Updated 02/05/2021

So here is a new bunch of rumors for GTA VI:
  • The next GTA title has been in development since 2012 (1 year before GTA 5 launched). Production didn't actually pick up properly until mid 2015. Even then it was on ice while the teams focused on RDR2.
  • Chapter system similar RDR2, first 2 chapters are set in the late 1970s
  • Ray tracing for reflection and shadow (not for lighting)
  • PS5 & XBOX are the priority, PC version at a later date
  • You can NOT enter every building
  • It's another Rockstar Worldwide Production, not just one or two studios, but all.
  • Codename is PROJECT AMERICAS.
  • Set in both Vice City and a new fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro, with some linear missions taking place in Liberty City (not open world), think Ludendorff in GTAV. Also been recently hearing about Cuba but I ain’t sure?
  • Game will balance realism and arcade. WON'T be as realistic as RDR2.
  • One playable protagonist this time. Male, not female, despite supposed leaks.
  • Set in 1970s-1980s.
  • The name of the protagonist is a spoiler in itself which can potentially spoil the narrative and the leaker also said beware of future leakers who might spoil the name of the protagonist.
  • You play as an up and coming drug lord-wannabe named "Ricardo". Another key character called “Kacey” is a part of the narrative. You start off as a grunt doing runs as a cocaine smuggler from Vice City to the new large South American area before making connections with big time drug lords and making your way up. Multiple cities. There will also be a GIANT prison which will play a part in the game.
  • Will feature a “CHAPTER” system similar to a Tarantino flick or RDR2.
  • Weather is a heavy focus. Hurricanes, floods, etc.
  • One thing to note is that when someone asked to leak something very specific which can be used to see the credibility of the leak in the future, the leaker says, "You meet Ken Rosenberg and he mentions Tommy Vercetti several times although you never actually meet Tommy."
  • Buildings change over the eras, vehicles too. This causes headaches apparently but they managed to nail a pipeline and get it working. So older, rare classic cars get more expensive as time progresses etc. Full economy. Next level.
  • HEAVILY inspired by Netflix's Narcos.
  • The leaker claims that it is the best story ever put in a GTA game but not quite emotional as RDR2
  • They want to have an incredible 70s/80s soundtrack, but jury is still out on that one.
  • A younger Martin Madrazo will make an appearance as will his father who is a big drug lord at the time. You do some missions for the Madrazo family involving hits on other gangs.
  • Drug empire building is a mechanic similar to Vice City Stories but bigger. MUCH bigger. Think the GTAOnline system and dial it up to 10. There you have it.
  • The mission structure is supposed to be quite free.
  • You can only have weapons on your person. No arsenal in your back pocket. Think RDR2 and Max Payne 3.
  • Your personal vehicle (similar to GTA5 but can now change it) will be like your horse saddle in RDR2. All your equipment is stored in the trunk. Similar to LA Noire. You also store your body armour in the car. If you wear it, it appears, no longer just an invisible thing lol.
  • The example of the improved AI design according to the leaker was "You may see NPCs beeping their horn and driving aggressively around other drivers because they're late for work."
  • There will be tons of subtitle reading. Think Max Payne 3 amounts. Because the characters speak the language they're native to. Very immersive. Like watching an episode of Narcos. Whenever you're in South America, don't expect to hear much English. Vice City however is a mix of everything. Mostly English though.
  • Last bit of narrative info, it will discuss topics such as HIV and the immigration crisis of the time. A fictional version of Fidel Castro etc.
  • Minigames include Surfing, Windsurfing and Roller Derby
  • Next Gen only. Not PS4/XB1.
  • Game is now their primary focus, alongside another title (which I believe to be Bully 2).
  • Game is still in Pre-Alpha so names, locations, details could and probably will change.
  • Late 2023

The interisting thing is this: The leaker claims that Dan Houser left because he exhausted himself after RDR2 crunch, could return in the future.

Source (Reddit):
"I have two friends who are very reliable and have worked for places such as Kotaku and PC Gamer. They relayed this information to me. I also have a very dear friend who works for Rockstar, he won’t confirm the details, but he won’t deny them either. Normally, if something is not true, he’ll flat out deny, but here he just laughed and said “you know I can’t talk about that stuff bro” "

I can't say I like this at all. I want something set in modern day. With today's political climate, they could've really had some fun with the talk radio stations, I mean GTAV's talk radio stations were epic. I really don't want 70s and 80s or South America with a bunch of Spanish even though I understand Spanish fine, It's just not what I want from GTA. I want more heists and bank jobs, not cartel stuff. I may wait til bargain bin this time around if this leak pans out.

Ugh just the thought of ugly 70s and 80s cars is "triggering " me.

We just had 2 GTAs set in modern day. The series desperately needed a return to Vice City and the time period that goes along with it. Vice City had the best story, music, and radio from the PS2 trilogy. People dismissing the awesome setting as what's described in the OP triggers me even more, because it's been far too long.

edit: ugly 70's and 80's cars, jesus some people have no taste.

I'm suspicious of this rumor for multiple reasons, the biggest being downgrading the amount of weapons on your person for realism. On the other hand, I hope the part about there being a single protagonist again is true. I thought GTA V had the worst story in the series as it focused on too many narratives.

Once again, RDR2, is not realistic. So not being the same level of realistic as RDR2 doesn't give me much of a gauge to know what they're going for. Especially when one of the only "realistic" aspects it featured, like a limited inventory seem to be in.

Anyway, I don't care about the rumored setting, I want to know if they'll carry over the unintuitive controller and UI layouts and the broken ass crime/witness/bounty system from RDR2.

I'm most concerned whether they'll address input lag, combat encounter design and their patented magical radar/GPS Follow-The-Yellow-Brick-Road-or-Fail mission design.

Also I want to know if there will be any interesting ways to interact and influence the open world or if it will again just be a pretty backdrop where we run into random Rockstar Exec personalities that lead to ever more linear as fuck missions.

These are just a few of my worries on top of implementation of basic ass mechanics like fast travel, weapon switching, inventory management and other things that I had no concern of before RDR2 released, but now do.

This sounds like the last GTA rumor with some additional notes after playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and watching some television. To be honest, I don't remember any GTA rumors that ended up being true and it's only natural to expect an HD era/next-gen Vice City.

I was disappointed that GTA V didn't have as much content and residential/business interiors as GTA: San Andreas. It feels like newer games are offering less to do, see and interact with. Even worse if they really are going to get rid of the weapon wheel.

When Vice City released I had never been to Miami. Now I've lived on Brickell Key/downtown for over a decade. Should be fun to see how they do the city, even though it's "Vice City" and not Miami proper.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next GTA is set in the past. I mean, they can't do a futuristic GTA because it would undoubtedly be compared to CP 2077.

If the rumors are true, I don't think the game will sell as well as GTA5. A lot of people like GTA5 because it's based in Los Angeles and happens in the current time. Guess one could say that GTA becomes a victim of its own success. It will sell like crazy, but not GTA5 crazy.

So, a PC version will come out as a "remastered version" when PS6/Xbox Three arrive, I presume.

Could be interesting if true. I don't think there would be much benefit to doing a contemporary Vice City, so retro makes sense.

They wouldn't do a futuristic GTA because they said in the past that they weren't interested. GTA 2 is still the closest we have to a game like that and it's more retrofuturism.
Hoping it's in the 80s rather than the 70s. 80s is the best decade.
I wouldn't mind seeing a new GTA game set in the 1970s just because it'd be something new and different. I think the Driver series was set during the late 1970s and I liked how old it looked.

Similar reason that I liked GTA: Vice City as it was set during the 1980s but the time period is played out, in my opinion.
