by not paying attention. We won on our first attempt, which either means our relationship is good, we are smart or lucky, the game is easy, or we played it wrong. I do know one minor thing that we screwed up, but I don't think it helped a ton. It was a very close thing though

How long to play?

And along those lines, any recommendations for CV or agricola crestures for couples 2 player?

Played some B-Sieged with the new updated rules/faq and lower difficulty.

Sorry but this game is a total bag of dicks. The new rules slightly make the game less difficult, but doesn't fix the problem that the entire game is completely random. Every action a player takes is random, every card you draw, you take a chance of getting a card that hurts you, or you can't even use, wasting your actions. Your attacks are all random, collecting resources is random.... it's all 100% luck based game.

This is pretty awful, I dont think any more faqs can fix this mess

Thanks for the messages. I bought Dead of Winter, I believe I'm going to like it. Can't wait to get it and get to it.

I've been eyeing HeroQuest and Letters from Whitechapel.. I have enough games as it is but something speaks to me :(

I initially thought the game looked good but I wanted N3on City Rumble more and missed that Kickstarter due to misremembering what time it ended and missing the alas by a matter of minutes. Copies are available in a few places but not the expansion. So I looked at Pocket but all I could think was 'I wanted the regular version of the game and missed out, I'll pass on this since I can't get the one I really wanted. But seeing your post made me go back and look at it again and I notice that they added new pledge levels and one of them has the original game plus expansion! There were only five left too, so I went ahead and backed at the $94 level, plus $9 for the mini-expansions for Pocket (I'm always down for more L99 Games characters crossing over into other franchises). Debating adding $20 for the playmat also before it ends.

This was my main beef with the game and got told that I lack tactics by a guy on BGG. I don't mind random in dice fest game but when resources and upgrade become random affairs it make the game frustrating. That said I have been playing a fair bit and while the upgrade is still suck, you can somewhat anticipated the resources. I really dislike the 3 Divine Grace band aid they put in to reduce randomness and I find one per character is more than enough.

Anyway, give a game couple of play and when you know the resource deck the game can be fun. I still hate the upgrade and really not sure why put limit on what type of stuffs your character can hold or make leveling up process such a random affairs.

Went to ikea, bought a new shelf for the collection...did the same shelves as everyone else, but they do work quite well. I just didn't put two dividers on the top shelf, so I could have room for the old Parker Brothers boxes.

I need to spend some time arranging everything, putting certain games with others, and consolidating some boxes. Wouldn't mind building a single Arkham Horror case that holds everything. Also, need to purge one or two titles.

Shitty quality image, but it's night, and low light, and I just didn't care too much when taking it.

I am noticing that there's a bit of room left...so, yeah, guess I should go to my FLGS tomorrow :)

I think I need to build shelves. :/ Want to be able to put my library in one place, but I don't think I'll ever have under 200 games, so really have to use the entire wall up as high as I can reach. That's like house project #5 on my list. :p

AMUSIX

I'm at about 85. I could see fitting just about 200 titles on two shelves of this size. Unless you never buy small box games...but then, why would you pass up all that good?

Really cool collection.

That top right shelf though :O

Top right shelf is filled with awesomeness.

Sorry is one of the most brutal games to play. Every decision the game gives you is either "Do I put myself forward, or do I fuck over someone else?" Fucking over others is pretty much how it goes.

Clue Master Detective is the best Clue game out there.

And that Game of Life is the proper one, with the right board.

Boggle and Probe...well, those are my wife's childhood games (Quartzite and Rhythm have won me a lot of games of Probe).

Yea I think I had the same guy probably on BGG telling me the game is fine, I am just playing bad somehow.

The resource cards is a big problem to me, as you are forced to really upgrade your characters and load up on cards to help win, yet in our game players kept drawing cards they couldn't hold onto, or using them before having to discard them would do nothing. And I think it's really stupid for the game to have a bunch of random negative effect cards mixed in. We had two fires in a row get drawn, that's wasted time when you need every precious action.

Jumped on the Warhammer quest ACG bandwagon. Wish I had started in the beginning with Lord of the rings LCG but I'm not jumping in now. My OCD would spend like crazy on that. Happy to go along with WQACD and see where it takes me.

Picked up The Captain is Dead from the game crafter. If this had an official Star Trek license it would be right up there on BGG rankings. Great Co-op. Prone to Alpha player but not a fault of the game. Just the group. Play with a sand timer to add extra pressure.

Probably a good choice on LotR. ;)

I'm shocked that WHQ is STILL out of stock. Is there any info on when we may see more copies?

Hmm Not sure Nico, it's available in UK I just put an order online. Maybe I got lucky or there is stock floating around over here.

I'm still patiently waiting for a Robinson Crusoe reprint / GOTY edition. I saw it suggested that an old publisher's rights expire this summer, so maybe they'll have it out by Christmas.

So 8 Summit Games Kickstarter for Mythos Tales went south because of the stretch goal. Why would company think it would be a great idea to add a stretch goal and then ask people to pay more after making 100K. I do understand the cost involve but that is one dumb move on their parts and then act surprised like they are the victim. I didn't care about the add on but it did make me raised an eye brown when I saw the update. However their follow up by thorowing tantrum and take the ball home make me thinking about pulling my pledge.

Playing dollar bets on For $ale last night. 5 player games, newer rules. 1 dollar buy in, winner takes 4 dollars and 2nd place get's their dollar back. Super fun.

yeah... I am likely going to keep my pledge because the game looks cool and i like their other things... likely will even pledge for the last case... but. the whole thing reeks.

if they were planning to have the 10th case be an add on unlocked by stretch goals and not just added because of stretch goals they should have made that clear from the start and they didn't. everyone assumed (rightfully so) that if the stretch goals got far enough that it would just be added to the book like the 9th case.

Agreed. I thought it was pretty misleading. I'll keep my pledge but probably will not pledge for the extra case.

I tend to dislike add ons as stretch goals. Doesn't really make sense to me. If it's an add on it should be available from the start.

Yeah I agree actually. I'm all for making different tiers but the stretch goals get pretty nuts.

I feel like game creators need to have a plan for stretch goals if they are going the kickstarter route and should be up front about what that plan is.

Stretch goals should not cause additional delay, cost extra money, or be unbalanced because it was untested additional content. I also prefer that it not be content held back from the game just to add as a stretch goal, but that's hard to evaluate.

It should probably be quality of life upgrades for the game, already tested and created content that would be out of budget for the base game otherwise, or cool novelty items.

I feel like a lot of creators end up jamming in untested content or delaying their game by not properly planning for stretch rewards abd it can really ruin a kickstarter or a game.

Have a plan, and be up front about it. Easy peasy.

Liberty or Death came in yesterday; Cuba Libre supposedly comes in tomorrow.

Suddenly, I'm a war gamer.

Where did you order Cuba Libre from?

I had A Distant Plain and Cuba Libre pre-ordered from GMT. Originally they were both set to ship in March, so I decided to cancel ADP. And then this week GMT says they've pushed Cuba Libre back to April.

Guys looking to expand my library a bit - only have 2 games now. So:

1. Caverna or Pandemic Legacy? Those two have been on my radar recently. I would play the campaign of Pandemic with my gf. For Caverna 60%-80% of plays would be 2 player.

Also, can anyone confirm its easy to play pandemic legacy like vanilla after finishing the campaign? (I know You do stuff to the board - but I heard the stickers come off)

2. If anyone could recommend any other games for us that would be great - especially maybe some good working placement games or hybrids with wp but all recommendations are welcome. I like good / cool themes - it really affects my enjoyment of the game.

We have
7 wonders - enjoy it a lot.
Descent - enjoyed the campaign, but we don't want to bother with setting it up so we don't play anymore.

Friends who we often play with have:
Game of Thrones (best game ever for me I think, for gf not so much),
Robinson Crusoe - enjoyed until the difficult scenarios started coming in and now neither wants to play it anymore lol
Terra Mystica - cool game, but we don't play it all that often as the friends know it much too good, making us newbies at big disadvatage.
Talisman - we play it when no one wants to think too much and just grab a beer and roll a dice. Quite enjoyable during those days.
Dead of Winter - fresh purchase and I have only played one game, but it was fun.

3. I can get tiny epic kingdoms as a side purchase for like 10 euro. Worth it? Does not seem like it would hold my attention for more then a few playthoughs but maybe I'm wrong?

I got lucky and nabbed a lightly used copy from eBay for a good price. I was looking forward to the reprint, too, but I'm currently in a Cuban mood and want it sooner than later.

Feels good bro. I've always said COIN is the ultimate gateway from board gaming to war gaming.

Speaking of wargaming, my pre-order for Warriors of Japan arrived this week.

It's absolutely stunning; one of the most beautiful maps I have ever seen, and the same goes for the counters (which are like an inch and a half; huge!).

Haven't played either, but I'd say PL is the better choice for your situation (primarily based off of experience with Agricola and Pandemic).

Lords of Waterdeep? It might be a little light for you (closer to 7 Wonders than Terra Mystica or GoT), but it's a solid WP game with a great theme.

The price and box size are how the TE titles get sales. TE Galaxies is a much better game than TE Kingdoms, but neither is really worth your time, IMO.

I'm looking for recommendations for solo board/card games.

I've been playing the solo card game Friday which is quite good.

I've been thinking of getting Fields of Arle but it is a big investment - $100. I'm a big fan of Uwe Rosenberg's games Agricola and LeHavre for which I have the iOS versions.

Mage Knight looks a bit intimidating although it gets very good reviews for solo play.

mage knight does not only look intimidating but it is a huge huge HUGE pain in the ass to learn. But indeed I have heard it is great for solo or even 2 person play.

it's one of those games (like the Arkham Horror) that trying to learn from the rules is like bashing your head against the wall, BUT! once you actually get the game it's really not that bad. It just has so many little things that it is a giant pain to learn. It's a game that you would be best off finding someone who knows and learning from them before buying your own copy.

I can't help to much for solo recommendations though. I don't really play any games solo.

Space Hulk Death Angel was pretty cool solo, just as a card game on the smaller side. I tried it a few times but I was always tempted to just cheat when a few die rolls in a row went against me, lol. I need the accountability of a teammate.

I game, for the purpose of general discussion, exclusively solo. My wife will play once in a while, but usually very select games. My collection is not large, but it's focussed.

For card games, the obvious answer is Lord of the Rings: The Living Card Game. It's a deck builder where you adventure on a quest to defeat monsters, explore locations, and complete quests for victory. I am not a huge LOTR fan, but the game is incredibly well made, so it's easy to appreciate it for its content and design and not mind the theme (but I've heard it's thematically very accurate). You can get a core box for cheap and determine if you want to buy expansions. It plays VERY good aolo, but it's a lot of deck building. Also, there are a lot of prebuilt decks online if you don't love that aspect of the game.

The new Warhammer Quest card game is supposed to be pretty good, but I've not been able to track down a copy yet. I think the Pathfinder card game is supposed to be similar to the LOTR LCG, so if you appreciate that more, check into it.

As for solo board games, Mage Knight is amazing. It's hard to learn and is a daunting to keep track of, but it's very epic in scope. Once you know the game, it plays very well. But it will take you a good 3-4 hours your first few games to learn and understand the game. And even after that, you'll be playing with the rulebook by your side. Other great options are the D&D adventure boardgames (Castle Ravenloft and ToEE are my suggestions for first timers), Space Empires 4x (a bit hard to come by anymore, but a good 4x solo game), or my personal favorite Shadows of Brimstone.

If you're looking for a really quick and light game, I was recommended Dungeon Roll by a fellow GAFer, and I've really enjoyed that. It's a very simple press your luck game that can be played just about anywhere. If you've played Zombie Dice, it's that with extra mechanics.

You should hunt down the 1-player guild over at BGG. Lots of great suggestions there to meet every style of game.

Imperial Settlers has a pretty cool official solo campaign variant that's downloadable from BGG. It changes it from "try to beat your previous high score" to using your victory points to purchase persistent empire upgrades and to pay upkeep costs for new provinces conquered. Plus there are random events/disasters rolled before each game.

the main thing GMT does better than other wargame companies is that they know how to write/proofread a rule book. something complex like us civil war feels a lot more accessible than heroes of normandie because of that.

victory point games
revolution games
columbia games

all do good clear rulebooks and have fun wargames.

I'm looking for recommendations for solo board/card games.

I've been playing the solo card game Friday which is quite good.

If your happy to play multiple roles these are perfectly soloable.

1 Dead men tell no tales.
2 Burgle Bros.
3 The captain is dead.
4 Flash point fire rescue.
5 Pandemic.
6. ghost stories
7. Darkest night.

Some Euros that will solo also.

1 At the gates of Loyang.
2 Snowdonia
3 DR Congo.
4 Viticulture Tuscany/Essentail edition.
5 Suburbia

Some card games.

1 Baseball highlights 2045
2 Onirim
3 Adventure of D (Print and play that can be ordered online card stock is linen and this game is fun as hell)
4 Warhammer Adventure card game. (Dice rolling)
5 Hostage negotiator. (Dice rolling)

Then there's War games which offer a wide offerings between systems (Chit pulls/Dice rolling/card driven)

Check DVG games for there solo wargames. Honarable mentions go out to

Thunderbolt Apache Leader
Field commander Napoleon.

VIctory point games states of siege.

1. Zulus on the ramparts
2. Ottoman sunset
3. Hapsburg eclipse.
4. Cruel necessity (a tiny bit more involved)

Special shout out to Academy games Conflict of Heroes with Solo expansion sold separately.

Then

1.D-day at Omaha beach.
2.The hunters German u-boats at war
3 A victory denied/lost (two player but plays great solo via chit pull)
4. Empire of the sun.

As a side note believe it or not it's quite normal for some gamers to be able to solitaire some two player wargames. Depends on you really. Check Marco wargamer on You-tube for some excellent reference material.

A couple of others.

Gears of war the board game. Tactical minis game.
( excellent but getting hard to find due to being out of print and never coming back ) I paid double for a copy in shrink and I don't regret it one bit.

Galaxy defenders. Some prefer the ravenloft system I prefer this. Tactical minis game.

Rallyman. Hard to find Rally game. Really good plays up to 4. 1Player guild runs regular challenges over there on BGG.

To be perfectly honest BGG is the best resource because there's unofficial variants for games that are not considered solo. Castles of burgundy/Trajan have good variants.

It's really hard to recommend games without knowing the persons tastes/game weight/preferences.

Good luck on your solo venture. There's loads out there.

Took advantage of the awesome weather to prime some more SoB minis and top coat my zombies!

Also, has anyone preordered from MM? Thoughts on them versus CSI? MM has some Brimstone stuff up that CSI does not, so I was going to get my preorder in their...But I have a lot more loyalty over at CSI and love how much faster they tend to ship in stock stuff.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

I think I will look into LOTR: the Living Card Game. It does not appear quite as difficult to learn as Mage Knight and does not take up as much table space to set up.

Thanks to whoever recommended Chronicle. We play it at lunch time and it's become one of our favorites. I honestly could play this game for hours. There is a lot of depth, very interactive card play and fun strategies. Still have not seen anyone get all evil cards but have come really close and that makes for some exciting moments.

MM has terrible packaging. If you are OCD avoid them. Take a look at cardhaus for a nice alternative.
