New GTA VI rumors: Both Vice City & Rio de Janeiro, Set in 1970s-1980s and more

Because they can. Never underestimate the amount of time and effort trolls will invest in their craft. Remember the guy who designed, modeled and 3D-printed his own Switch prototype?
Hmm, you are right. Pathetic fools. But let's hope this rumor is true, sounds good.

This really sounds horrible. They're trying to make it all serious apparently. GTA has never taken itself seriously. It's meant to mock modern day Americana. Waiting 7 or 8 years to get this is very disappointing to say the least. I'm not opposed to the idea of a game like this though. The could just make a new franchise for it and leave GTA to do what it does.

I assuming most of this is true, since GTA6 leaks have been saying the same things for almost 2 years now. I cannot wait to get back to the 80s. I hope they don't overcomplicate the gameplay systems though. GTAV was a nice middle ground, I feel. I'm also hoping one of these GTAs lets us use a create-a-character. Doesn't sound like this one will though.

I don't know, it sounds great to me. I am willing to bet there will be plenty of satire even with a more serious tone. I loved RDR 2 though and that one has been pretty divisive.

One of my favorite game mechanics was the property system in Vice City. Buying the Car Dealership and doing the missions to unlock all the cars was so fun and it was never really revisited. I hope for some good side business opportunities like that again.

but this time with latino gangbangers.

The latest leak sounds far more interesting than the OP leak. Also sounds like a more likely possibility. I mean, Brazil had nothing to do with the drug wars of the 80's, and Madrazo, a Mexican drug kingpin, somehow involved in the Vice City/Brazilian crime scene...made no sense.

Rockstar is targeting a specific month of release more than 2.5 years before the game's launch? And a white male protagonist? Year right.

All i wanted was Vice City and the 80's. Now can they top Vice Citys soundtrack?, that will be tough.

Lots of great brazilain music from the 70`s.... at least on the "minorities" radio it had potention to tops it.... but doubt those rumors are true.... >(

As a brazilian, seeing 80's Rio de Janeiro recreated by Rockstar would be a blast

Max Payne 3 version of São Paulo (city that I live in) was already amazing (I have to make a thread about it sometime)

Sounds a little too good to be true, but we will see

Many "leaks" about GTA Vi out there, all of them being different from each other, so who knows

Was thinking about making it on Era before getting banned

Sadly, dont think that threads like these generate discussion in here.

You dont see many threads of people dissecting games. The one that generate buzz are the ones about console wars and etc.

But I'll make it anyway, as soon as I finish my annual playthrough of the game

Updated 02/04/2021

So here is a new bunch of rumors for GTA VI:
  • The next GTA title has been in development since 2012 (1 year before GTA 5 launched). Production didn't actually pick up properly until mid 2015. Even then it was on ice while the teams focused on RDR2.
  • Chapter system similar RDR2, first 2 chapters are set in the late 1970s
  • It's another Rockstar Worldwide Production, not just one or two studios, but all.
  • Codename is PROJECT AMERICAS.
  • Set in both Vice City and a new fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro, with some linear missions taking place in Liberty City (not open world), think Ludendorff in GTAV. Also been recently hearing about Cuba but I ain’t sure?
  • Game will balance realism and arcade. WON'T be as realistic as RDR2.
  • One playable protagonist this time. Male, not female, despite supposed leaks.
  • Set in 1970s-1980s.
  • The name of the protagonist is a spoiler in itself which can potentially spoil the narrative and the leaker also said beware of future leakers who might spoil the name of the protagonist.
  • You play as an up and coming drug lord-wannabe named "Ricardo". Another key character called “Kacey” is a part of the narrative. You start off as a grunt doing runs as a cocaine smuggler from Vice City to the new large South American area before making connections with big time drug lords and making your way up. Multiple cities. There will also be a GIANT prison which will play a part in the game.
  • Will feature a “CHAPTER” system similar to a Tarantino flick or RDR2.
  • Weather is a heavy focus. Hurricanes, floods, etc.
  • One thing to note is that when someone asked to leak something very specific which can be used to see the credibility of the leak in the future, the leaker says, "You meet Ken Rosenberg and he mentions Tommy Vercetti several times although you never actually meet Tommy."
  • Buildings change over the eras, vehicles too. This causes headaches apparently but they managed to nail a pipeline and get it working. So older, rare classic cars get more expensive as time progresses etc. Full economy. Next level.
  • HEAVILY inspired by Netflix's Narcos.
  • The leaker claims that it is the best story ever put in a GTA game but not quite emotional as RDR2
  • They want to have an incredible 70s/80s soundtrack, but jury is still out on that one.
  • A younger Martin Madrazo will make an appearance as will his father who is a big drug lord at the time. You do some missions for the Madrazo family involving hits on other gangs.
  • Drug empire building is a mechanic similar to Vice City Stories but bigger. MUCH bigger. Think the GTAOnline system and dial it up to 10. There you have it.
  • The mission structure is supposed to be quite free.
  • You can only have weapons on your person. No arsenal in your back pocket. Think RDR2 and Max Payne 3.
  • Your personal vehicle (similar to GTA5 but can now change it) will be like your horse saddle in RDR2. All your equipment is stored in the trunk. Similar to LA Noire. You also store your body armour in the car. If you wear it, it appears, no longer just an invisible thing lol.
  • The example of the improved AI design according to the leaker was "You may see NPCs beeping their horn and driving aggressively around other drivers because they're late for work."
  • There will be tons of subtitle reading. Think Max Payne 3 amounts. Because the characters speak the language they're native to. Very immersive. Like watching an episode of Narcos. Whenever you're in South America, don't expect to hear much English. Vice City however is a mix of everything. Mostly English though.
  • Last bit of narrative info, it will discuss topics such as HIV and the immigration crisis of the time. A fictional version of Fidel Castro etc.
  • Minigames include Surfing, Windsurfing and Roller Derby
  • Next Gen only. Not PS4/XB1.
  • Game is now their primary focus, alongside another title (which I believe to be Bully 2).
  • Game is still in Pre-Alpha so names, locations, details could and probably will change.
  • Late 2023

The interisting thing is this: The leaker claims that Dan Houser left because he exhausted himself after RDR2 crunch, could return in the future.

And more here: Reddit

All of this seems really plausible and still consistent with the ongoing rumors over the last few years. I would definitely play this.

all that is music to my ears other than a two and a half year wait. Crazy dynamic weather systems like hurricanes would be fucking amazing but I'm expecting that to be a scripted segment. Improved AI and damage was also on my wish list. Hope this isn't a larp.

Just add "[DF] Xbox Series X vs PS5" in the thread title and fanboys will be forced to click on it!

The 70s setting has got me thinking, if this is true. Agent was supposed to be set in 1970s as well, and that game is presumed to be cancelled so I'm wondering if they merged some of the concepts they had in mind for Agent and integrated them into the new GTA under development?

60 hour story?!
Fuck that. rdr2 was already way too long and it was 50
Yeah, but you spent like 10 hours trudging around in your camp. Loved the story, but the gameplay made that game feel too long. The story being long seemed to have worked out because it was really impactful.

I want to do lots of cavalinhos de pau in my opalão hearing Roberto Carlos. Will be the best GTA!

But seriously, if there is something Brazil can do well is music. Or at least knew in the past, lets be honest. Hope the rumor is true and there is a Bossa Nova radio.

We just had 2 GTAs set in modern day. The series desperately needed a return to Vice City and the time period that goes along with it. Vice City had the best story, music, and radio from the PS2 trilogy. People dismissing the awesome setting as what's described in the OP triggers me even more, because it's been far too long.

edit: ugly 70's and 80's cars, jesus some people have no taste.
Eh, but the mechanics that came with modern day, and in combination with the current tech...is hard to step back from IMO.

Ill personally miss the internet in general that the modern GTAs brought, looking at the emails and texts from other characters added to the continuity you experienced with the characters...especially in IV. I also was one of the few that appreciated the additional dialogue that the hangouts provided, just made things seem more like i was living that characters life.

I feel that the character/world continuity might lack when you take out cell phones and the internet imo.

Im excited to see how Liberty City looks with modern tech, i honestly wish they somehow incorporated a modern tech look at Las Venturas, as Brazil doesnt interest me...at all for GTA.

And i wish it was modern Liberty City we were looking at.

Sounds too good to be true.

Would love if so. Vice City was peak GTA for me, I'll be honest. Just love that 80's vibe.

I can't say I like this at all. I want something set in modern day. With today's political climate, they could've really had some fun with the talk radio stations, I mean GTAV's talk radio stations were epic. I really don't want 70s and 80s or South America with a bunch of Spanish even though I understand Spanish fine, It's just not what I want from GTA. I want more heists and bank jobs, not cartel stuff. I may wait til bargain bin this time around if this leak pans out.

Ugh just the thought of ugly 70s and 80s cars is "triggering " me.

Wha.. some of the most iconic cars are from the 80's !

Just some of the 80's ferraritas alone are worth making the game for > https://www.hotcars.com/ferraris-80s-best-finest/

Oh I should have looked at the dates..

I always found the cellphone and internet stuff to be a neat idea but was too cumbersome in execution and ended up being something I mostly ignored. Too many phonecalls/texts/emails gets annoying and overwhelming too. To each their own.

Are you talking about 5...or 4?

Because in 4 you just went to the internet cafe, and checked the emails, go on the dating sites and read the bios and even set up a date. Among all the other sites, Spending time on these sites were hilarious and cool, even immersive. and only added to the game, to where going back in time without it will seem like a step back. Like....none of that stuff anymore? Yikes. Takes a bit of added soul out of it imo

It'll be like red dead where that added character relationship and continuity is completely gone, and its just side activities and main missions.

The rumor mill for Rockstar games has been very active lately.
Although it sounds too specific to be true for something that is at least 2 years away from even being announced.

That being said, I do like the sound of the rumored settings. What I really need to see with my own eyes are the level of interaction and physics, the density of the map(s), the improvements in AI, and mission structure.
When it comes to GTA settings, and I don't have any particular preferences. I want to see how Rockstar have grown since their work on RDR2 and what that looks like for a new AAA GTA title.

Best thing about this, is that there's a good chance this won't be another cross-gen GTA like GTA V was. PC, PS5, XBSX, & XBSS is more than enough.

Hard to believe that a giant game as GTAVI is planned to late 2023 while being in pre-alpha now. Obviosly can be true and to get delayed and to put as in almost every AAA game tons of crunch. But I'll take it with tons of grains of salt.

mostly talking about 5. The internet cafes were alright in 4 at least I didn't have a million notifications on the phone all the time that had clumsy sub menus on sub menus to navigate. I guess for something like a new game set in the past it'll depend on how they handle the social element of the game. if there are more meaningful interactions with characters in the open world I will prefer it to cellphones and the internet. in fact the removal of those things will probably incentivise the devs to add more dynamic and in depth free roam encounters to the game

No time to look over the details but Brazil could potentially give Max Payne 3 vibes.

Would love 70s and 80s too.

I have to say it, this is the most disappointing leak ever regarding Gta VI and this makes me it's the only true one, very, very sad

The protagonist itself sounds boring and clichè as hell, italian raised in America - i'm italian btw lol -, and Florida? Vice City? Mafia? Yawn.

After Gta V's trio, I'd expected at least a duo of characters, potential about a male / female duo a là Bonnie and Clyde would have been insane for example, and for once i'd have liked a lot to play as a protagonist of any nationality other than italian american, african american, or american ( apart from Hwang, Niko and Luis, brief exceptions )

A pure spanish, mexican, english, french, or south american, cuban, brazilian, costarican one, or german?
Also, I fear the map will be Vice City + a very large and boring collection of empty hills and such

Why not Portland, Detroit, Chicago for example?

The only interesting thing about the character is his origin, sounds like the real main character could be the son of a significant gta character of '70-80's game
What if we never meet Tommy Vercetti because WE are Tommy Vercetti, then he dies and we play as his son?

Vercetti is an italian second name, I don't remember if Tommy has italian origins?

Or, way more likely, the protagonist is the son of a gta mafia boss of high placed member, Leone or Forelli maybe? Or Cipriani
