New M83 song "Do It, Try It"

As a long time Daft Punk fan since Homework, I think it is. Never have I felt so disappointed in an album like I did with RAM. And the writing was on the wall when the first song leaked, could not believe my ears. I even remember speculation on GAF that since it was just the radio single, it was vastly different and what would be on the album would be closer in line to trademark Daft Punk.

RAM felt like the type of album an artist puts out to fill a contract obligation. It was Daft Punk and Friends, not Daft Punk.

Maybe not to you're liking and certainly not to my full expectations but it was far from Horrible. That seems hyperbolic. Mind you it took me a while to get use to it but as i kept going it grew on me in a big way. Really good stuff on that album, but to discredit it completely is not right to be honest. Plus if anyone thinks that RAM wasn't the "Hey, guys. Were old as shit, we more then paid are dues and really want that Grammy" send off then i don't understand how folks missed that. They pretty much said that from the beginning with how they talked about the album and its direction. It was a homage.

Again to me Horrible is not the word, mediocre or not the old Daft Punk i understand but. When has a band from that era come back and captured that magic like before or even wanted to in the first place.

Shit people said about the same thing when it came to Plastic Beach and it still makes no sense to me.

Not feeling the album at all. I actually think the comparisons are dead on to Daft Punk. This sounds like M83's version of RAM. A departure that is either a hit or miss for people. For me, it's a complete miss.

If I wanted to listen to Air, I would listen to Air. Not a cheap sounding knock off, which is what Junk comes off as for me. Such a shame too, because I really liked the direction M83 was going after Saturdays.

about to start the album right now, this is actually the first comparison ive heard to air. I like air a lot, actually, but I wouldn't say DITI gave me that vibe. I've never really listened to Daft Punk so that comparison would be lost on me. Here goes!

edit: already really enjoying 'Go!'. I'm a sucker for 80s vibe stuff and have been on a New Retro Wave kick for a while now, so this is right up my alley. If the rest of the album is similar then I'll be satisfied.
Edit 2: walkway blues is fantastic too. man, this is blowing away my expectations already and I'm stoked about it.

halfway through now. I like it more than i initially expected, but so far I'd say I only loved about 3 of the tracks. on the wizard now.
edit:finished it. solid album, probably similar % of songs that were good as HUWD. liked about half a lot, and the other half were fine but I'd probably skip. the ones that hit were great though. If I had to give it a number I'd say 7.5. Definitely was some 'air' similarities at some points for sure.

The biggest issue I have is that somehow he managed to make Susanne Sundfor sound boring. She had a critically acclaim album last year that was anything but.

Finally getting a chance to listen to the full album now.

Damn it Don'tBeWeird, you weren't kidding. Walkaway Blues is incredible.

I've been listening to this all day and I can easily say this is my album of the year so far. The album is just so upbeat and fun with some interesting stuff going on. The whole album as a package is really solid.

Best track:
Walkway Blues

Least favourite track:
Tension

Listened to a few songs and they're all rubbish. This is not the M83 I know and l love. Before the Dawn Heals Us, Digital Shades vol 1, Saturdays=Youth and the Oblivion soundtrack were excellent albums. BtDHU is actually one of my favorite albums ever.

This is hot garbage that I won't ever listen too again.

I haven't listened yet, and I'm with you on Before the Dawn being up there for my all-time albums list. But I liked Do It, Try It a lot, so I'm curious as to what this sounds like.

Only like a few tracks including "Go!" and "Walkaway Blues" -- will revisit another time to see if it sparks my interest in the future.

I wish I liked this record more but I'm just not feeling it aside from a couple songs. I've loved the progression of the last three records and I guess this doesn't feel like the evolution I expected. I anticipated M83 to go bigger and wider instead of this more paired down, restricted sort of release. It's not awful but I'm just not feeling it.

I'll put it back on later and see how I feel about it, but first couple listens I'm not sold on it.

RAM is the Daft album that got the least amount of play from me. Like two-three full listens. It just felt disappointing.

Gave the whole thing a listen, totally not sticking.

Disappointed with the direction of this album, will skip this one and wait for the next release.

*goes back to listening to GUNSHIP*

Such an unintentionally ironic and poorly written review.

He criticizes the record on the notion of it being purely for Gonzalez and not for fans, whilst not realizing he in turn, as a fan, has defined the band to a very specific sound and then penalized them for deviating from this very personal interpretation of that sound.

Yeah, I vehemently disagree that the previous albums were somehow for everyone while this album is just for himself. And I don't agree that "solid pop exercises" are somehow less worthy than anything else.

This album is not for the same people. It is probably not for people who have never heard Bacharach horns or a Stevie Wonder guest harmonica solo.

Review is on point about the songs, especially the Beck track. Really underused his vocal talents. The back half of the album sounds generic and by the numbers and not the kind of quality I expect from Gonzalez.

And the album does feel very personal but the scope in production and sound are scaled back dramatically. Tracks like The Wizard, despite sounding like a chillwave infused track from latest Neon Indian that is building to something greater, goes nowhere.

Parts of this album remind of a Go! Team album with the way its reverential of pop nostalgia. The only reason I'm hesitant to call it "great" off the bat is because it's very very scattershot. There are some total bangers on it tho. Walkway Blues and Lazer Gun are great. Road Blaster is immediately my favorite. The Wizard is very disappointing in that the final minute, after the haze and distortion clears up it reveals what would have been the backdrop for an amazing track. I dunno I kind of feel the same way about it that I do most M83 albums where somewhere between 4-6 tracks on the album are amazing and strike a tonal balance that kind of defines the album and then there's a lot of filler to go with it. Even my favorite M83 albums suffer from this.

What's wrong with the Beck song btw? It's great. Seems like some confirmation bias happening ITT.

The song is a let down. Reminds me of when I was hyped for the Panda Bear track on RAM and didn't feel like it used his vocal strengths. Beck track falls flat.

You can call bias all you want, but I'm a huge M83 fan since Dead Cities. Seen him live 5 times, two of those at festivals. Even stan Digital Shades, which is one of his best releases to date. This album is just not up to par.

Such a different direction M83 is taking. I have only listened through the album once, but I have a feeling that it will grow on me. For now, the best songs are Walkway Blues & Laser Gun.

The funk and soul influences on Walkway Blues can't be understated for making that song what it is.

And I'm just going to say it right now, Atlantique Sud and Time Wind are my favorites. Sounds I never thought would be captured on a high-profile album now.

Really disappointed :/

Dead cities and Hurry Up are some of my favorite albums. I know some of the songs will grow on me, but this is not at all what I wanted from m83.

I guess it had to happen eventually, but this is the first proper M83 album I don't enjoy.. like at all. It's not that it sounds bad, but it's just super super boring and doesn't capture my attention or imagination at all. Walkaway Blues is amazing though!

"For The Kids" makes me cry every single time I hear it. The first time I listened to it I didn't get it.
That spoken word part.

I actually this M83 album more than I realized. I wasn't really a fan of Hurry Up We're Dreaming because it went too long for me and lost focus on Disc 2. This feels like Saturdays = Youth's cathartic cousin or something that Air used to do.

Whatever that means. All in all several of these songs were a bit too sweet for my tastes, but not saccharine in a different way than the previous releases.

The only standout track for me is Road Blaster.

Do It, Try It is still legitimately one of the worst songs I've heard in years.

Criticizes modern music as making him want to puke with no originality. Follows up with a shitty 80s synth record.

This is trash.

Same issue I had with the record. He's so jaded and angry about modern music but then releases an album that does nothing innovative or feels original. Junk is a poor mans Talkie Walkie by Air.

And those quotes from the Pitchfork interview leave a bad taste in my mouth. They could have come from any of the artists I enjoy and I would have felt the same way. Boggles my mind that 5 years since HUWD and this is what was made.

I've never felt more like a hipster than with this song.

Why doesn't the world get that it's amazing?

I hated on first listen, but it has grown on me. There are some vocal manipulations in the song that annoy me because they don't seem to add anything to the song other than they sound like sfx, but then there are some manipulations that I love.

Because it's not. It has a saloon piano in it.

There is also this, but it only really stands out at two spots and it is short lived.
