New Elder Scrolls IV:Oblivion feature @ The Washington Post!!(PC/X360)

is it SteveMeister?

No, that's my boss, Todd Howard.

And that IS widescreen -- the black areas on the sides of his monitor are speakers. The monitor's nice, but the resolution is low. It's only a 780p HDTV display. I'd rather have a monitor that size running at a higher resolution than that.

Oh yeah, and there's currently a photoshop contest going on. The winner gets an Oblivion t-shirt. :lol

Hey Steve, are you guys shooting for Oblivion to be available on launch day???

That would be huge, if true.....not often we get an RPG at launch....in fact, has it ever been done before??

So Steve.... um.... damn it I sound like a broken record but.. ah fuck it; got any dragons in that thar game? A small infitesimally important hint would be all that we of the GAF require, eh? Eh? Nudge? Eh?

Well, that's what the article says. We haven't officially announced a release date yet, though. You know how those things go.

Dragons? Can't comment on that, sorry :)

Since SteveMiester can't talk about Oblivion too much at the moment he should spill more beans on the next Fallout title. :D

Even so, you can comment on info available that we can't be bothered tracking down right?

Are there any dragons in the Elderscroll universe? Has any appeared in previous games?

Here's a quick wallpaper for you guys:

Sorry about the bad quality of the wallpaper but I didn't have much time to make it pretty and I wanted to whip something up real quick for a friend. THAT PICTURE IS GOLDEN.

this is still being developed by Bathesta in russia, right?

Nooo note quite. We're a US company, we have published Russian games before however (probably where you're confused).

Can you comment on releasing PC and console version at the same time?
Or is there some exclusivity (read: money grabbing) going on behind the scenes?

Just a:
"We are planning on releasing both versions at the same time" will be enough.
Of course planning can go wrong :/

We're still busy optimizing, so I can't make a realistic comment about the frame rate on any platform.

There are dragons in the Elder Scrolls universe, they're mostly the aspects of some of the deities. The Empire of Tamriel refers to the Emperor as the Dragon, and the Imperial Symbol incorporates a dragon in it as seen on the Morrowind cover. But as to which gods or creatures appear in Oblivion in particular, I can't comment on that yet.

I might get a 360 this year just for Oblivion. I played the hell out of Morrowind and was able to overlook its flaws, so unless this game has been dumbed down I want it real bad.

So... has it been dumbed down in any way? I don't care about the teleportation stuff.

It's been smartied up.

All indications point to this being a great improvement over Morrowind, especially in the realm of A.I., combat, exploration, questing, and graphics. The teleportation is there for people who want to enjoy a nice and fast moving RPG without any down time between missions.

Technically it's not even teleportation. Game time passes when you fast travel, so if you have any buff spells active they might wear off, and if you're poisoned, you might even die along the way if you don't cure it first. So it may be fast for you the player, but not for your character.

Awesome. I wonder why there isn't more hype for this game, especially for those that were burned by Fable.

That's excellent, so its a more advanced version of the Siltstriders. Not that I was going to use teleportation but I thought it was simply a method for those who don't want to explore to play the game at a faster pace, like instant transportation.

OBLIVION ROCKS

I wouldn't even say it's to make the game faster paced... it's more for "I'm in city A.. city B is a 40minute walk from here (real time)" Not everyone wants to treck that back and forth if you need something.

Being an Elderscrolls fan since day one, I'm salivating like Pavlov's dog in anticipation of this game. Has there been any word on PC and/or XBox360 release?

What's combat like? Is it fast paced actioney?

Will there be combos? Like... left click left click left click will produce a standard light 3 hit swing, but you can change things up with left click left click left click hold, which would change the last hit into a powerful strike.
Or what about double tapping forward and attacking to produce a powerful charging attack?

Ok. I'm just thinking wishfully now and hoping I can plant some ideas that I'd like to see in the game :P

I think thats what made the games awesome. You're walking and boom you get attacked by a bunch of thieves, or you find a cave filled with vampires and whatsnot, You find an item, decide to find the nearest village to sell it, and boom you get caught in more sub quests, and it never ends :lol

I thought all Xbox 360 games were supposed to be widescreen.

That is widescreen, the black parts on the side are the physical plastic on the monitor itself.

Well that does speed up the pacing of the game, it eliminates that 40 minute trek lull in between quests. It's a fantastic addition to the game that's going to give a lot of gamers that were put off by Morrowind's vast expanse quicker access to the quests at hand. Going back to and expanding upon my original statement: It provides players who don't wish to put up with the hassle of constantly exploring or trekking through locations they've already been through. That is what I meant.

What I would love to know is the comparisons between the two versions in terms of graphics. I'm also curious about Bethesda's plans to support Xbox Live downloadable functions. Could I make a mod for the PC and download it for the X360 version, questions of that nature.

OBLIVION ROCKS

... although you're trying to help, it would help more if you read the rest of the thread and realised the explanation had been posted twice (or more) already.

I heard this game is like The Sims 2 where you can build your own character's face. Can anyone confirm this? Of all the screenshots I've seen, the main character had the same face or either his face wasn't shown. :D

quick question for any of the bethesda guys in the thread:

does this game still have falling damage, like in Morrowind?

if it does, is the damage actually based on a physical model of how fast you're falling, or can it still be negated by a 1-point slow fall spell, like in Morrowind? I do think it's funny that the fastest way to travel in Morrowind is by jumping all over the place :lol

What i loved about Morrowind was looking up the name of a place i had to travel to on the map (the real, paper map), judging the distances, deciding which route to take and preparing my backpack choosing the items i would bring with me according to the areas i would have to travel through and the monsters i would likely encounter. Wonderful.

So, can anyone reassure us this is really coming in november ?
And a question for Steve, can you tell us approximately how long does it take to travel on foot from "side to side" of the map ?

I can't confirm this, but I believe I heard the same thing. I follow this game pretty closely but I never keep track of articles I read. Heh

They did say the face editor allows you to basically make your character look any way you want.

This may answer some of your questions.

eso76, I have no idea how long it'd take to walk the distance. I haven't tried. :)

Nice, it sounds like its shaping up. I guess the difference between gimmick and greatness now lies in careful balance to make sure everything feels right. Hopefully it's something easy to pickup but difficult to master, much like the seminal weapons fighter series Soul Calibur.

Could I suggest though, not to be afraid of making use of double taps... like with dodging in UT, except not dodging... :P I'm sure you guys know what you're doing! Or we'll all come and demand blood when the game is released!

Oblivion will feature 50 hours of game dialogue

Holy shit! If I do my math right 50 hours of mp3 audio is about 3GB. That makes the dialogue part of Oblivion larger than some full games right now!

Will this game fit on a single DVD? I'll laugh at the "a DVD is enough" folks if it doesn't.
