New Hellboy Movie Coming

Strange then that Hellboy existed long before GDT's film.

Del Toro was 0 for 2 on successfully translating the tone and atmosphere of Mike Mignola's work to the screen. Time to let someone else give it a go.

Sure, but they were actually good movies which 9 out of 10 times still isn't the case with comic book adaptations.

Was Del Toro denied funding for Hellboy 3? And yet, they're allowing a reboot with an R rating? That's a bit messed up if so.

I wouldn't be suprised if Del Toro's busy scheduled factored into the decision. Plus budget. Scaling back from a trilogy finisher to a back to basics film probably makes more sense to them.

Honestly, people who don't know the source material going "no del Toro no buy" are like people thinking Raimi's Spiderman was perfect and further adaptations would be unnecessary. And that is such a weird prospect.

True. I personally don't think they need to reboot his origin at all, but yeah the Del Toro films were hardly sacred adaptations imo.

I'd love a genuine BPRD film series spinoff too.

Lol, I don't even think his character exists in the comics.

Someone called him on his attempt to criticize the guy who created the character and he responded "Those guys MADE that franchise."

I'm beginning to wonder if he even knew it was based on a comic book. Like, maybe he thought Mike was just a producer or something.

I don't really care about how faithful it is to the source material if we still get good adaptation out of it

But man the hellboy movies were just not at all what I wanted. How a man who in the past has made some great horror fantasy; and he has so much influence too from the type of works that Mignola pulls from to boot. I don't get how he ended up putting out these goofy movies. And even the production design, while it was immaculate, left much to be desired. It wasn't nearly as dark and Gothic as it should have looked. Even overlooking all that they were just not very good imo. Damn shame how spotty his English movies tend to be.

I hope Neil Marshall leans heavily on the horror side of things. Dog Soldiers and Descent were a while ago but it gives me faith

I would guess that part of the "sanitizing" del Toro done was necessary for the movies to be approved in the first place, and now the zeitgeist is just different.

Kinda feel like Pacific Rim was the same thing. I think Del Toro's PG13 flicks just feel like violent PG cartoons.

Where did you see this? Love Tambor and Del Toro, but damn son. What a silly thing to say.

Pretty silly.

Screenwriter Andrew Cosby on the tone
“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy. Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.”

Hellboy 2 had the "we're not different" villain style that balde 2 had. Would have been interested more in a new director but still having Perlman.

So..."Rise of the Blood Queen". We do already have a Queen of Blood from the comics, which means the movie could be adapting "The Wild Hunt" story arc.

I can see that, it doesn't take much to make that arc standalone, and yet still approachable what with all the Arthurian stuff in it.

I can't believe I only just saw this, now I can't wait. As much as I like Del Toro's movies, I would love something closer to the comics, especially in tone and character.

I was somewhat under the impression that this movie would take ages to get going.
Seems like Pre-Production is already knee deep though?

And the poster suggests 2018? Woah! This feels very rushed for what should have quite a bit of CGI in it.

Wow they are really moving fast on this thing. I hope its cool. I want it to be like an 80s movie dark and scary but also some memorable lines and weirdness to it.

This is going to be a different take.

I love Del Torro. But at this point in their careers. Neil Marshal is fucking awesome.

Its been a while since he did something really good, or anything at all outside of TV.

But Doomsday is a genre classic. This movie could be amazing. R rated Hellboy by Neil Marshall? Nay, not could, will be amazing.

This movie is going to be amazing. Mark my words.

Interesting choice. I can't quite imagine it because Jon Hurt was Broom in a very fatherly memorable way but McShane is a damn good actor so I'm sure he'll be great.

Since they're going with the comics, I can see it 'cus he's not really Hellboy's dad like he is in the movies. I mean, he cares about him a lot, but he's more like a mentor than a dad.

[edit]

Visually, though, John Hurt was perfect and he nailed that father figure role Del Toro was going for.

I love Hellboy but I would never have predicted that it would be popular enough to spawn multiple film adaptations from different filmmakers even. Eh, but I don't like the casting of McShane for Broom.

It's not that popular. Just a cool comic to adapt. And anything with a pulse when it comes to comics can be adapted.

Niel Marshal isn't a CG type guy, so I wonder what this will look like. Is Hellboy going to be part CG? I guess CG has gotten to the point where I shouldn't be hating.

Hurt looked like the comic panel come to life, but honestly, Bruttenholm could be played by any academic-looking old guy.

I doubt he'll have that significant a role in the film. Significant to the mythos, of course, but I doubt they'll be retreading the warm, fatherly take on the character GDT invented.
