They suffered the most from Nazis, they should take the lead on purging the world of next-gen Nazi shit in their own backyard at least, and they have the capability to do.

The civilized world should give Israel what support it needs to do this.

You haven't been following recent events have you...
They are too busy with a genocide of their own

Those pictures are disturbing. For a person in the 21st century to go through such vile acts makes this all seem unreal.

God damn. What can we do?

Umm... Israel has been essentially the most active anti-Syria force. They held several airstrike campaigns throughout the conflict to severely damage Assad's movement, including the destruction of a nuclear facility (with military purpose) in 2007.

I understand Israel is the big bad wolf on the Internet right now, but Israeli airstrikes on Syria were mainstream news as recent as a month ago...

Not sure what more you want from them while they are battling an army of terrorists in their literal backyard right now.

You haven't been following recent events have you...

There aren't enough ellipses in the world for this post.

Can´t believe the world leaders sits on their butts as things like this is happening.
It´s like nobody dares to do anything anymore these days.

The world needs to get there and do the ordinary stuff to protect human rights and freedom with the United Nations in charge.

Iraq, Ukraine, Syria, Gaza, Egypt, Libya. It's getting hard to keep up with all these dead civilians ;_;
Because the opposition is just as shitty, so it's a lose/lose situation. I imagine a lot of people lost interest since there is no side to root for.
There are others as well, and yes there is no "good side" in these, and involving ourselves to forcefully end the atrocities of both sides and take over is something we can't afford, don't actually have enough power to do, would be arrogant and wrong of us to do even if we could as these nations/cultures are bigger than their issues and imperialism isn't the answer, and it would likely kick off WW3. At some point you have to realize you can't fix everything just by running in and shooting people, and yet our other option of sanctions and such can make millions upon millions more innocents suffer when they need not. It really sucks and it is really hard to balance while moving toward progress, and we (and much of congress) probably don't even know half the complications of international relations that are revealed by secret intelligence.

Right now Israel vs Palestinians is getting 10x the attention of ISIS in Iraq, Syrian civil war, Afghanistan / Pakistan border regions, Boko Haram in west Africa, Thailand coup, and Ukraine vs Russia *combined*...

I still contend Israel gets the coverage it gets because it is a fresh conflict, our countries religious heritage and is so front and center in the media due to Israel's deep effect on our political system. And within that is Israel's unprecedented around the world media and propaganda blitz that draws attention to their conflict.

Syria, Ukraine, Pakistan and Iraq have all been in the spotlight front and center for a period of time but as time has passed everyone moves on to the next conflict. I think if Israel remains assaulting gaza for too much longer fatigue and apathy will set in their as well.

It bothers me that people say this. Because it's in the 21st Century, it feels "unreal" ? It's pretty damn clear now this century was never the shining light of reason, peace and enlightenment as we were taught to believe it would be. You've got what's "unreal" switched around. This idea that the 21st century isn't a century for atrocities is basically just collective, Western egoism, probably sold to us by the media at that. Our own ideas of mankind's progress are incredibly out-of-sync with reality.

The situation in the Middle East truly seems hopeless. What could we do when the side opposing Assad's Syria is at least just as bad as him. Maybe even worse in the end, since ISIS is vehemently against the west and would most likely start executing terrorist attacks against us.

Should we side with the devil or .... The devil .

Absurdly fucked up photos. So depressing what we do to ourselves.

That's a major factor, yeah.

The world really is in a horrible place right now.

And it's just so sad to think that a couple years ago everyone was thinking that the Arab Spring was going to bring about a new era in the Middle East. With more democratic countries and movement toward less instability.

Instead it seems like the story is turning more into a nightmare then the fairy tale we had hoped.

I still don't get why people thought this was going to end well when it started.

It's supported by the west. People don't like it when they know they're enabling it and their governments are not calling it out. The PR army also looks ridiculous in the light of thousands of civilian deaths.

Presentation.

Eh, I don't think it's just media programming us to think a certain arrogant way. It is built into our nature to accept new plateaus of being and climb higher. It's a wonderful survival instinct that allows us to develop and flourish in a positive environment, even when it is very challenging to our mind to comprehend and against our natural cravings and passions.

However, because of this instinct to accept, adapt, and continue on, we grow up around ethical and philosophical training and education of all sorts and then consider the person we become within it to be what it means to be human. In reality, we are all still born as little cavemen, and without that guidance of wisdom developed and distilled over millennia we will still enact horrors upon each other.

If we survive, some portion of us will no doubt continue growing in our ethical consciousness, and there will be a day when the impacts of chosen infrastructure are seen as being just as much a matter of personal power and responsibility as direct acts like this torture. The corruption, poverty, and pollution that our infrastructure creates will seem just as barbaric and "old world" as this torture does to our society now.

What can I do to help? Are there any humanitarian efforts that are trying to help people flee/seek refuge? I would like to donate to such causes.

Put me in the "Glad I clicked" crowd.

Seeing things like this is always shocking. And horrifying. It is a tough pill to swallow. But I am still always glad I clicked...because then at least I know. The follow-up though is what can I do to help? What can I do to make a difference? Without that, clicking is pointless. The problem is, I don't know what I can do to help...is there anything?

I'd say it's pretty hopeless at this point. Western interference only seems to make it worse.

Anyone who gives one sentence answer to why there is Civil War in Syria and why this is happening should not be taken seriously. It will only make you dumb. The truth is always more complex. Its why Fox News persists. They boil down complex problems to evil democrats, evil muslims, freedom loving conservatives, they hate us for our freedom, war on christmas, socialism, etc. so people who dont want to or like to or are too lazy to think and hnderstand gobble it up.

I clicked expecting black and white gritty photos.. then bam, first clear image in full color.

Nope.

That's the reality. History books and photographs make it so that it seems we've moved beyond that point in time. When in reality we have not seen the horror of what it was like in our own lives. This is what's happening everyday and no one is accountable because they're too busy saying how much they hate a certain group of people. Eventually all the documented films will be packaged somewhere and we'll have to build massive graves for everyone who has suffered from this kind of hatred.

The least we can do is to put sanctions in Syrian Regime and any country supporting thus regime,
No need for Military intervintion since the Regime is struggling
Huge crippling Sanctions on the Regime and its supporters will do the trick
Have people learned nothing from Iraq? Doing that would only allow the major rebel group to take over, and that's ISIS! That's worse than Assad.

The Alawites are never going to live under sunni rule because of how they were treated before, the only hope is to split the country up, but who would want to be the peacekeepers in that situation I don't know.

The west shouldn't be prodding the place with a stick in any case. Either commit heavily to sorting it out or let the locals do it.

It would seem to be this one guy who took the photos.

Interference, yes. Interaction, no. Think of it like trying to help someone who is wrapped up in a cult. If you walk into their meeting place with an air of pretension and start trying to make your case for why they should give it up, as if you even understand their views to begin with, it's only going to get them riled up.

However, if you befriend someone in it, and just exist in their life as an outside perspective with your different way of life, but clearly being caring for them, it chips away at the programming to hold enmity against outside views and customs, and opens their mind to healthier alternatives, and they may in time walk out freely on their own.

In a similar way, the more isolated a culture is, the more easily they can remain blind to alternatives and hold enmity toward one another over particulars and toward outsiders just for not being them. So it is through friendships that new angles of perspective from other cultures about life and the complications of the world and options for how to deal with it can be received.

Just as a fine speech is only formed after consistent mundane studies until sufficient understanding and wisdom is attained, to attain the virtue to overcome the greatest injustices, prejudices, conflicts of interests, and differences, we must first learn to do so in all the same things in small, mundane ways.

You need to believe you are changing the world when you reach out your one small hand of friendship, otherwise you give up on the good that can only come through that open door. I think there is much good that never grows to bear fruit in the world because we belittle the impact of our individual lives and abandon our small efforts before their collective power coalesces.

US invades Iraq over false pretensions of WMDs but doesn't invade a country completing atrocities the world said agreed would never allow again.

My government blows.

Wat?

Bro these are large functioning governments committing these atrocities; their reasons may be stupid but they're multi-layered and incredibly complex.

And this sort of thinking is also an insult to the real tribes in the world; some of the most peaceful people of today are tribesmen and women.

It bothers me that people say this. Because it's in the 21st Century, it feels "unreal" ? Could not agree more.

What's with the cross tattoos(?) on one of the bodies? And what's being censored on some of their chests?
Would not be surprised if they were swastikas.

You are a sick despicable, blind, offensive ignorant person for even equating the two events.

Over 250 000 people are fucking dead, god knows how many were tortured, starved, gassed with chemical weapons. Barrel bombed. Executed. Beheaded.

The US invading Syria would solve nothing as the Syrian opposition is terrible as well. ISIS and other radical Islamists completely hijacked the movement.

edit: The US would just set up its own puppet regime anyway that would probably be corrupt anyway going by our track record.

It's unfortunate situation. The only way to solve it is a full invasion of UN forces because the opposition to Assad is just as bad. Nobody actually wants to do that of course.

What would an invasion do? Seriously, have people learned nothing from Iraq. The rebels are worse than Assad.

US tried to vote for UNSC resolution. China and Russia vetoed it.

There are days when I wonder if President Obama should just say, "F__ THIS" and hit the Red Button in that armored suitcase handcuffed to his Secret Service agent.

What a sick wold we live in.
