Exactly. What the Syrian government is doing is appalling but then you read about ISIS sticking heads on poles. As with all the conflicts in the Middle East the civilians lose out. I really think Syria is a lost cause.

The root causes? I'd say the fall of the Ottoman Empire after WW1, colonial west arbitrarily carving out different states out of the Empire's remains and the creation of Israel after WW2. And religion of course: Sunni's vs. Shiites inside Islam (plus the Kurds) and Muslims vs. Christians and Jews.

The shocking and disappointing part is that these things can still happen unchecked today. In the era of instant news and ubiquitous cameras, THIS sort of atrocity can still happen. And even still, most simply won't care. Whether Rwanda, Syria, Bosnia, Somalia, Sudan...the saddest part is that most simply don't give a damn. Shocking footage like this is more likely to stir calls for action though, which is good.
