New PGR4 Hands-on + Pics

Every one of these pics look like some awesome painting. They don't look photo-realistic due to flat lighting, but Bizzare should definitely license the engine for some other "non-racing" games...it's like Half-Life 2 on super steroids (environment-wise). Awesome.

CAPARO T1?? SSSSSSSSIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Seriously Che, you guys need to get cracking on the Forza 2 DLC. We need more cars!! Zonda F? Koenigsegg CCX? Veyron? BMW e60 M5? E63 AMG? Murcielago LP640?

JEBUS CHRIST! NO ONE IS SAFE! EVERYONE BACK TO YOUR BUNKERS!!!

Holy hell does this game look fantastic! And I don't have to set the dash to 1024x600 everytime I want to play without wacky artifacts this time. WOOT!

Wow holy crap. This looks awesome. Bizarre are just geniuses!

Its their environments that blow me away. Creeping around the tracks in photomode is extremely impressive. I can't wait to see the snow coming down in Quebec. I could get lost in PGR4 for weeks.

My only wish is that it was more Test Drive Unlimited then circuit based but I had heard they have a different take on things this time so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

FINALLY!!!! FINALLY!!!

While I always loved the PGR series, I really wished that on some courses they go into the outskirts or in the lower levels of the mountains near the cities...by the looks of this pic, they seem to just that!!! This is what I really wanted in the game....this and variable lighting conditions (hear that Che!!!).

WOW...WOW & WOW!!! This game is looking great....The only thing that can take away from this game in my opinion is going to be the DLC for Forza 2. If they can get more tracks/enviroments in the game and incorporate them into the Career mode somehow (added events), then PGR4 is going to have a hard time contending for Racer of the year, which as of now Forza 2 owns!

Yeah, I wonder what your opinion would be if Stinkles showed up in the Killzone thread right after it's big unveiling and made a derogatory comment.

Then you'd see the irony.

I ain't stupid. I see how Bish looks at people. Like he's hungry.

I'm sorry to say I actually happen to agree with Nostromo for the car lighting and I'm the farthest from a 360 troll ;)
While his first post here was totally out of place, I also think that the lighting on the cars is once again somehow off. I certainly can't explain what, but the cars looks slightly out of place on certain screens.
At least it looks like the motion blur now affects the cars as it should, that was my biggest issue with PGR3's graphics.

I said wow. Heavenly Sword - 1 sale.

Can always use that monies for Uncharted. Or a shuvel.

hahaha

ANyway I think it looks good, overall it is consistant, unlike GT HD as of yet

Effects = great

CArs = decent, definitely not up to GT standard, but they obviously not going for realism

cool they have bikes in there

peace

looks like they just used the nurburgring from pgr 3 - :(

sorry about that. next time they'll make sure to let the Germans know to build a new track so they can put the new one in PGR5.

You know what I don't get? Why nobody calls bull shot on a 360 game. This and the Halo single player screen shot? Sure it's "rendered in game", but will it look like that when you play? HELL NO. Jesus people, double standard much?

935830_20070703_screen003.jpg

How exactly will you see this in game? Via replay? Bull. Shot.

Nah, I was just messing with him. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But you gotta admit that if a MS rep showed up and said something similar in a XIII thread.... things wouldn't be too rosy in the nelsonroyale household. I know how you likes the Final Fantasy.

I think the bikes if handled right will go a long way in keeping the series fresh. It also looks like they're backing away from their "supercar only" stance. Hopefully this one won't suffer from being rushed out the door like the last one was and it'll be a return to form. The screens look great.

If you want to see people calling bullshot on the 360, go read the Halo 3 thread. You do know that racing games on all of the consoles, including the console you like, show off their best in replay modes right? And have done so for years.

Also, calm down.

Shouldn't the cars NOT have motion blur, since the camera is following the cars at the same velocity?

Only difference I see is the car color, which mainly has to do with the environmental lighting.
I think that the picture above is photoshoped.
Here is a "real" untouched picture of a Ferrari and even if the difference is not really big there's something you can't deny it.

Plus i think that nostromo didn't noticed the rain effect makes the car shine more than usual so you can clearly see it on the shots.
In game will be different i think it will be more natural to see a car shining like that under the rain.

We've seen better and better already exists in GT:HD. There's little question that Bizarre will refine its shaders before release and there's no reason to doubt their ability either. As of today though, I think Nostromo is correct.

GT:HD is lit very much the same way, actually. How can you say he is right and then bring up another game that uses the same sort of model, and then claim it's better?

I'm still stuck in shock that he's banned. I mean Che use to say negative stuff all the time about PS3 games, but I never thought he'd get banned.

Hell sometimes it was fun arguing with Che.

But Che wasn't saying something outright wrong, was he?

I mean it's one thing to criticize the game, and it's another to be flat out wrong AND trolling at the same time.
It's like going into a MGS4 thread and saying "low poly models FTL". And then refusing to state why they think that.
He got what he deserved. If you need to cry, go to the bathroom.

Anyways, PGR always had damage.

Secondly there is something off about how the cars are lit, but the game may make huge strides like FM2 did in the last few months.

this post is so contradicting and backwards it's not even funny.

GTHD doesn't look anything like this in terms of shaders.

he's not wrong -- the cars look weird, and in his opinion, they look like plastic. you even admit in your post that they are "lit" weird, but that's just you mis-identifying what's weird about it vs him and his professional opinion.

i think i'm done with this thread though. i think it'd be pretty ridiculous if i got banned for anything i've said, but better safe than sorry.

This week and next will bring a whole new meaning to the word "bitching." Jesus christ, I have witnessed the most ridiculous molecular nit-picks about the most un-true/idiotic things over the past couple of days.

Stop your god danm whining and just STFU for once in your life.

Rain effects look nice

The car going at the same speed as the camera shouldn't have motion blur, others going at a different speed should. Cars had no motion blur at all in PGR3 during gameplay as far as I could tell.

Do you even know what he is talking about? He's talking about how the cars are shaded.

Compare this shot with what you see when you play GT:HD. Play with a white Lancer. Compare the way the polys are shaded.

Lit != shading.

He's completely wrong, which is probably half the reason why he was banned.

Sheesh, am I dealing with children here?

dyfb, you've demonstrated in the Gran Turismo 5 thread that you don't know what you are talking about. If you are having trouble grasping these concepts, read a book on realtime graphics. Seriously, it appears that it would do you a world of good.

So pick out a book, read it, and then hit that reply button.

If you're gonna respond, PM me, I'm not going to talk about it in this thread.

blimblim: If you stood still perpendicular to the track, and cars passed you, you would see them blur IIRC. I agree that it was overdone in PGR3, I hope it's toned down.

That, as well as the poor texture filtering as well as the low resolution (rendered at lower than 720p) were the biggest issues I had with the visuals. I'm glad those things have been addressed in PGR4.

forumauto-concours-juillet-jbmmv.jpg

Again i don't want to troll and say that PGR4 doesn't looking good because it doesn't.
But i just want to show that even if the game is gorgeous, some of us could find colours, shaders or lighting (i don't know wiwh one is in cause) a little different from real life (even if a game
of this gen
will never look like real life...
Now i'm out because i don't want that this topic focuses on something like "plastic looking cars" (wich is not)
Maybe we should just enjoy the facts that we have a lot of new things in PGR4 (bikes, weather conditions...) and that it will surely surpass all others racing games.

Photo mode will also be part of PGR4, and you'll be able to share both your pictures and video of your best drives with an online service dubbed PGR On Demand--essentially a YouTube-like feature that will let you share clips and pictures with other PGR fans. Producers said the game will have a Web presence that will tie in to this feature but haven't released details yet on how it will all work together.

That's pretty sweet. That's one thing I asked for, for the next FM2 update...sharable replays. Web presence is a great idea.

Niiice! What track is that? Game is looking fantastic.

What excites me the most is the fact that this will be the first Gotham game released that was developed with support for the force feedback right from scratch. Has Bizarre mentioned anything regarding whether or not the game's FFB effects will be improved upon over the previous game? I wonder if the FFB effects will be on par or greater than in Forza 2.

Lit schmit. Every last gen-racing game was lit pretty much the same way as GT3/GT4, and not a single one was even remotely close to having cars looking photo-real as GT.

But Che wasn't saying something outright wrong, was he?
You'd be surprised.

But I do believe banning is context dependant - people would probably start killing each other if nAo kept posting in the same line of thought.

i feel a bit safer with that groupthink thread up. so let's see how this goes. going to sleep after i post this -- this was a PM i sent (with some edits):

you're right that the one screen you posted looks similar to GTHD shaders in some respects, but it's pretty foolish to ignore the rest of the screenshots. i couldn't find good comparison pics for the others and i need to sleep, but --

observe the car here:
pgr4vs1.jpg

shaders emulate the surfaces and specifically how the surfaces react to light. the pgr4 shot almost comes off more like an off-color solo cup/plate:
SOLPS1CR.jpg

it's not as good as picking up other hues from reflections. that has little to do with lighting and everything to do with the shaders.

GTHDvs1.jpg

GTHDvs2.jpg

GTHD shaders look great and they give the illusion that the cars are actually made of the same materials, due to how they react to light. not perfect by any means and there's definitely room for improvement, but i think it's clear they are close.

couple other good examples:
http://s94618188.onlinehome.us/upload/uploaded/gthdc_17.jpg
http://s94618188.onlinehome.us/upload/uploaded/gthdc_15.jpg

and yes, lighting does change -- but shaders can look better in certain lighting conditions than others. good shaders are going to look great in a variety of lighting conditions. i don't think one screenshots outweighs the rest. if someone wants to find comparison pics for these, be my guest.

cheers

Never ever did warrant a ban. I've critiqued so many racers in my 9+ years here on GAF and I've never been banned for it.

That's because I talk about the issue very clearly, and post examples. Your post is much akin to mine, and not much like the trollish comments from nostramu.

As you mentioned in your PM:

Shaders don't change from shot to shot, the lighting conditions do.

It looks like the ambient lighting is a bit too high in some of these PGR4 shots, whereas in the one I showed you, it looked appropriate.
