New Hellboy Movie Coming

Aren't they both really up for doing it as well? This is an insane reboot to do.

Think I remember the same. There was the petition Del Toro asked people to sign so he could show that there was a interest in a Hellboy 3. Think he mentioned Perlman was on it. Then he later came back and said it wasn't gonna happen.

This seems to be why.

:(

David Harbour sounds like a good choice, but they're going to CG him to hell and back (pun intended). Hard to comment on the director, but R rating is a plus in my book.

del toro hinted on it after he spoke with mignola and perlman.

"Hellboy may move into a different direction. heartbroken- but, not up to me. I, for one, wish everyone involved the best of luck!"

Reddit says that Del Toro and Mignola haven't seen eye to eye when it comes to Hellboy, anyone ever heard of about this? Something about Del Toro using the property to tell his own stories and not adapt the comics. If that's the case, then I can see why Mignola went for a reboot and why it seems he is doing an adaption of the final Hellboy arc.

A more faithful adaptation of the comic books would be nice.

Ideally in the form of a Bryan Fuller-directed TV series though.

Perlman looked the part, but I think he portrayed Hellboy a bit too much as a big dumb brute rather than the more introspective Hellboy of the (especially later) comics.

I would also like a Baltimore adaptation please.

I remember reading an interview with Mignola that gives off that sentiment, and that was around the release of the first movie.
And considering The Golden Army was totally an original story, I wouldn't be surprised he'd be somewhat bitter about it.

Mixed feelings on this, just because Ron Perlman is just awesome as Hellboy, so seeing someone else in the role will be a little strange but with Hellboy 3 not happening now, I'm happy to see a new R rated Hellboy movie, hopefully this turns out to be decent.

No del Toro, no Perlman, no thank you.

On the other hand, with GDT not attached to the project anymore, this film's chances of actually happening rise exponentially. Hmmm...

I'm genuinely torn by this. Hellboy was Del Toro's baby. I like Neill Marshall a whole bunch and David Harbour is strangely good casting but I don't know man. I just don't know.

Uh, you should count your blessings.

Neil Marshall is a fantastic director that can make a small independent film look like a blockbuster, has a great eye for fantasy and is a fan of the original material. Dog Soldiers managed to be both hilarious and scary at the same time, The Descent is one of the scariest, most claustrophobic films of the 00's and the much maligned, greatly misunderstood Doomsday was a veritable love letter to all things nerdy. His Game of Thrones episodes always rank along the very best of TV and he also directed Hannibal's The Great Red Dragon. He has proven his chops and we know he's not afraid of violence. At all. He's a fantastic pick for Hellboy.

Let's get real here: Del Toro's Hellboy was gorgeous but not very close to the books and it's not like the films made a ton of money. Plus, Perlman is getting old. Marshall and David Harbour are not only great talent, but way above the very best Hellboy fans could ever wish for given the circumstances.

Since this is a Neil Marshall gig, it'll be made on time, it'll be made on budget and it'll be every bit as gritty (and funny) as the comics. But well above everything else, it'll be made.

"But it's not Del Toro!"

Bitches, Dog Soldiers is the best B.P.R.D. story that Mike Mignola never wrote. Go watch it and report back.

Edit: Go in blind and skip the trailer. It's hideously early 00's and spoilerific.

Am I not allowed to express disappointment purely for the fact that we're not getting the final film in the Del Toro's planned movie trilogy, given the first two films are extremely near and dear to my heart and that I was really hoping for a capper for that particular story?

Like, it's great they've got some solid talent in for the reboot and I don't resent them for doing something new with the character, but it's kind of inconsequential to me as someone who just wanted a conclusion to an obviously incomplete story, especially the nature of Golden Army's ending.

It's fine to be upset, but fans of the comics should be glad they are getting a new film at all, let alone one with some potential.

If they cast Jim Parsons as Abe Sapien I'm going to kill myself.
This kind of makes sense in my head and now I feel bad about it.

As a massive hellboy fan this feels me with happiness. I'll miss del toro and Perlman greatly but I'm not willing to shut this down right away. The director and lead have huge potential.

Edit: hey Ed Boon - now is the time you know what to do.

10/10 post. Agreed on everything, especially Doomsday. That film was such a fun time.

You seem to be implying so, given that you seem to be chastising me for being unhappy with this announcement and giving me a lecture in regards to how happy I should be in regards to the new talent they're getting in for this project....despite the fact that said talent has nothing to do with why I'm bummed about this decision.

If anyone was going to be cast as a demon with a giant fist that punches Nazi's I'm glad it was David Harbour.

I don't know, first Hellboy was only decent, second one was horrible, couldn't even finish it.

I won't miss Del Toro on this, let's have another take on the franchise.

Uh, I took your macro as a diss towards the new team (which I found odd, since Del Toro didn't quite get Hellboy anyway).

Nevermind.

If anyone was going to be cast as a demon with a giant fist that punches Nazi's I'm glad it was David Harbour.

Not just nazis, but nazi monkeys.

It's not the movies that are the problem, it's a boring, lame IP filled with boring, lame characters and a boring, lame story.

And fans, like those of the Cornetto Trilogy, that never shut up about how "awesome and funny and amazing" these films are.
You just have terrible taste.

I wasn't a big fan of Dog Soldiers, but i agree with all the rest, plus Centurion was a bad ass movie, with a great cast.

No Del Toro? Yeah.... How about no...
I mean, tell me he's at least helping with the monsters and design?

Mignola can help with the monster design, tho.

This is like waiting years for Half-Life 3, only to be told a reboot is coming instead that wipes the slate clean.

The first two Hellboy movies are SO good, but sadly the story is clearly unfinished.

I'd rather they start over with something that's actually close to the comics tbh.

I'm not as slavishly to the source material.

Hell, most comic movies aren't. Guardians of the Galaxy is quite different than the comics. Ant-Man is much different. X-men hasn't really seen a single comic-faithful adaptation in nearly two decades. The best Batman movies had massive changes from the comics.

Source material is overrated. It's great as a launching point, but if I want those old stories, I have them to read.

For the movie universe though, it's an incomplete hole that was astoundingly good for what it was. I rewatch them often and they still hold up strongly, and both Del Toro and Perlman really embraced it. I still smile at Perlman dressing up as Hellboy to visit sick kids.

no del toro... hmm, ok.
no pearlman??? Well he is old now but still. Have to see the new guy in mask to judge.

It really has to be different. Don't know how, del toros HB 1&2 had a special atmosphere.

Already can see the casting of Liz Sherman beeing Cara Delevingne.

Del Toro's movies weren't great takes on the source material and really not very good films on their own.

Perlman was good at delivering what Del Toro wanted, but the dumb, impulsive version of Hellboy isn't really that much like the real comic Hellboy. Del Toro took a few elements of Hellboy and made those all that character was and was about.

GDT had a very simple and shallow take on a character and world that Mignola has only made more and more rich and interesting over the years.

Marshall and Harbour are very good talents and honestly a better fit for an adaption that gets the comics, particularly the later work.

I really wanted a finale with Ron Perlman :/ surely they could have done an R rated soft reboot as a finale and then just James Bonded the character in a few years. We don't need this now.

This. The comics have this weird, dark atmosphere where you can almost hear how utterly quiet many scenes are, only to burst into this insane energy that's more like Evil Dead movies than the cutesy blockbuster style in the movies so far. In many of the stories Hellboy's not a funny, dumb jokester but a stoic sufferer who just eases the mood with needed gallows humor. The short stories are especially good with all the folklore and casual occultism.

I'd love it if Marshal could harness that high-contrast with style lots of darkness filling the image in the movie.

Conqueror Worm would've been a nice choice, especially since it samples everything that makes the book what it is. Nazis, Lovecraft, Giant Robotic Ape, the BPRD, that Anung Un Rama stuff, even Lobster Johnson.

It even works as the beginning of a new Hellboy movie series, too. Just end the movie with Hellboy quitting the BPRD and going off into the world on his own like in the books. From there, you can do pretty much anything.
Conqueror Worm would be perfect but I think the production may fear it's too close to the del Toro movies and want to make the reboot clear to audiences. Maybe?

For someone interested in getting into the comics, where do i start?
Here.

I do not understand how either of those garbage movies warrant a sequel. Hellboy fucking sucks.

Hellboy in MK feels like such a monkey paw wish for a Hellboy videogame...

Gimme some of dat Baba Yaga shit.

I'd honestly love a Hellboy movie that was done like anthology. Three separate distinct Hellboy stories with an overarching narrative to tie them together. One could be dark and horror focused, one could be a tragedy, and the other could be weird and goofy while still grim. Then you get the entire spread of what the Hellboy comics were like.
