New NieR:Automata trailer

Anyone else think this could be a 90+ metacritic? The demo was outstanding and everything about their trailers feel very interesting and fresh.

Reviewers hated NieR's story. Yoko's plot twists are often very disturbing and his characters rarely end up happy, and that'll be off putting.

I'm expecting 79.

Gameplay is going to be one of the best ever in an ARPG, but the story side of things might let it down. Not expecting much from quests either as they should be the usual fetchathon. I'm expecting around 80. Be happy for anything more.

The original Nier had a bunch of collectathon quests too, but it also had some really great dialogue to go along with it.
The reward for one quest was just listening to a song that doesn't play anywhere else in the game and that was perfectly fine because the dialogue throughout the quest made the whole thing worth the effort.

As for story, I agree but not for the same reasons you probably have.

True, but that was back in 2010. Even then it was a miracle that NieR wasn't completely relegated to obscurity and instead kept a loyal following that respected what it was trying to do.

Nowadays, we're in a climate that's actually more accepting of games like Nier Automata that try to be different in their narratives (we're not totally there yet, but it's closer than it's ever been). More importantly, the gameplay is vastly improved this time around and that makes a challenging narrative much easier to swallow.

Well, we've seen one quest in Automata, and it's the run of the mill fetch quest from the sounds of it. I'd be happy if they can do some good ones, but I'm not expecting much.

▲ Weapon Shop's Request

The Weapon Shop in the Resistance Camp is having a rough time since their maintenance device is broken. If they could gather the necessary parts to fix it from the inner area of the Factory Ruins, it could be fixed, but... Due to an infestation of dangerous Bio-machines in that area, no one can go near it.

Gather the following items in the inner area of the Factory Ruins for the Weapon Shop:
― Complex Robotics: 0/4

If i remember most reviewers also didnt bother to play much more than the first run of Nier to see the other different endings either, which is where the appeal of that game actually is

A2: You have a long way to go 2B worthy.

It'll score 85-88, games don't score 90+ anymore unless they're from 4-5 chosen developers.

Metacritic scores and reviewers' typical behavior seem to have changed lately. Yakuza 0 getting an 84 in this day and age really surprised me. It has a lot of things mainstream critics usually slam games for: it looks like an early PS3 game, its cutscenes go on forever, it has a melee combat system that isn't a rip-off of Arkham or Dark Souls, and its open-world is small and restrictive compared to the GTAs and Watch_Dogs of the world.

Point is, critics can be unpredictable sometimes (except when it comes to their GotY picks), and they might have an epiphany.

79-83 MC.

Reviewers will be slightly more open towards the plot and the importance of multiple endings.
Still i wont expect it to review higher.
But it will gain lots of positive word of mouth.

Honestly I couldn't give a damn if critics love it or hate. Its very existence is a miracle and a validation for those of who were shouting from the rooftops what an amazing experience the original was back in 2010.

People care way too fucking much about critical consensus these days, this game being a classic case where if their "truth" held sway it simply wouldn't exist.

I dont care, but i do want platinum games to catch a break and have one successful title under their belt.
Good reviews help with that.

Their truth did hold sway for a long time, though. Its a big reason why the original game bombed. If the initial reception was more positive, sales might have been better, and we wouldn't have needed to wait seven years for a follow-up.

Critics should not be reflecting what's popular; the whole point of criticism is to champion what's good for the medium under analysis, regardless of how tough a sell that it is to the mass market.

One of the biggest reasons the original had a hard time was that it wasn't graphically in the same league as FFXIII which came out shortly before to much critical fanfare. Nier also took a big hit because the perception was that XIII had been overrated somewhat, and so it got short-shrift, most notably indicated by not a single review at the time making any mention of NG+ and its changes, despite those changes being unmissable literally immediately upon restarting the game.

Question is, will these factors still be in play this time around?

I really do think it could get 90+. The only thing likely to get in the way of that is if there's some really quirky shit that happens in the game cuz Yoko wanna troll

Hmm, maybe it won't get 90+ then lmao

I have far more faith in the story and quests as opposed to the other open world games I've played or have my eye on. At the very least, it will be memorable.

I'm expecting the story to be awesome and depressing and review like garbage. Reviewers don't seem to like Yoko Taro. :(

The story will have a deep love, a great love. A love powerful and formidable. A love that crushes like a mace.

Gettin out sandwhiched by much bigger game? DOA.

Even something like Nioh has more chances because of critical reception as well as Souls reflected light.

Thats why i think a high metacritic score is pretty inportant to at least win over that hardcore crowd.

Holy crap this just looks more and more amazing.

It coming out the week after Switch/Zelda hurts me so much.
And by me, I mean my wallet.

and then friggin KH 1.5 + 2.5 at the end of the month. Why does March hurt me so

You can bet few reviewers are going to cut points for objectification of women so no chances for 90+.

tbf andriods running around in lingerie for no adequetly disclosed reason is pretty ridiculous. Or will I be ashamed of my words and deeds?

Honestly, it's just to look cool.

Yoko Taro is an very progressive video game writer, especially by japanese standards. He's just not beyond cheesecake for its' own sake.

Eh if we want to play the the "realism" game, those androids would either wear protective gear or nothing at all to minimize extra weight.

Crying about the panties is silly.

I really hate those dudes with the small heads.

Huh? Drab, boring environmental design is par for the course for Platinum.
They got much better with Bayo 2 and the Wonderful 101,i wonder what happened with that, though Nier would look off with colorful environments and its a huge game.
