new Ridger Racer DS screens (cleaner than others)

1 cart multiplayer? Count me in!

Seriously, this is a must-buy for me. I have a plane trip coming up next month w/ a friend who also has a DS, so I will happily play this instead of Asphalt.

Does anyone have any Asphalt impressions, or did we all get Mario & Feel the Magic?

I've heard alot of praise for Asphalt. But this will be a better racing game no doubt.

Ridge Racer has always offered some of the best racing around. I never played the N64 version though so hopefully I'm not talking out of my ass. :D Let's hope it's as good as the others I've played.

Asphalt isn't that bad; good control, nice sense of speed, and runs at a smooth 60fps. There are some collision issues (why can I drive right THROUGH trees in the middle of the road? Why is it when I hit something I start right back with little speed lost sometimes?), but the game is an overall decent lanuch title. You get arcade, time attack, multi-cart link up, pursuit (you play as the cop, there doesn't seem to be an option for the CPU to chase you), and an evolution mode where you cna enter tournaments and win new cars. There's also traffic on the road, which makes the frame rate even more impressive.

Comparing the game with RR64, I think RRDS will be the better buy, and the 1-cart link up option is a definite plus, but Asphalt isn't that bad. I'd definitely agree more with Gamespot's review than IGN's.

For those that never played RR64, the game takes all the tracks from Ridge Racer 1 and Ridge Racer Revolution, and combines them with original tracks developed by NST. Game play is pure Ridge Racer, and the soundtrack is pretty damn good for a cart game. One of the best things I remember liking about the game is the 4P splitscreen having a solid frame rate and the CPU cars also staying in multiplayer racers, unlike in the PSX versions IIRC.

The problem isn't the technical level of the graphics, but rather that this, just like RR64 before it, doesn't really look much like an RR game. There's just something off about the visual style.

Asphalt, I think, would've been a much more decent game had the developers focused solely on the DS version and had about six more months of real development time.

That looks like Ridge Racer to me, as does the shot w/ the Helicopter, but I can understand the style complaint, for sure.

As far as the technical prowess one, I guess we'll just have to wait and see (though I expect it will be a mediocre looking game...). I can see lots of blocky textures even on Mario 64, but they aren't horribly distracting to me. I dunno... I guess I don't really get bothered by it.

F-Zero X had to sacrifice graphic detail in order to maintain its frame rate. It's easily one of the weakest-looking racers on the N64. The sense of speed totally made up for it, but if you think RRDS looks worse, something's wrong. :P

F-Zero X looked quite good.

i agree. It didn't hurt that there was sparse trackside detail, because the SNES game was the same way. The tracks magically floated in the sky. But what did hurt was games like RR64 and Wipeout 64, that had more detailed backgrounds. FWIW, i feel there was nothing wrong with any of these games graphically, given the technology.

Aoi, I'm not saying that F-Zero X looked like ass, but that RR64 is clearly the better-looking game, and as you said, has more detailed tracks/environments. Even F-Zero GX could have looked better if speed wasn't the main point of the game.

F-Zero X and Ridge Racer DS both looks like ass. But at least F-Zero X was not released in late 2004. X_x

Okay, AGAIN...Ridge Racer DS is a *PORT*. It's not a new game. That doesn't excuse it for looking like it does, but it's not a new title.

And don't worry about F-Zero X. I'm sure we'll see it in 2005. :P

I don't think its 60 frames. I keep looking at the videos and it sorta chugs here and there while for the most part it looks like a 30 frames per second racer. Once thing I miss is the N64 blur setting that was in RR64,cause everything looks muddy in the DS version. Honestly the game looks more like PSX RidgeRacer than the N64 one.

Looks like a decent racing game but judging from videos Asphalt racer looks alot better. From looking at the videos of DS games theres one thing I really like-the handheld has a pretty nice sound chip as it pumps out some pretty nice music.

This ship's sinking fast my friend. I suggest a bail-out.

Nothing brings out the trolls like a Ninty thread on a weekend!

That said. IIRC, RR64 had fantastic music, but to up the sound quality, they made it mono. I imagine they'll be fixing that for the DS release?

Seriously though, once Advance Wars DS is out ill forget all ill will towards it :)
That's bullshit. I don't have any problems making perfectly beautiful writing. Upon first try my friends were able to draw some very nice art.

NST is probably the most technical incompetent developer Nintendo has. 1080 Avalanche, WaveRace BlueStorm, Ridge Racer 64 and now this lack graphical prowess. An let's not forget their buggy N64 emulator.

You're on crack.. those first two games look good and Blue Storm in particular has awesome physics.

GA is on some bullsh*. This game looks exactly like the N64 game which I owned, and can say was a fun game and looked good. Does the game look bad? Yes if you compare it to a PSP or GC game. This is supposed to look like the N64 not the PS2.

IF this was a beauty contest. PSP Ridge is Monica Bolluchi....and the DS version is Rosanne.

Sorry DS owners, but Namco just handed you a plate full of ownage.

I bet Ken & the Namco head are laughing somewhere in Japan....

"So Mr Namco...how does it feel to still get sweet revenge after Yamachui screwed you with NES carts?"

(Strokes Moneyhats)

"It feels good!"

I wish people would have second thoughts before posting RRDS screens or videos. The is the one game that will never be discussed peacefully. :P

You think so?

I don't understand the hate. Sure, this looks shit (might play OK), and the PSP version looks gorgeous.

But you can hardly blame Namco for shitting on people. What do you want? The PSP version on DS? Blame Ninendo for not giving them hardware that can do it.

Honestly, that last shot that was posted (side by side with FZero X) looked OK. Certainly on a par with what I expect from DS at the moment. The steering wheel is still gay, but never mind.

i think by focusing on the hilarity of the top screen, we're doing a disservice to the superior hilarity of the bottom screen. the pretend steering wheel cracks me up every time i see it. and that's before i imagine a pudgy child-man hunched over his ds in rapt concentration, his fat thumbs leaving murky prints as they strain for purchase on the tiny, intangible wheel. and then i imagine his subsequent posts on the gaf. "it's really intuitive once you get used to it." i swear i'm having more fun with the ds than the people who bought it.

Isn't that the same for every screenshot on GAF?
:lol

I think is better than PSP Ridge Racer !

It look more old school and classical ...

... Let's face the truth - Ridge Racer V lack magic of old game !!

:lol:lol:lol damn some forum members came to mind quickly

Bravo folks, you totally crashed this thread. Which makes no sense because we've been here a thousands times with RRDS. Yes, it looks absolutely nothing like the PSP RR--get over it and troll something else that isn't worn out.

I wouldn't be so disapointed it Asphalt didn't look so freakin' good. If a damn CELLPHONE gaming company can make better graphics than you, that's a problem. Asphalt looks amazing on my DS.

It's too bad Asphalt sucked big fat flopping donkey dick.

I really think Ridge Racer DS will be cool. Too much focus on the visuals here, not enough focus on gameplay. I like Ridge Racer gameplay. And although I despised Ridge Racer 64, I think that maybe NST will do something better this time. At least I hope.

Here's lookin' at you, kid.

I'm really looking forward to it, the videos on IGN actually impressed me. As long as the framerate is high and game fun, then I'll get it. Only played RR64 briefly, but really enjoyed it.

One thing that did surprise me about the DS was how much better things look in person. All the videos of Metroid and Mario I downloaded made them look terrible, but when I actually got the DS they looked much better. I'm sure this will be the same.

Junior members should be banned on the spot when they troll like this. Where are all these trolls coming from anyways? I don't remember many troll here last year.

I reckon EA will do a better job than both with NFSU2 :lol

I'd like to see what DS exclusive racing games end up like :)

wouldn't it be funny if this turned out to be a better game than the PSP Ridge Racer?

It's certainly possible considering the best Ridge Racer game of them all looks like this

Then again that RR was actually made by NAMCO.
