You can now securely place giveaway keys into your posts, and be sure that they won't be claimed by lurkers or bots. Here's how it works:

Step 1: Select "Key Giveaway" from the editor

Step 2: Type your key in the KEY BBCode that's inserted

Step 3: Press "Post reply" (or "Post thread" if you're putting your giveaway in a new thread)

The system will automatically try to determine what type of key you're giving away, in this example:

It supports multiple types of keys! You can create multiple giveaways in a single post!

If you want to let people know the name of the game (or whatever you are giving away), simply add an optional title to the KEY tag. For example:

To claim a giveaway that someone's posted, simply click the button in their post. If you're fast enough, the system will DM you the key and mark the giveaway as redeemed.

The post will get changed to this:

This system ensures that only one user gets the code you've given away, and that user is publicly accountable.

Feel free to use this thread to ask questions, provide feedback, or to post your own random giveaways.

Sounds like you hit the button to redeem the key, but it was already claimed. Noted though, I'll adjust that. If you were able to successfully claim it, you would have gotten a DM.

This is pretty cool.

I made a post about an hour ago and I needed to edit a word but I got a message I can't edit my post in a giveaway so I was a bit confused (it was the thread about someone's cat having diabetes), not sure if maybe that was a glitch or something.

Yeah, that was a bug.

A few caveats on this feature as it works now:

• You can't make a giveaway post by itself. You have to add some text to the post in addition to your giveaway.
• You can't edit posts that contain giveaways as that could potentially mess up the giveaway code in the database (the bug earlier was blocking ALL edits, not just those with the KEY tag, sorry!)

Is there a way for they key to be used multiple times, like for example the PS beta software keys being able to be redeemed 5 times?

Or would it be a case of just creating multiple key codes in a post?

I think you'd be okay if you made 5 separate posts with the same key. I'll see about adjusting it to let people post the same key multiple times (the system assumes now that each key / post pairing is unique) or better yet maybe an option to set how many people can click on it to get the same key.

It wouldn't come up very often, so its not a massive deal, but for things like that, it'd be nice

To gift? You select the game you want to buy, add it to cart, and while in your cart you click a drop down beneath the game and select 'This is a gift', and then choose the recipient. You can only gift to your friends on Steam, the code won't be shared with you directly.

It happened to me, I don't think it's a bug. You can edit it after the code has been claimed.

It happened to me, I don't think it's a bug. You can edit it after the code has been claimed.

Nice feature but there's a flaw though, if you quote someone when the key is still available you get the key in the quote, thus you can steal the key without clicking the button.

I guess if you receive the new posts by email you get the keys too ? (I never tries to receive new post notifications by email)

The code you're seeing here isn't the actual key code that the user entered, but the claim code the system uses to programmatically retrieve the key when it determines you've met the other criteria for redemption.

I see the actual key code if I reply to post #16 (looks like a Steam key but not tagged as a Steam Key) but I see the encoded version on post #36.

I think I see the issue, and yes that's a bug. Looks like they added the title of the game without wrapping it in quotes. I'll update the code to account for that, thanks for pointing it out.
