New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Have party games like Apples to Apples become a little too predictable? Has Cards Against Humanity lost the spark that it briefly had? Do you wish party games involved the judge a bit more than most do, and gave hope that even a subpar hand of words can still win with a little elbow grease?

Are you looking for a party game game that can bridge the gap from the familiest of families to the drunkest of gaming night's crass humor?

Well, then. Do I have a product for you. Just pick up a handy copy of Snake Oil and you'll cure the party game woes that ail you.

Apply 1 box of Snake Oil to a group of 4-9 friends and you'll find a good time can be had by all. Best part is, the game's level of humor depends entirely on the group, so it's safe for the kids, and has just enough bite for the adults to combine two innocent words together in new and exciting ways.

For a new level of creativity in party games that's been sorely needed, grab your copy of Snake Oil today!

I fixed the novelty of CAH by doing Cards Against Telestrations. Take the boards of Telestrations and people have to draw the white cards. It works wonders.

CAH is fun as long as you don't over play it. Break it out for a bit ever several months, with a random mix of cards to avoid the same jokes from playing out. Know so many that got burnt out of it by playing the hell out of it as soon as it came out, all the jokes just started to repeat and novelty died.

I did some pretty aggressive culling of my CAH white cards as well (since I have nearly all of them that have been released), to remove a bunch of the ones that had pretty much never made anyone laugh. They all can't be "Bees?" or "A falcon with a cap on its head" but it helps to bring the general card quality up a bit. We definitely don't play it as much as we used to but it is still a reasonable way to wind down a party after some more significant and active games and a large number of drinks.

That said, Snake Oil is indeed awesome. You just need to play with people that don't mind on the spot improv and doing a bit of performing. For some groups it really doesn't work at all. Also it is like 16 dollars.

When Rando Cardrissian (the random dummy player for CAH) comes up with funnier things than the humans you're playing with, I can't help but think CAH is nothing more than "draw a card and maybe laugh at the text"

I am buying my copy of Snake Oil on the show floor. Excited to look down my nose at CAH defenders while brandishing a better game.

The coop expansion is out I see for Descent 2E that was released originally with the game night kits FFG put out, but does anyone know if it only works for the included mini campaign? Or can the system created be used for any Descent 2E scenarios? I would like the option of having an AI system instead of needing an overlord player, but it seems like the POD product is simply a one shot?

are there any tabletop games that you can play online with people? like a tabletop simulator? The only thing I have found is the game actually called Tabletop simulator which allows you to make and DL mods for tabletop games.

I have been watching a guy named itmejp who plays with people online on twitch for tabletop games and it seems like that is probably the best way to try and do an online game. Via cams and mics and maps posted and stuff.

A couple of places off the top of my head. yucata.de
boiteajeux
Boardgamearena
OCTGN (for card games like netrunner)

And for a tabletop simulator style but not as slick there is Vasal.

It only works for the base set monsters as the activation cards specify four sets of monsters from the base (activation is the ai replacement for the overlord). These cards are pretty similar to the Zombicide activation rules. Since the campaign quests usually run lieutenants and have special rules that the AI can't emulate, it can only use these mini quests unless you work around it (mind you I think all these types of games need plenty of house rules in the first place).

The fall season has another minicampaign that has activation cards for the other four sets of monsters from the base set.

There actually a dedicated thread too :D

The problem I have with CAH is that it gets pretty boring really quick if you do not have any good cards. Yes, sorting tons of card out is reducing this problem a bit, but it is still there. I agree with the thing that CAH should not be played that often, but at rare occasions. A shame because I was impressed by it when I'd played with my fellow gaffers at PAX'12.

Anyway, I am really enjoying King Of Tokyo. Played a few games yesterday and it is fun. Except I'm pretty greedy. So I dug about its successor and I am really liking the new addition like multiple city parts which gives access to exclusive cards, or outside attacks by jets. I cannot wait to try it out.

Played three games of Eclipse (2 on board, 1 on iPad) and was asked if it was the most strategic game ever. I actually found it to be an extremely luck based game. More luck than Compounded and maybe on the same level of luck as King of Tokyo.

I enjoyed it and will play again though.

The biggest thing is tile randomness which you need for this type of game. The combat dice feel more like a mechanic to force you to upgrade your targeting computers. I like how the game starts out with randomness and every turn becomes less random.

It does become less random but it is still quite random with each tile of space and then technologies that are available...I wasn't even rolling to the dice rolling before. If you are the Cyborgs or Hyrdans and don't get any building/brown planets, you are pretty screwed. That almost happened to me cause someone was the green planet alien and he went through all of the III spaces in like 2 turns. That is his strategy but place more luck on what tiles we drew and whether they were worthwhile.

I would prefer that this wave of digital integration with games happen on a TV rather than a phone/tablet. It's just kind of hard for everyone around a table to look at (or listen to) a phone/tablet app, and I feel like the "stage" that board games work on is bigger than something you look at on an app. Alongside a FFG game, it would be even worse; your phone is likely to be buried underneath a mountain of components.

For something like X-Com, too, it would be cool if you had like a "situation room" setup with your TV acting like the big Mission Control display.

Also, it looks like X-Com is using Cosmic Encounter's Stacking UFO technology :O

Its just easier since everyone has a app playable device nowadays often at the game table. Having access to a TV in a convenient spot to your play area is harder to do for many.

Right, and you can connect an iPad to a TV, as far as I know. I'm not sure if you can connect an Android tablet, but board games don't know what Android is anyhow D:

You can use an tablet OR just use a laptop? Not the most convenient but hmm....

On another note, I backed that Galaxy Defenders Kickstarter and while it supports multiplayer players, I think it shines with fewer. At least I've played it solo and it feels like XCOM board game (but harder).

My registration for the upcoming MegaGameMakers game has been confirmed! ShutUpAndSitDown sold me on it, can't wait until the 30th of August. We'll be playing Operation Market Garden III.

I had that game in my hands today, now you're telling me it feels like X-COM. I need it :(

*EDIT: No way, FFG announced X-COM the board-game a couple of days ago :D

It feels like XCOM minus ALL of the building base and shooting down UFOs. 5 specific members (soldier, sniper, spy/rogue, heavy, medic) and each turn, each agent can MOVE, SHOOT, and ACTION but some stuff like gun jam requires ACTION & SHOOT/MOVE. My only issue is the difficulty. You have to be very strategic but any hit that is rolled (either side), the defender rolls a defensive die for. So you could score 8 hits but then they roll 8 defensive dice and blocks it all...that part I'm tweaking the house ruling on.

You can upgrade each soldier's weapons, equipment, abilities, and eventually armor. The support medic guy has drone/turrent (I forget if the ED-209 drone was a KS exclusive). They just finished their next expansion on Kickstarter which is powersuits and going to moon/Mars.

I think you should look up more stuff on it.

It's hard to even notice the tablet next to the board, with how crazy/overdesigned the typical FFG boardgame is.

Haha yep that's an FFG game alright. Picking some things out:
-nonstandard colored hit dice
-figs w/ associated stat cards
-lots of tiny cardboard chits
-small cards
-busy board

Only thing I didn't catch was the trademark spinny wheel thing you have to construct.

Exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks for the advice!

I personally love Fantasy Flight games, I just think that sometimes they create too many variations around the same core idea. You can play an FFG 4X game in space, fantasy or historically themed and they all basically scratch the same itch.

I own so many FFG titles I'm not fronting. Question is whether it will fall on the good or bad side. Feel like every game is threading the needle and some just miss the mark usually for the same reasons (game too long/complex/fiddly for what it is).

Hits: Netrunner (and most of their LCGs), Blood Bowl Team Manager (secretly one of the greatest games of the past few years), Arkham :p
Misses: No comment. :p

I can never construct those damn FFG spinny wheel things correctly. One of the holes is always slightly too small in exactly the same way on every dial whether it is a Rex battle dial or an X-wing action thingy.

I agree with you very much. FFG games tempt me less and less the more time goes on... Sadly... I wish they released fewer games with higher quality.

Fewer games?

I'd suck Konieczka's dick for a proper non-reprint game. Their upcoming games list is entirely LCG packs, reprints, and Decent expansions.

Their last proper original game was so long ago.

And so many different sizes of cards for no apparent reasons at all. Descent and Akrham Horror being the main offenders.

Their card sleeves don't sell themselves.

Real talk, though: Give me all that stuff. I want to Scrooge McDuck dive into a vault full of premium cardboard chits.

They can put as many tokens as they want in a box as long as they make another Chaos in the Old World or Middle Earth Quest caliber game.

For the last month, everywhere I turn, I hear Chaos in the Old World. It's been on podcasts, Reddit, non-related BGG threads, and here, and it's now on my wish list.

I'm embarassed that I didn't even notice this thread on here for as long as I have.

I've heard a lot of good things about CiTOW, even if it's FFG, but ultimately they all come at the cost of the game absolutely requiring 4 players. No more, no less.

It's really a great game. It's an area control Euro/Ameritrash hybrid. Lots of very good decisions to be made. One that I need to play more.

Got my GenCon pre-orders in for Sheriff of Nottingham and Imperial Settlers.

Probably two of the games I'm most looking forward to for the rest of the year. Imperial Settlers looks like 51st state without all of the issues 51st state had. Sheriff of Nottingham looks like a ton of backstabby player interaction which is basically my favorite genre.

There are a few more games on my check out list, but it's rough sledding actually playing games for fun anymore so I'll probably restrict my purchases to a few more games.

If you are at GenCon we are only demoing (no sales, will give away some games) but we will have:

Machi Koro
Machi Koro: Harbor Expansion
Diamonsters
Rattus Cartus
X-Files with Kevin Wilson signing stuff at some point
Kill Shakespeare - probably won't be demoing, it's a long game
Tammany Hall - probably won't be demoing, since it's been out for a while
Yedo - probably won't be demoing since it's been out for a while
V-Wars - Probably just a mock-up box, but I'll be playing a rough shot with Rob Davieu at some point.
Chew - Probably just a mock-up box

Plus two announced games for early next year, but I don't know that we are bringing any physical assets for those two.

Yea I got Sheriff preorderd for gencon pickup, any other good pickups to watch out for? I need to go check for any good promos or such to try for.

I'm interested in trying for the wizkids booth to get the DS9 promo for Attack Wing, but kinda afraid it will be a nightmare to get.

My copy of Impulse just shipped from CoolStuffInc.

Anybody play 8 Minute Empire? I hear good things and there is an expansion on Kickstarter.

I wanted the Battle at Kimball's arcade, but I'm guessing that isn't actually releasing at GenCon.
