i know this topic will be locked since all my topics are locked, regardless of their legitimatcy, but this is pretty astounding:

all the proper links are above, and i'll highlight a quote from yahoo and washpost...

The Bush administration is preparing plans for possible lifetime detention of suspected terrorists, including hundreds whom the government does not have enough evidence to charge in courts, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

Citing intelligence, defense and diplomatic officials, the newspaper said the Pentagon and the CIA had asked the White House to decide on a more permanent approach for those it would not set free or turn over to courts at home or abroad.

As part of a solution, the Defense Department, which holds 500 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, plans to ask the U.S. Congress for $25 million to build a 200-bed prison to hold detainees who are unlikely to ever go through a military tribunal for lack of evidence, defense officials told the newspaper.

sounds fair!

Just like the courts have been overturning some of their evidence and detentions, this will be tossed out by the courts as these cases are brought before them.

It'd be great if this were approved, then in a b-grade action hollywood twist, bushco was caught red handed in a terrorist act (think long kiss good night) and then used against them... then the proposal was repealed after doing it's good work :p

There's already republican opposition to it. I doubt it'll ever get into law. Well I hope not.

Bush is so unoriginal, he is just copying us Europeans.. Get a clue Bush, a certain other man did this in the 1930'ies!

A joke? Nooo..

Try telling this to people on my forum. Some don't care, and think it's perfectly acceptable, to capture and detain people suspected of terrorism and torture them while at it.

Your honor this is legaly vague. If someone came to attack the constitution or destroy the document I would have been there to defend it :)

Actually I think they use the term 'uphold'

The War On Terror gives me such a boner.
Remember the War On Drugs? That was radical too. And now, there's no more drugs! Locking people up without trial is fresh as... We do that in the UK, under the direction of our Jesusland overlords of course. We have about 30 people locked up right now for no reason. They all do, however, have brown skin and look a bit shifty, like baddies from Disney's Aladin. So it's fair enough - what do they expect? I hope that Bush makes Jesusland have a policy of only locking up those shifty-looking brown types. That way, we'll all be safe in our beds.
"Dear world. You may have been thinking that we are some tyranical all-consuming monster of a country but it's not true. Though we realise that many of you shifty brown lot hate us. For, um, yes, that's it, for our freedom. And we value freedom, more than anything. That's why we're going to start LOCKING YOU UP WITH NO TRIAL."

Wonder how many times Bush will mentionm what a staunch Christian he is during the next few months?

In all seriousness, the fact that my loved ones and I are stuck on this really rather small planet right now bothers me more by the day.

Actually, the Europeans had a great run of fascism. When did Franco die?

Oh, and we've already had one American dictator. Abraham Lincoln suspended habeus corpus ...

Lincoln could have easily cited "rebellion" for constitutional justification. On the other hand, it would be an interesting statement to make if Bush were to say Saudis were rebelling against us, and the only other reason allowed in the constitution, invasion, is a bit of a stretch. ;)
