Everyone's favorite little publisher that could announced a new title:

Mastiff Announces Paramount Pictures Top Gun
For Nintendo DS™

2-4 Player Wireless Dogfighting in the Palm of Your Hand

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (June 30, 2005) Video Game publisher Mastiff today announced they will publish Paramount Pictures Top Gun for Nintendo's highly successful new handheld video game system, the Nintendo DS™. An action-packed tribute to the blockbuster movie hit of 1986, Top Gun takes advantage of the unique Nintendo DS interface for high octane mastery of the sky.

"Top Gun's intense action translates perfectly into a videogame," said Bill Swartz, Head Woof at Mastiff. "Top Gun exploits the capabilities of the Nintendo DS to duplicate that experience in a handheld environment."

A hip, heart-pounding combination of action, music and incredible aerial photography helped make Top Gun the blockbuster movie hit of 1986. Top Gun for Nintendo DS takes a look at the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy's prestigious fighter weapons school. Top Gun players enter as rookie pilots, selected along with a handful of other pilots for elite training at the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School. To become the best fighter pilot in the world players must to go head to head with the best of enemy fighter pilots.

Top Gun puts the player in the cockpit of a heavily armed jetfighter plane. The game includes 10 single player missions such as high altitude dogfights, escort missions, and protecting airspace, over a variety of terrain with dramatic weather and visual effects. Top Gun also features head to head play for two, three or four players. High quality sound effects take advantage of the Nintendo DS's ability to deliver virtual surround-sound.

Additional features of Top Gun game include:
" Top Gun Competition Campaign includes elite training and realistic combat
" Choose pilots named for characters in the movie
" Choose different fighter planes, each with different handling characteristics
" 10 diverse missions across arctic, ocean, forest and desert zones
" Weapons include machine gun, fire-and-forget missiles, homing missiles
" Multiplayer dogfight for 2-4 players
" Stunning visual effects include explosions, water splashes, smoke, and gun/rocket trails
" Challenging weather effects include sun, rain, animated clouds, and snow
" Pulse-pounding music reminiscent of the movie soundtrack (sad face -justin)

Yeah, and Gungrave OD was like 10 bucks brand new. I loved that game.

Well, I can personally say that Gungrave Overdose is craziest third person action game I've ever played. It's fast, incredibly hard, fairly long (lmao) and features destuctible cel-shaded environments. Pick it up if you get a chance.

I actually played the game (top gun DS) briefly at E3, but was sworn to secrecy until they made an announcement. It was (very) early, but showed promise.

A fire-and-forget missile like the AMRAAM can be fired after lock-on, then you can disengage the target and the missile will still track the target for the kill.
A regular homer would require you to stay engaged and locked-on to the target until the missile hits.

Mastiff is also handling Space Invaders Revolution for DS. Hopefully it sells well enough for them to pick up Bubble Bobble Revolution and Rainbow Islands Revolution too.

What would you want them to use the second screen for? I mean, radar is a great use of the second screen in a flight-sim. And when I say radar, I mean real radar, not just a map. Imagine being able to toggle between different radar types or guiding missles to target using it (ala the black and white vids you see on CNN showing missles going to target...would be great to control that with the touch screen). Regardless, the radar idea could be implemented really well or really poorly.

I remember the game Back to Baghdad for PC (years ago)...you could attach an optional radar display to your PC and it would output to it. It was really really cool.

Being that this is a Top Gun game, though, I expect something more like Afterburner rather than Falcon or something.

Looks about as good as Ace Combat 1/Air Combat on PSone. Who's making this?
WTF? Did you even watch those vids? It doesn't even come remotely close to Ace Combat. Have you even played Ace Combat?

I always have to resize DS videos to an approximation of 3" as opposed to how large they look on my monitor. The lack of texture filtering really makes sure a monitor image does it no justice. You can tell it's still really early in those videos (none of that movie-remeniscent music they talk about in the PR) and it looks like it might turn out okay... but I think the single player could really get old fast. It looks simple and there's only 10 missions?

It needs single cart multiplayer. Online if possible.

You really need to go back and replay Air Combat before questioning anyone else on it's visuals... *edit* screens here.
