New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

I played my first game of Millennium Blades yesterday and I had a ton of fun with it. Apart from a few mishaps with the rule explanation (some things I forgot to say and came up midgame) that should have been good to say at the start, people enjoyed it a lot as well.

We played with the pre-release tournament rules so that people would be acquainted with the "game-game" before starting to try and build their decks in the deckbuilding phase. A lot of fun was had with players frantically buying and selling cards, trying to coax each other to trade certain cards while keeping within the timelimit. I performed the absolute poorest and came last in the end because I was trying to change up my strategy in the middle of the game depending on the cards I got, however, the other three players was extremely close to each other with like a 1 point difference between each. :p

Overall, absolutely loved it. And there is still a ton of the game left to explore with all these different sets of cards to play with Dominion style, Level99 game knows how to put value in the box to the level that its crazy. :p

Isn't...isn't that you? :p

To look at it from a different perspective, this approach pretty much gives a free pass to cheating, a story was created after all! Sometimes it isn't about winning, it is coming up with imaginative ways to get away with stuff and make your own fun.

To be honest, I used to do this all the time back in the day. Granted we were playing games like monopoly and rummikub, so cheating actually was more fun than playing properly.

Just explain that although it is a fun night, everybody is actually taking the rules seriously and wants things to be legit.

I am not sure how you equate Play for Fun with cheating. Cheating may be fun for you, but it suck for everyone else that play with cheater.

On another note, went to ECCC (Emerald City Comicon) this weekend, not a super heavy gaming con but there were some gaming. I did finally sit down at Flying Frog and gave their game a try. Shadow of Brimstone is pretty fun and not sure why I never thought about picking up since I do enjoy co-op and solo gaming along with dungeon delving games. I like the western meet Lovecraft theme. Might have to pick it up sometimes, I also didn't realize the company is in Washington. I was wondering why they showed up to all the local Convention from PAX to the small Rose City (Portland OR) one.

I also stop by IDW booth and I don't know why I never put together that they are also game publisher. Anyway, nice folks at the booth and most important of all they are bringing back Micronauts and ROM comic. A cross over games with their comic properties would be nice to see.

Also play couple games of Star Wars Rebellion. My in-law was really hesitant as he wanted to play Imperial Assault but after one game he was hook. I like it a lot also but man playing as the rebels can be very frustrating.

I never knew this hobby I picked up a few years back from ordering a copy of Stratego online (I googled board games because I wanted to see what was new, and the rest is history), would take me down such a deep and expensive rabbit hole.

It seems that I have found a niche within a niche, and fell in love with Japanese card games in particular.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Love Letter
Parade
Cheaty Mages
etc...

But what is more surprising is just how expensive some of them can get, literally overnight. I ordered the first Lost Legacy Kanai edition for 33$US, last November on Amazon US. It was pricey because I had to ship it twice, from Japan to US, then US to China.

I thought it was worth it, and still enjoy it quite a lot. I was interested in buying one of the sequels but could only find the last one on Amazon.uk

The other day I had a friend in England buy me Lost Legacy 3 (Lost Legacy: Binbo Tantei to Inbo no Shiro) , for ~18 quid. Cool no problem

Now lets check the price of the original and the one I just ordered 1 day later

Woah! I understand that it happens to games that go out of print, and I have seen it before (Skull), but it blows my mind that it can happen so quickly...

^^^^ We have similar tastes in games :D. I have played the western release of Lost Legacy a couple of times but only want the lovely art in the version you have for my own collection. The aesthetics of a game are an important part of it for me which I don't think some of my gaming group always understand. That's okay though, each to their own.

I share your pain in respect of games going out of print too. I often fantasise about setting up a game publishing business just to publish old games that are difficult to get hold of. We sometimes play a game called Slapshot which one of our group owns an old copy of. A good time is always had by all but it's difficult to get hold of nowadays. The last time I had a look online it was only available if imported from Europe at £20+. I want a copy for my collection but for a simple card game? :/

We talked about the Privateer Press pricing changes for online retailers in here recently, so I'll post this as well.

Warmachine / Hordes is basically getting revamped from MkII into MkIII in two months.

Not a lot of info yet, but if you played in the past, or wanted to start playing, this might be a good time to jump in.

Now to find the actual miniatures thread.

This is pretty much the operating principle of Stronghold Games and there are actually a lot of publishers nowadays on the lookout for reprint opportunities. I think Tom Vasel's advice on this is generally pretty good, which is that if the game is half-decent and demands crazy prices today, just wait a year or two and you'll very likely see a reprint. Exceptions to this are of course specific art that might not get carried over or licensing issues (like the Legendary FF expansion that's now worth $100+) prohibiting reprinting. I'm a sucker for "grail games" but generally follow Tom's advice now -- which is don't overpay for anything when there are so many good games already out and coming out every week.

Indeed; I have heard TV say this many times on the Dice Tower podcast. I have only been in the hobby for the last year or so and have been tempted many times to buy a hard to get game at an inflated price due to low stock but have managed to resist the temptation so far. I have plenty of unplayed games so it's not as if I am lacking anything to play that I can't afford to wait it out. For the odd exception to this rule e.g. Slapshot I can always try BGG math trades I guess.

I grabbed Dungeon Roll and it's 2 character expansions for $15 total. Good deal on a nice little time waster. This seems ripe for a phone version of the game. I would buy it again for cheap to play on the go.

Do you have Chronicle? If not you done fucked up.

I am not sure how you equate Play for Fun with cheating. Cheating may be fun for you, but it suck for everyone else that play with cheater.

Well, what impact did it have on the game? From what was described the only impact was to the end game result/scoring (very final part of the resistance and ticket scoring). If you are playing for fun, that doesn't matter right? If you are playing to win it is of course a different story.

I think a way to deal with the situation is to make it clear to everybody that the result is important. If cheating then occurs you can eliminate the problem.

Did you not read his post? The impact was now he is not having fun and he is dreading playing with this person to the point of coming here to vent. The end result is not important to me either but I still want to play a game where everyone played fairly and not cheating. The fun sort of get suck out with cheater in a group.

I think I would rather deal with a cheater than what I am dealing with in my group (I would likely actually have fun watching them and just calling them out lol. in past games when someone accidentally cheated we often would just finish up and not count their score if it was a big cheat), which is the guy who tries way to hard to win breaking down and throwing a hissy fit over someone blocking him from completing his run away with the game master plan in a worker placement game. The end result of, his girlfriend who plays games with us too has asked us to call a truce and not attack him, and just let him do whatever he wants in the game.

He really needs to lighten up as I get targeted and attacked in the games just as much as he does if not more because I am usually using an effective plan, but it is the side effect of a worker placement game, you don't just let people do exactly what they want to do.

though I suppose on the plus side for me... I am not a huge worker placement fan in the first place, and especially not with the 5 players we are often playing them with... and it seems that we will likely just not play any of them for a while. It also seems likely that we will just break off our weekly meetings and move them to biweekly, and then on the other weekends the rest of the group (which is 4 people as our group is 6) will likely get together and play a bunch of 4 player games we own and want to play, but can't because one of those two (the guy and his girlfriend) dislike the games.

it's an odd situation where in general I enjoy hanging out with the guy and his GF, but our tastes in games don't line up very well in general. (the guy loves WP and most of my group doesn't like it, the girl hates co op games because they are to hard, which doesn't leave us with a ton of choices >.<)

I agree it isn't ideal, but I wasn't addressing the right or wrong, just why it might happen. If you give some people an inch, they'll take a mile. Double if alcohol is involved.

My sister in law is this way and we just stop inviting her to play game with us. We still do stuffs with her but we don't rarely play game with her because her throwing tantrum because someone took her route in Ticket to Ride just get old real fast. I would try talking to him about it first and if he still behave that way I would ask him to not to play and I would just pick game the rest of the group want to play. I am lucky so far that the Meet-up group I am in most of the guys are pretty laid back. We play competitively but no one resort to cheating or whining about things.

I think a way to deal with the situation is to make it clear to everybody that the result is important. If cheating then occurs you can eliminate the problem.

It did impact the results of those respective games but also during the playing of the games as well. For Resistance, it's all about knowledge/deduction/deception that is important throughout the game. If a spy has knowledge on who the Commander is, he doesn't need to try or even 'play' the game because he can just point out who the Commander is at the end. For a game like Resistance, what you say and how you said it is just as important as visual cues in deducing what someone's role is. And if you're trying to win, you want to try to get as much Intel as you can. But if you can win the game without playing, then that defeats the purpose of their participation in our games.

As for Ticket to Ride, it mostly affected the scoring results but depending on when he pulled extra destination cards, he can have an effect on what others pull from there and how the game shapes up. Though it's not as game-changing as Resistance. Unlike Resistance, our group does keep track of who holds the highest score in Ticket To Ride, which is probably the only stat tracking we keep. Which, of course, may have given him an incentive to try and top it.

We will stress it to him that we do abide by the rules and that any cheating won't be tolerated.

Death Angel is a solid solo game, if only because it's so incredibly difficult and unforgiving. The game technically plays more players, but it's hard to subject a group to that game.

Friday is also an interesting solo experience, widely regarded as one of the best solo games (and that one is strictly solo).

Pandemic is also good in solo, as well as with others (you could also just get the app), as is Pandemic The Cure.

I haven't played Onirim, but Urbion is a good one by the same designer. It's a fairly simple game compared to the previous suggestions, but I've found it to be challenging.

Finally played Ticket to Ride last night. I came 3rd out of 5 people which wasn't too bad. I spent too much of the game taking really low value routes to get my tickets done when it wasn't really necessary.

Any good solo game recommendations?

Right now I'm looking at Onirim and Death Angel.

Warhammer Quest the adventure card game and the Big Book of Madness are my two current favorite solo game. My all time favorite is Robinson Crusoe and Mage Knight but I am not sure if you want something heavy and complicated.

Got the starter game of Star Wars: Rebellion to the table.

Best Star Wars board game I've played. LOVE IT. Came down to the last turn but Imperials lost. 1v1 game but we both did not play it optimally, but it was a learning game. Don't know when I'll get it back to the table but I hope soon.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. My solo game list so far:
  • Sylvion
  • Imperial Settlers
  • Death Angel
  • Pathfinder Adventure Card Game
  • Onirim
  • Castellion
  • Ottomax Sunset
  • The Big Book of Madness
  • Mage Knight
  • Friday
  • Robinson Crusoe
  • Warhammer Quest
  • Pandemic: The Cure
  • Urbion
A few of those are rather expensive so I'm leaning toward the cheaper games. I'm leaning toward starting out with Onirim, Sylvion, and Death Angel for now.

Warfighter is good solo game as well. And if your into military themes, pretty much any game by the same company seems to offer single play option and they make ton of deluxe solo play games.

That's a great list. Man, Death Angel is so brutal. I might have to break that out this weekend...

I am sort of regret not backing this during Kickstarter. It was mainly because of the theme. I love the theme but I don't know anyone beside my brother in law, whom I used to play CCG with would get the theme.

Did you play with non-CCG gamers? and if you did how was their reaction to the game? I know at its heart the game is deckbuilding and economic game but if person was never into CCG would they have a hard time grabbing the theme?

Also is the Kickstarter promo stuffs worth having? I don't attend any Con so I won't be able to get them from there but LVL. 99 is doing pre-order on their site but man the $30.00 shipping is giving me 2nd thought consider it's full MSRP where I can buy it off Cool Stuffs for $50.00 or even at my local game store for about $70 and not having to pay shipping cost.

Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same situation. I am a huge lvl99 games fan but I couldn't see anyone else in my group really appreciating what the game was trying to do. I'd love to be wrong though.

Don't sleep on Baseball Highlights. Light deckbuilder with fantastic solo play (I know the solo part from the app).
Just looked up a review and it looks super fun. I'm not a huge sports guy, but that shouldn't hamper the experience.

I love that my solo wishlist is just growing and growing.

I got Onirim and Sylvion being delivered tomorrow. I might bite on Warhammer Quest: ACG if I find it cheap enough.

Also, not sure if this is allowed here, but got a few games for trade to help fund more solo games.
-Star Wars: The Force Awakens X-Wing Miniatures Game Core Set (The box has been opened, but everything inside hasn't been. Did a bit of research after finding it on clearance at Gamestop and it looks like a money pit.)
-Catan 5th Edition (Girlfriend bought it for me for Christmas, but I'll be honest, I'll never play it. Can never get more than three people together.)
-Boss Monster (Like-new, played once.)
-Bang! Dice Game (IMO, just not as fun as the card version.)

Not sure if shipping kills it on trades though. I remember I tried to sell Netrunner a few years ago and realized shipping is very expensive.

Let me add Cruel Necessity to that list. Also from Victory Point games. If historical games interest you at all this one is really fantastic and quiet straight forward to play.
Also huge thumbs up from me on Warhammer Quest, its such an amazing fast dungeoncrawler in card form.

I played with mostly non-CCG players, there was one guy who play Magic the Gathering. And from what I gathered they all seemed to have enjoyed it immensely. During a break we did to get some food one of the players talked constantly about what kind of strategy he was trying to go for (and also complain to me for forgetting that you can't have duplicate cards in your deck before the end of the first deckbuilding phase). They had a lot of fun with the deckbuilding part of buying and selling cards, trying to trade with others and build up/rebuild their starter decks. Even the player who had the least interest in CCG games got into it (he was also the winner :p).

As for the Kickstarter promo stuff, I would say they are pretty non-essential. They are mostly a bunch of references to other games either from Level99 or other companies they sometimes seem to partner with. It's "nice" to have but the box comes with so much stuff you'll probably forget about it soon, especially once the expansion drops and brings even more cards, co-op mode and whatnot. Worth mentioning is that in the base game there are "Promo" card sets included that make references to Backers of the Kickstarter, people who pledged above a level, but they are not like Level99 Promo cards, they are for the base game.

So I would recommend just go for the local retailer or CSI, unless you are a really big fan of Level99 you'll do great with just the base game. :)

Death Angel is really hard but if you don't mind difficult game it is very fun, and the rule book is terrible so watch a game play by Ricky Royal or download the player guide on BGG would help.

I really recommend the Warhammer if you can find it for cheap it's a great dungeon romp game in card form. Big Book of Madness is also very good if you like Harry Potter. As for the bigger and more expensive game I would hold off on them and get your feet wet with smaller game. Though I did jump in head long with Arkham Horror and Mage Knight.

I'm sorry?

They eat the shipping cost. Just like most online retailers who ship free when you order enough. Places like Coolstuff make very little off each game sale with how they discount the product and giving away shipping. They just care about order volume.

We did that on our second battle. Rebels drew like 9 cards and I had 5. It didn't go well for me.

I really enjoy solo gaming even though my daughter keep telling me that it's weird and I look like crazy old man that sit and talk to himself. I told her it's no difference than she playing Bloodborne or Dark Souls by herself for hours on end. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the game you picked up and there are a lot of solo games out there. Last year I was on solo / co-op game kick and pick up so many of them more than I have time to play with but I find it relaxing with cup of my favorite beverage after a long week of work to set up the board and play games like Eldritch Horror or Arkham Horror.

As for the Kickstarter promo stuff, I would say they are pretty non-essential. Thank you for your feed back. Well my completionist OCD kick in and being a fool with money, I spend the extra $30.00 for the KS promo cards by order it from Level 99. It seems people that like their games are really passionate about them so they must be doing good thing. I have never play any Level 99 games so this will be my first.

We did that on our second battle. Rebels drew like 9 cards and I had 5. It didn't go well for me.

Yeah, we though you get to draw tactic cards after every battle round which in hindsight probably pretty stupid on our part to think that way. I played the Rebel and find it somewhat frustrating as the Empire was just every where. The first game was just learning game but the 2nd game we set up as Advance game (randomized starting planets) and the Empire pretty much have one planet of every sector so he was able to just spread out and in two round wipe out Mon Calamari and have a small fleet next to my Rebel Base. I don't know how it is to play the Empire but playing Rebel you just feel so restricted but it is very thematic if not somewhat frustrating. I also didn't realize the deeper you go into the Objective deck the easier and better they are. I should have known there was a reason for card like infiltration mission. The game would have been a lot closer if I were to drawn the later objective card sooner, there were a few that I could have move the influence track by 4 spaces.

Anyway, it is a fun game too bad my son is not around since he would love this game and my daughter have no interest in Star Wars stuffs leave me with no regular opponent. (I played with my brother in law but we only see each other may be once every two months).

Apparently Twilight Struggle is out on Steam now?

Dunno how I missed it...I was part of the Kickstarter for it too.

Beat the first Time Stories mission. It was interesting. A bit fiddly and unclear at times. Also didn't care for the theme on this one, and hope the game isn't always so trolly with it's characters/events.
