New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Is it a straight improvement over Forbidden Desert?

They are different games. I was just using FD as a reference. Tim was heavily influenced by games such as Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert and Pandemic when making Burgle Bros. He thanks Matt at the beginning of the rulebook.

The games share the idea that there is a simple rule set for a tile based coop game where you have unique game breaking character abilities that you must use to solve a tough situation.

No, we were at demo room at PAX and they set up several game for us to play. I didn't know the game come with dice. I was thinking about getting it at clearance price but not too sure how long the app will be support with the company going under.

Well they have stated that the app is the best it can be and has a bunch of "quests" and maybe the ability to make custom ones? Point is, they aren't going to take down the app (anytime soon) and people are working on a pdf of the rules. But the game comes with two dice and there is an option during play to use physical dice instead of RNG and enter what you rolled.

How does Burgle Bros compare to Flashpoint? There are people who play Flashpoint regularly at my normal game night and I'm wondering if they'd enjoy it.

I have only played Flashpoint a handful of times but from my experience Burgle Bros has less quarterbacking. I think it is this way because the goal is hidden at the start. You have to work together to figure out where the stash on each floor is before you can grab it. Flashpoint kind of lays everything out for you from the start so it's easier for the more experienced player to guide the game.

Booked room and tickets for BGG this year! Much excite to come back since I missed last year. :D

Yeah, I'm sorted too.

150 tickets remaining out of 2500, after about 90 minutes of availabilty. Hotel is all messed up with blocks opening up over time instead of everything available immediately - utterly dumb, with long time friends unable to get a room. Gah.

It also didn't help that, once again, the hotel booking came online earlier than announced.

So my friend's birthday is coming up and I want to hook him up with a new game.

He's a big fan of cosmic horror of the Lovecraftian sort, so I had a few games in mind.

1 - Elder Sign
2- Arkham Horror
3- Eldritch Horror

Which of those is the best?

It depends on what kind of gamer he is. If you don't mind long and complex game, I would go with Eldritch Horror as it is a more streamline version of Arkham Horror. Elder Sign is essentially Yatzee! with FFG Lovecraftian chrome on top. It's not very deep as far as gameplay is concern.

Arkham Horror is probably the most complicate of the bunch and it's older game with a lot of random event so not as cohesive as Eldritch Horror but it does a lot of things that Eldritch doesn't. I actually prefer Arkham Horror over Eldritch but only when I play it solo.

Going with a couple friends. Missed out on the room but thankfully one was smart enough to book an overflow before even THOSE sold out. Yikes.

Weird how some games don't "click" on the first few tries. Been playing Lost Legacy Kanai version for the last few months, but only the base set. Tried the second set (Flying Gardens) a few times but it felt like random/luck fest.

After a few beers last night, and playing 3-4 times the game really hit its stride! Great fun, destroyed the base set for us, we couldn't get enough! Right now it is my favorite drinking game.

I'm finally learning to play Agricola through the iOS app and boiteajeux.net

Seems fun so far, I'd definitely like to explore more Uwe Rosenberg games after this. I just wish the people online would take their turns in a more timely fashion...

I find Elder Sign with the Gates of Arkham expansion to be the best time to game of all of these. That said if you want a long game Eldritch Horror.

Any recommendations on a good easy/gateway 6 player co-op?

I have a group of 6 with 4 of us having mild experience now with board games and 2 people brand new to it. The 4 of us with some experience like co-op games a lot.

The only games I currently have that allows for 6 is Castle Panic which seems like a good game to introduce the two new players and then Eldritch Horror which I am scared might scare them off.

Any recommendations? I am not totally opposed to non co-op, just really enjoying them. I have heard some good things about Flashpoint and saw that was 6 players. The current games we have and enjoy are Forbidden Desert, Castle Panic, Eldritch Horror and Pandemic.

edit- Also preferably not too expensive. I know Catan allows for more players with expansions but having to buy the main game and expansion is a bit much.

Going to a board game day tomorrow where we're planning to play all the longer games we never get to the table at our usual game nights that have 7 or 8 people. I'm bringing Rex and Archipelago to play which I've owned for awhile but never played. Also on the list is Merchants and Marauders and Panamax. Pretty excited.

Co-op specifically? Zombicide has been a fairly reliable draw every time I've shown it to new board gamers. The newer Black Plague version is what I would suggest. It is like 70 bucks though, but it's because all of the zombies and player are actual plastic figures.

Six players requirement make it a little difficult to find the game as most play 4 or 5. Eldritch would be good and if you have experience player to guide the new person along, Eldritch is really not that complicate. You have one two actions and then do encounter and that all there is. It's the upkeep that can be complicate but if you have a more experience player doing the upkeep (Mythos part of Eldritch) then it's not a complicate game at all to teach new person.

Elder Sign is a little simpler than Eldritch and with Gates of Arkham expansion made the game more than just Yahtzee and play up to 8.

Zombicide is also nice and light and can play up to 6 or more.

As for 6 players, lighter competitive game, the one we like are Mission Red Planet. Also problem with 6 players game co-op or competitive, game can get really long.

Edit: latest Dice Tower podcast talk about 6 players games and recommended several. I mostly agree with them outside of party or hidden role games, it's not easy to get game with 6 players going without having it bog down.

Okay cool, maybe we will just do Eldritch. It's what myself and one of the other players would ultimately like to play. So maybe we will just open up with a game of Castle Panic and then move to Eldritch.

I would avoid Eldritch/Arkham, or even Flashpoint, with new gamers.

If you and your group can stomach the theme, I would recommend Letters from Whitechapel. It's a co-op hunt for Jack the Ripper that's not heavy on rules, with one player acting as Jack - so one player can play against you guys, if they're not as fond of co-op.

If the theme is too nasty, look for more family-friendly variations to the same game - Scotland Yard, Mister X, and Specter Ops (but this last one adds some needless complication to the formula).

Along another genre, you can try Codenames, which is a very popular word game played in teams. Spyfall is also pretty fun with 6, and could be categorized almost like a game of crafting the perfect question.

There are also hidden role/bluffing games - The Resistance/Avalon is excellent, but 6 is like the bare minimum you should play with. Coup is fun with 6 (I like it with the expansion).

If you want more of a deep strategy game on a board and all that, I recommend Power Grid - it's the "euro-style" game that's easy to get into, has more of a tight economic focus (with colorful paper money, even), but is a great game, especially for those just getting into the hobby.

Just to provide a contrasting minority opinion, I'd rather play something simple like Ticket to Ride than Power Grid, and I don't even like Ticket to Ride that much. The Power Grid theme and game is one of the most dry and boring I've played.

I prefer Tzolk'in, Kingsburg, Race for the Galaxy, Suburbia, or even Agricola as other complex-ish games.

I played a fun card game last night that was a set collection game a step above Ticket to Ride in terms of complication. Arcadia. Basically there are 2 buy lines that have you collecting resources, use those resources to complete attractions for your amusement park. You have to have a level 1 food truck for example before you can complete a level 2 food attraction. There are rides, shows, food, games. Pretty neat little game, reminded me of CV a personal favorite deckbuilder.

My roommate played Eldritch recently. It took them a helluva long time to play. It was about an hour setup (punching out tokens and beginning to understand the rules). I can see it really turning away players. I think the whole process was like 4 hours. This was for two people.

I highly recommend 7 Wonders for lots of players. The simultaneous play prevents games with lots of players from going to long which can also turn new people away. I taught 2 people the game and played a 4 player game in like 35mins last weekend. It's Euro-style but not terribly complicated

The trick to Eldritch Horror (or at least my trick) is plastic bag sorting. All the mystery cards in one bag, all the characters in one bag, all the old ones in a bag, etc. So when set-up time comes along, I can just hand a bag to someone and they take out (& shuffle) all the location/item/etc decks and lay them out. The only down time then is really pulling out the board and deciding which of the 20 characters to be. Still is a 3-5 hour game session because it is a sweet, long game.

Quadropolis is looking really solid. I'm normally dubious of hyped games (looking at you star wars rebellion...) but I think it is just the right level of weight to do well.

I would set a gaming day for Eldritch, first time play can go 2-3 hours if you are not experience. I would suggest get everything set up and may be you and the other person that want to play, do a 2 players game run and see how the flow of the game go. The game can get really long with 6 players and down time will bore people who might not find the game interesting. I am not saying it's a boring game but it's not for everyone. If you are into role playing, adventure game with lot of (bad) luck then this is the game for you and your group.

There are a lot of good video play through of Eldritch on YouTube that you can of get a sense of how the game will be. If you decide this is the game for you may be the first game don't set up with the hard Mythos cards so the newbie don't get overwhelm and lost interest.

I made a foam core insert for Eldritch Horror and that save a lot of time setting up and tear down, I usually do set up a long game before the players show up and have it ready to go.

Collector's Edition of Tokaido came in. Holy crap it came out nice. The painted figures are going to look really nice on the table (metal coins, too).

But by far the best part about it is the soundtrack CD. The music is awesome, was listening to it in my car. Channels Okami.

Just got back from TN Games Days (local nashville gaming con). Played quite a few new games for me since I've been in baby jail for the past few years.

Eldritch Horror. Wow, totally fires Arkham Horror for me. Has everything that I want from AH with a much more streamlined flow and logical card layout. Alas I have EVERYTHING for AH so I am hard pressed to invest in EH (but now probably will).

Dark Moon. Played this "BSG Express" game twice. Nice and clean once you figure out the dice mechanic but I'm not big on traitor games in general and this fell a little flat for me. It does play relatively quick ('bout an hour) and with a larger group it can be fun. 4 players wasn't great, 5 was much better, as I think you need at least 2 infected.

Dead of Winter. Wow, hype deserved. Lots of fun, especially since you don't know if there will be a betrayer. I was taught this and ddin't read the rulebook so zombie placement/barricades seemed a little wonky. Last Night on Earth is still my go to zombie game but I"ll definitely be checking out any other crossroads games, especially the "lost in space" one.

Epic Spell wars. The second one. Still great fun with a bit more complexity. Awesome art.

Yggdrasil. One of my favorite co-ops, sad to hear that the second edition is OOP with no plans to reprint. I have the first edition and I'm not sure I can get all the extras separately. I"ll have to look around.

No one had Cthulhu Wars, I was so disappointed. I just want to see what that game looks like in person. It is so tempting but wow, that price tag! There was one game of Twilight Imperium though, so all is right with the world :p And one poor guy trying to get a game of Android going. Sigh.

Man SU&SD really makes me want to get Arboretum and Archaeology. The prices people are asking for are too much though. over 20€ for a small card game? Wasn't someone in this thread coming regularly to Germany or at least close enough? :p

Yeah, I noticed that too, as I was looking to see how much it was. I'm guessing both started to sell really well after the SUSD review. I definitely see the appeal of deep games in a small package, after buying several big game boxes. If you are looking for other small games that haven't blown up yet, I would suggest (in increasing difficulty) Red7,Valley of the Kings Afterlife, or Mottainai.

I just picked up Afterlife after seeing it pop up on a lot of recommendation threads and Top 10s. Looks really fun and a small-box deckbuilder is right up our alley. So many good choices in the 2p small-box realm. Depending on your definition, we've also been having lots of fun with Patchwork, 7 Wonders Duel, and Innovation. I don't think Raptor qualifies but that game is great fun too. :p

Don't be scared, in Volko we trust. Just follow the example of play in the playbook and you should be golden.

Yep. COIN games (and most GMT games I find), you need to do the example of play by yourself, before any attempt to teach it. Everything you need to know is in the rules, you just don't know where yet. The playthrough goes a long way to help.

And yeah, ask questions on BGG. Folk will answer (I've had Volko answer me on there, even).

No games played this week, but a whole bunch of trades done both direct, math trade & local. Got Burgle Bros, Welcome To The Dungeon, more Smash Up for my daughter, and Robinson Crusoe to play. Good times.

I just played it again recently and lost. I feel like my loss came down to a key decision when I chose the wrong wonder at the start of the game. I'm still fond of it even though losing wasn't very fun. :p

Did you get Robinson Crusoe at full price? It's quite expensive since it's out of print. I'm still hoping for an updated GOTY reprint and then I'll buy it.

I also want Burgle Bros.

Got to play Cypher and Euphoria yesterday. After three games of Cypher I can see a pretty interesting metagame evolving. Euphoria is a nightmare to teach to people, but runs smoothly enough once they get the hang of it.

Nope, was a local trade for a worn copy of StarCraft that I'd gotten in another local mathtrade with the expansion. I took the expansion out, sold my boxed copy of it, and traded away the worn base ;)

Love to hear how it goes. I think we are in the same boat with wargames and this has been on my radar as well.

It's going surprisingly well. Followed Pthisis suggestion and used the play through in the playbook. Also watched Marcowargamers review of Andean Abyss (where he explains the coin system) and his specific review for this one.
And using the player aid really helps.
I was so overwhelmed when first starring at the board but now I am surprised as to how straight forward this is.
This game is elegant!

That was our reaction with Andean Abyss! It looks ridiculously complicated, but the turns flow quickly and the actions are (relatively) straightforward, and the systems all work together so well. Anyone capable of playing Twilight Struggle should be capable of playing COIN ;)

the updated GOTY should be out this summer. details are not solid though (we know nice custom wooden pieces and update "not sucky" rules) so not sure if it will contain the first expansion, but while I thought about buying Crusoe when it was $45 I decided to wait since in order to play the second expansion (that should be out later this year or early next year) you will either have to buy a conversion kit or own the new version that is coming out.
